I'm the son of a Presbyterian minister. I don't have any strong viewpoint about the existance of God, probably due to not really believing that if a God did exist there would be a 'burning' Hell. My approach to Philosophy is not so much deciding on one type of thought over the other, but just keeping as much of it as i can in my mind.
I would love to see a discussion about "Philosophers vs the Physicists".
Like for example how physicists have theories on relationships between Time, and space, relativity and all that. Yet ive heard a philosophical view (not sure where i heard it) that time doesn’t "exist" so it cant change.
i.e. Time doesn’t change, its just stuff that changes and we use time as a relative measure of how different stuff changes relative to each other.
SamTheMan's Philosophy: Things can be judged by their intrinsic value. So for example, If religion makes people accountable to a higher being (or secular idea) then this theology is, by the notion of positivity, valuable and ought to be supported regardless of it's mythological implications such as an invisible, omnipotent, man in the sky. This notion, while easily rejected empirically, has intrinsic worth in it's ethical value. So it only matters if the god idea has a positive effect.
@shodanxx Well The individual appears for all intents and purposes...to be the highest authority. Not so much Utilitarianism but rather positivism. I'm not concerned with what "God" isn't what "God" is. It's hard to really go anywhere in a debate with a secular humanists as a metaphysicist. Theologians are by default metaphysicists. They are searching for "God's" essence. Many say though that it is a mistake to search for God's essence because you will be sorely disappointed.
GiveCourage's philosophy in a nutshell: Practically everything can be questioned and be uncertain in philosophy, though it is still worthwhile to look at reason and logic from many viewpoints. The short of the long of it is, don't forget to be HAPPY and enjoy life, partly because this very well could be all we have :D Cheers!
I don't know a lot about Nietzsche, but from what I know: I think his ideas of living life are good, as in make your own values, however I despise the nihilism factor. And the making your own values thing seems all well and good until you come across weirdos who want to go around raping, killing, and just generally acting the bollocks.
take credit for my conclusions. But like most idiots my philosophy express an idea that centres around my 'supposed' self' so.........not wishing to be accussed of having it suggested that I did not atleast try to extend something that may be beneficial to 'the other' there is this. ' Try not to step in S--T. But seriously I love your work. Briliant and entertaining. signed: AN IDIOT
Bravo. Love this stuff. I think I've been invited to render something personal. I resist to the idea that anyone call Me an idiot. You sir have not, and I am pleased. I assert this resistance based on my basic philosophy of "Don't bother me , and do F--k off please." After exploring Aristotle, Plato, Jesus, Buddha, Decarte, Hume etc etc I did arrive at my above mentioned. As an idiot I am afraid this is all I have come up with for now. I'm also sure none of the names I've listed would wish to
@TheUnwisePhilosopher I am. There may be more than you think. Try "Analytical Thomism" in Wikipedia. Modern Aristotelians think very similarly. You've probably heard of Alasdair MacIntyre before and maybe even Elizabeth Anscombe. You may also be familiar with Michael Dummett, who I would hesitantly include. There is also the much more numerous group of "Scholastic" Thomists but they're not as good.
Yeah Kierkegaard! One of my favorite philosophers. I actually suggested Nietzsche a while back only 'cause I thought it would be funny with nihilistic philosophy and such.
HI I'M A STUPID PHILOSOPHER. I THINK THAT GIVEN THE EXISTENCE OF FINITE THINGS COMPOSED OF ESSENCE AND EXISTENCE THERE MUST BE A BEING WHOSE ESSENCE AND EXISTENCE ARE ONE AND FROM WHICH ALL OTHER BEING DERIVES ITS EXISTENCE.
I do rather miss your 3 Minute Philosophy videos. I'm quite excited about the new ones. Do you plan on doing one on Habermas and/or Derrida? It would be keen to see some modern philosophers.
I have this ridiculously idealistic philosophy that as human beings we must ever strive to be rational and disciplined, transcend the animal and the material.
I like philosophy, but I think that it is irrelevant. My philosophy is that most people who like philosophy are really just trying to convince themselves that they are smart. I'll read Rand for fun but I would never recommend getting a BA in Philosophy to most people
My philosophy is that people like Jimmy Voltaire are idiots believing they are entitled for someone to produce a video for them for free when they have done nothing to deserve it.
Another philosophy of mine is that I think that there is purpose in everything that happens. I see small and large events work towards something bigger that always helps me grow better as a person despite how much suffering it brings.
Nietzsche's work makes me feel flat and deflated after reading it. I've always thought it was stupid that Nietzsche had a crappy life and ended up going crazy, yet this is the guy that advocates 'overcoming' hardship.
Love your three minute videos mate, keep them up. Really informative and they make me aware of philosophers I've never even heard of before.
Considering the lack of coverage in mainstream philosophy curriculum, I think Henry Sidgwick as he represented rational egoism or Ayn Rand as she represented objectivism would be an excellent topic for a 3 minute philosophy video.
I've always love Diogenes. I wish I had the balls to live like that. Also, Anaximenes. Essentially coming up with the concept of infinity without understanding the weight of that is pretty awesome.
@aceshigh7 if you listen good you hear him say friedrich. i dont know if you're american or not (I'm not) but i think every language says the name differently. I hear him say 'fredrich'.
Wow! Forgot I was still subscribed to CollegeBinary. The first video "Jimmy Voltaire: Internet Atheist" inspired me to nab the youtube name GODH8R63 which is Jimmy's youtube name in the video. Haven't done anything with it though. It's a bit of a troll name.
Karl Marx is the greatest modern phiolospher, even better than Nietzsche

@SamtheMan0728
so basically utilitarianism ?
so who is the judge of what has value ? the individual ? the rulers ? the masses ?
or are you suggesting there is an absolute objective judge of value that everyone can only agree on ?

My philosophy is this:
Life is a shit chute and, for some unknown reason, your seat is right at the end of the chute.
So my advice is this:
Buy a ticket and enjoy the fucking ride.

he starts great new ways of looking/thinking
and especially opens the window on our way of questioning things
but there is way to much focus on the destructive side of “saying the whole system” is wrong.
People who stop there are not getting him.
I appreciate him more on the fact he wakes us from the lie that we will a solid insurance to life and it’s questions.

Embracing the untamable side of life as Nietzsche explains with the slave-master-moral is more “the Nietzsche I like”
To say short: I like Nietzsche, but not ONLY as the stereotype of “the philosopher with the hammer”
Saying all this I have to mention I do actually like Nietzsche
*never was good at picking “one favorite philosopher“
