i get so mad with people like this, they like to live like animals, i know they have a mind problem but, family has to help! this is something unaceptable!
I'm 20 and I believe the solution to helping a hoarder is to change his/her mindset, Not just remove the stuff; I wasn't far off from Bernie here, Mindset wise; Collecting video games was fun for me, That fun died when my uncle did and after that I didn't know what else I could do until I got interested in building guitars, Now I don't want my collection but I don't think I need rid of it badly so it hasn't gone completely yet, Its probably much more important to sell than I think though.
my parents are both like her and they live next door to my family & every time we start to take anything to good will they go thru all of it & tell me how dumb I am..
but when they die I have one hell of a mess to clean up!
The trick would be to find someone with a failing strip mall and convince them to give her an empty store so that they can try to get some kind of tax break out of the deal for having a charitable store. The other hard part would be getting the disorganized mom to make nice displays and keep the shop clean and keep records. The daughter could help with that.
Someone suggested that the lady sell the stuff. That sounds like a good idea except that nobody really pays anything for anything in this economy. But this lady could run a junk shop. The trick would be to keep the junk shop neat. I could easily imagine this lady cramming the junk shop unsafely with items that won't sell. How about a charity shop? Junk shops seem to have to be huge to make money but a charity shop might get free rent and tax breaks and the dough will help animals or people
People like this need to take it outside their home and run a second hand store or a perpetual garage sale. Then they could do what they love and not have it piled up in their living space. Many of them simply cannot bear to see useful things just thrown out in the trash (many are children of the Great Depression, etc.), but this is frugality run amok. Still, remember two things -- you cannot help people until you can understand them, and this lady is someone's mother, and they love her .

Yah okay hoarding is a mental disorder. But what about the ones that have dead cats buried under all the junk? Dead cats, feces, filthy rotten food. So they hoard rotten things? Or is it more like plain old L-A-Z-Y. Many hoarders are surrounded with filth. Junk is one thing, filth is something entirely different. If you don't clean up filth, if you live in it it's lazyness. I love going curbside picking. But the difference between me and Bernie is that I don't keep many of the things I bring home. I give them away to people who need them, donate or sell them on craigslist.
Hoarding IS a mental disorder. My mum is one. And i have reacted as this son has done...for a very long time. I understand completely his point of view and the frustration and anger for those who live with hoarders or are related to hoarders. But i have started to try and understand more about this subject.....but it is seriously difficult for non-hoarders like ourselves to truly understand it. It is a seriously SAD condition and causes huge loss of love in families.
I guess this only happens in places like America we have access to too many disposable products. If it wasn't in her house it would all be in a landfill. This makes me think about the amount of energy spent manufacturing all these unnecessary things. Some poor kid in china is suffering through a life of slave labor to fill our houses with junk.
My mother-in-law is a hoarder and it has afftected all of her kids too. She lived with us on hard times and I could'nt take it anymore, we paid the rent for 6 months and left ! My husband can't stand stuff sitting around and I'm a little OCD with organizing so it works out, lol
My sister is a hoarder. She has actually "asked" for help, and I don't know how she became like this. My other siblings and I, being from a military family are naturally orderly/clean. My sister has a connection with every piece of junk she has-including lamps and alarm clocks that don't even work. Our family got together and helped her box up stuff to take to GoodWill, but had to postpone a day. We got there and she had everything shoved in closets. I cannot pity her, this is what she wants.
The emotional attachment part can be related to OCD, she might feel like if she gets rid of something she has a memory attached to she will lose the memory. I have a friend who has kept every single thing he has ever associated with his sister because he believes that if he gets rid of any of it, he is saying he doesn't love his sister, and that will cause something terrible to happen to her.
thanks for the comment. It is just unreal what is happening to her, we got back over and did a different approach(a la "Clean Sweep"). We had her look at her stuff and ask-have you used this in a month or not, and put it out for pickup. She did it, but after the pickup-she went out and bought twice as much stuff. I gave her some old pictures she wanted copies of a year ago, and there was boxes, bags, and clothes on top of them.
I hate to use this as my own therapeutic ranting place, but I feel "vested" in his because of time and relationship with my sister. I helped her set her clocks the other day and I saw those little bugs flying around her den area. I now worry food or wrappers for food and the like are getting involved. My family is more involved than ever with her and it just seems to be getting worse, not better...

I also think that hoarders are necessarily social outcasts. If you've watched the shows, many do have normal interactions with other people but usually outside their apartment or house.

Yah okay hoarding is a mental disorder. But what about the ones that have dead cats buried under all the junk? Dead cats, feces, filthy rotten food. So they hoard rotten things? Or is it more like plain old L-A-Z-Y. Many hoarders are surrounded with filth. Junk is one thing, filth is something entirely different. If you don't clean up filth, if you live in it it's lazyness. Hoarding IS a mental disorder. My mum is one. And i have reacted as this son has done...for a very long time. I understand completely his point of view and the frustration and anger for those who live with hoarders or are related to hoarders. But i have started to try and understand more about this subject.....but it is seriously difficult for non-hoarders like ourselves to truly understand it. It is a seriously SAD condition and causes huge loss of love in families.

My mother-in-law is a hoarder and it has afftected all of her kids too. She lived with us on hard times and I could'nt take it anymore, we paid the rent for 6 months and left ! My husband can't stand stuff sitting around and I'm a little OCD with organizing so it works out, lol

My sister is a hoarder. She has actually "asked" for help, and I don't know how she became like this. My other siblings and I, being from a military family are naturally orderly/clean. My sister has a connection with every piece of junk she has-including lamps and alarm clocks that don't even work. Our family got together and helped her box up stuff to take to GoodWill, but had to postpone a day. We got there and she had everything shoved in closets. I cannot pity her, this is what she wants.

The emotional attachment part can be related to OCD, she might feel like if she gets rid of something she has a memory attached to she will lose the memory. I have a friend who has kept every single thing he has ever associated with his sister because he believes that if he gets rid of any of it, he is saying he doesn't love his sister, and that will cause something terrible to happen to her.

thanks for the comment. It is just unreal what is happening to her, we got back over and did a different approach(a la "Clean Sweep"). We had her look at her stuff and ask-have you used this in a month or not, and put it out for pickup. She did it, but after the pickup-she went out and bought twice as much stuff. I gave her some old pictures she wanted copies of a year ago, and there was boxes, bags, and clothes on top of them.

I helped her set her clocks the other day and I saw those little bugs flying around her den area. I now worry food or wrappers for food and the like are getting involved. My family is more involved than ever with her and it just seems to be getting worse, not better...

My mother is a hoarder and it's tough on the whole family, she's literally been driving us insane for our entire lives. What shocks me the most about this video is how she and Scott's mother have THE EXACT SAME MANNERISMS AND SPEECH PATTERNS. Forgive the capslock but this is too freaky to be a coincidence. And yes, we are all overweight because she taught us to hoard food and treat ourselves like garbage.

ugg, food hoarding. My boyfriend's mom does that, her house has three fridges and a chest freezer that barely close and one entire room in the house is devoted to canned and non-perishable food. She won't throw any of it out, even if it's rotten or spoiled.

@Kg277 I'm not saying ALL hoarders are fat--just many who are on the Hoarder's TV shows seem to be. I have my fair share of "stuff" I hang on to as well but I haven't let it overtake my home. I also think that hoarders are necessarily social outcasts. If you've watched the shows, many do have normal interactions with other people but usually outside their apartment or house.

What I don't understand is why she picks up broken items she cannot fix herself and has
nowhere to store them to be sold later (even if she did get them repaired). She needs to go through the stuff she has at home & try to sell the items she supposedly was going to sell before. She might actually have some living space in her house if she did that.
