There is no reason to believe that there is a higher being at all- for one, there is no evidence (and it's been several thousands years since many religions were founded). It seems you mistake atheism for the "belief that there is not god". Wrong. Atheism is "a disbelief in any form of higher being/deity".

As an atheist, I would be glad if there were a decline in the Christian religion. I would rather my children be indoctrinized into an agnostic system than a Christian, Muslim, or Jewish system. I am very glad that prayer has been taken out of school...what a waste of time for many of us! Would be better to have a moment of silence, to reflect or self-reflect and also to learn this skill in an ever increasingly busy day. Also religion when applied to subjects such as science is stupidifying.

i noticed this stuff in 9th grade. i kept asking my algebra teacher why we needed to learn this stuff and she gave me a list of jobs (albeit a horridly small list) that required [insert alg 2 lesson here]. i thought to myself "i guarantee no one in this room will pursue those jobs". and if such a small number of jobs required a given lesson or principle then why are we learning it now? wouldn't it be more logical for someone who is actually pursuing X job to learn [insert lesson here]?

Most of what Colin Gunn says rings true, but I must point out that many of the founding fathers were not Christians. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had some extremely critical things to say about religion. George Washington refused to take Holy Communion. The only major founding father to be a devout Christian, as I far as I can tell, was John Jay, who wanted anti-Catholic laws to be passed.

Children are being irrepairably damaged by the public school system and parents haven't a clue. I see all the time supposed adults only wanting to have fun and bury their head in the sand. Truth is too hard for them to cope with and they turn to drugs legal or otherwise. We need to educate our children not just in the 3 Rs but also in character building, industrious pursuits and forward thinking. I brought in Jesse Ventura's recent book as well as The Lies My Teacher Told Me for the last semester. Eyes were opened.
