the greatest guitarist EVER bar none! more imaginative than mclaughlin, howe, beck, hendrix, malmsteen, vai, holdsworth, fripp etc, etc. jimmy page has that mystical quality that sets him apart - cant think of anyone who comes close or even similar ??
I was at this gig and it was truly outstanding!! The energy that came from them was immense. I never really cared much for Michael Lee's drumming on the Zep tracks. I found it quite "bullish" in comparison to Bonzo's sensitivity, groove and general funkyness. However, after hearing this again he did an outstanding job really when you consider the weight of a legend that he was carrying. The important thing is that it was a fucking awesome show, Jimmy was on fire!!!!!!
what a way to go...an epileptic seizure...i had plenty of my own when i was way young. this guy was just getting warmed up and started even though he accomplished a great deal so early on. RIP.
Love Page & Plant but JPJ DID NOT decline. They didn't ask. And they owe him HUGE. John Paul Jones IS Zep...Plant can't hold a candle to JPJs musical creativity and JPJ carried Jimmy from Physical Graffitti on. This was awesome but the JPJ snub totally wrong.
@FrankieFlop I love JPJ but it's ridiculous to suggest that he "carried" Page from Physical Graffiti on. Fuck, he quit the band before recording sessions for Graffiti even started...not many people know that, and of course he came back, but things like Kashmir were demoed with just Jimmy and Bonzo. And yeah, his work on that album is awesome - Jimmy always talks about how much he loves the intro to In The LIght. But he also makes the point - politely - how little help he got on Presence.
@mielazul I know...probably should have prefaced that to In Through The Out Door. I play bass and am obviously heavily influenced by JPJ. Never heard that JPJ quit (and kind of doubt it...not sure of your source but if true I'd venture to guess he was getting dissed by Percy!). Bottom line...dude was balls to the wall creativity and never got the recognition...and my point was the snub on this tour was BS. JPJ and Bonzo were inseparable in the groove section. JPJ don't get the credit due.
@FrankieFlop I figured you were a bass player - I'm a guitarist. Funny how these things color your views, right?
But then, our views aren't really that different after all. JPJ is a giant, just like the other 3. Hell, I even thought that stuff with Diamonda Gala (sp?) was cool. But you should look up "Jone Paul Jones quit Led Zeppelin" or something like that. Only Grant and Jimmy knew...and they changed his mind...but basically he was exhausted after the insane 73 US tour.
@mielazul actually , I offered to join the band , on bass , and so jones felt he should step aside and defer to my massive skills . But , I felt bad for the lad , and decided it would be best just to step back and let old Jonesy keep his gig . I am cool that way
@FrankieFlop But I totally wish JPJ was with them on these shows. Believe me I'm a big fan - I saw him right in front of the stage during the Zooma tour, and he was incredible. So, no offense intended.

I loved Zeppeling more than life itself in the 70's. Robert brings a lot of the same stage presence and energy here, but, let's face it: the voice sucks. He simply couldn't sing it anymore after about 1976. He can sing, yes, he can sing mamby pamby shit, but he can't bring balls to the wall Zeppelin.
@therealCanablisS I know my own opinion. I know what I like and what I don't. It has nothing to do with ignorance or intelligence. Extraordinary that a person would be so insulted and offended by my opinion of the voice of a singer. You could stand for some anger therapy or medication.
If you don't like the stuff Plant is doing with Alison Krauss then you obviously have no musical taste. Not that the Grammys always awards the best albums, but this one won 5. It's quality shit. Definitely a BLESSING that they're working together, far from a shame.
@rodentcafeteria no, you're an idiot. he played a higher key intentionally, if you've ever watched a live show you'd realize it's just his style during live performances to keep it interesting.
@rodentcafeteria Pagey wasn't playing the wrong key; studio had two guitar tracks for that part, and he (for whatever reason) chose to play the 2nd track at the moment. Well, at least as far as I can tell.
The blues songs that Zeppelin "borrowed" from were sang and done by numerous people even before the person who zepp copied from did them. Zeppelin took them and twisted it their own little way and made magic. Everyone's style is taken from their influences and shaped into their own way, so wouldn't that make everyone frauds?
Just to thank you for for posting this concert footage. Have got the audio CD but first time I've seen the footage. A truely great gig. Been a fan since seeing Led Zep for the first time of four in 1971. Nobody comes close. Many thanks again.

nah your watching the video and that is so funny - you goose - thats why this is so funny - you have fallen into the trap - you have kept me amused during this whole episode you poor sod - hope you have enjoyed the afternoon watching a bad version of the Wanton song - hahahahahahahahah
Are you using your ears? This passed the listening test of hundreds of thousands of people in the year 1998. This was one of the top ten grossing concert tours of that year. They had plenty of exposure in the three years prior, so the enthusiasm of the fans can't be put down to nostalgia. This was a good band, nothing less nothing more. Also, best version of Heartbreaker since 1972. If you can prove me wrong, post a link.
Rokarolla I have no idea what you are talking about - I love teh Zeps and I saw Page and Plant live in 95 and they were great - what have I said that offended you?
wow, lets take a guess. your into the new rock huh. you mean the ultimate load of bland crap. your such a fag. page ain't half bad but hey i bet your better. Are you concidered one of the greatest rock guitarist of all time? Didn't think so. your just a little punk bitch. So until next time FUCK OFF.
so yeah you still a jack ass and i guess there is no dicussing it. really though to discredit jimmy page like that is kinda out there. he has certainly done plenty for hard rock music and if its not your taste then why are you watching the video. if you don't like it so what, there are plenty more who do. so once again fuck off.
lol, so true, i love zepp, but if you search the band spirit, page actually asked the band if he could throw 1 of their riffs into a zepp song.........the begining riff of stairway
The whole deal behind Zeppelin was that a bunch of talented musicians, "students of music" and friends with a like minded purpose wanted to take the songs that they loved as kids from Howlin Wolf, Willie Dixon, Leadbelly and re-work them. They wanted to energize it and pump it with attitude and pay homage to their idols. Plant still has that same attitude today as he wins grammys with Allison Krauss with a CD full of re-worked classics that time has forgotten. They are masters.
No...I mean I find your view interesting. I rarely hear this. I mean Zeppelin's legacy and influence had been established long before we were both born. With over 400 million albums being sold and eager fans just chomping at the bit to see them re-unite even 29 years after their breakup, speaks volumes. Going after a band's rep, 41 years after they "were born" , seems like trying to argue about the relevance of the california redwood. It's too late. The horse left the barn years ago.
the whole deal with TruthAxe is that he/she is a uninformed, overgeneralizing ass. I CHALLENGE you to listen to and then cite which lesser known works Page "stole" and passed off as his own. If you'd spend the time to actually listen to the actual original recordings that Page supposedly "stole" e.g. "Dazed and Confused" etc. you'll find that Zeppelin's versions bear little resemblence to the originals that he allegedly plagarized.
You still have not cited which works Page allegedly stole. I will reiterate, since you keep regurgitating the same tired assertion--tell us which songs are obviously plagiarized { not lyrical content--we all know about "Whole Lotta Love" }.
true, in a way. but most popular music is. still. i don't think he is the greatest or anything like that. but good, that he is, he did copy plenty of songs from whole lotta love to gallows pole, i can't quit you and plenty others. although the arangment and overall sound was typically different. i know that he has copied plenty. but overall the guy is pretty damn good. you might just have something up your ass.
it has to be twice as fast as the record, sounds like they did a bunch of blow before they went on. don't get me wrong it kicks ass but it loses alot of the style of the orig in my opinion. the black crowes / page version is cooler i think. but if robert and jimmy are there and they like it, they probably wouldn't care what i think :)

Putting aside the dull intro.
The Wanton Song is the perfect song for that hack Jimmy Page to play.
Simple chords, few changes, faux fingering riffs and one note bending solo.
Plant acts like a homo up there on stage.
Bring on Home sounds like noise.
What a dated riff and sound in Heartbreaker and that solo sucks.
Can you imagine being under the age of 30 and liking these washed up has-beens who haven't been since 1979?

so yeah you still a jack ass and i guess there is no dicussing it. really though to discredit jimmy page like that is kinda out there. he has certainly done plenty for hard rock music and if its not your taste then why are you watching the video. if you don't like it so what, there are plenty more who do. so once again fuck off.

Yes, Jimmy Plagiarist. What a talent.
Every big-deal song in the Zep catalog ends up being some song Page stole along with lyrics Plant Le Pen stole.
TruthAxe 2 years ago
lol, so true, i love zepp, but if you search the band spirit, page actually asked the band if he could throw 1 of their riffs into a zepp song.........the begining riff of stairway

The whole deal behind Zep had Page stealing lesser known works of others and passing them off as his own.
Plant holds back Alison Krauss in a bland, dismal recording that includes a rework of Send the Letter from Plant/Page's Walking into Clarksdale.
Grammy = industry insiders patting each other on the back.

So why do you care ?
fishboy91 2 years ago
You ought to ask yourself for an answer to that one.
I made a comment awhile ago about this vid after coming to check out The Wanton Song.
Since then, others, all of whom care, have insisted on engaging me regarding their idol worship of has-beens Plant and Page.

Better to be a "has been" than a "never was." Wouldn't you agree?

Better to be authentic than a fraud.
Fame is fleeting. In the end, a man must awaken to live with himself daily.

Fleeting??? It's been 40 years, man!!! And they're still kicking and I'm sure living quite well on a daily basis.

the whole deal with TruthAxe is that he/she is a uninformed, overgeneralizing ass. I CHALLENGE you to listen to and then cite which lesser known works Page "stole" and passed off as his own. If you'd spend the time to actually listen to the actual original recordings that Page supposedly "stole" e.g. "Dazed and Confused" etc. you'll find that Zeppelin's versions bear little resemblence to the originals that he allegedly plagarized.
guderian2000 2 years ago
OK apologist.
Ripping off from others, in essence stealing money from them is cool with you.
We get it.
TruthAxe 2 years ago
You still have not cited which works Page allegedly stole. I will reiterate, since you keep regurgitating the same tired assertion--tell us which songs are obviously plagiarized { not lyrical content--we all know about "Whole Lotta Love" }.
guderian2000 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Google on Jimmy Page plagiarism and Led Zeppelin plagiarism.
Led Zeppelin were the most famous cover band in history.
What hacks.
TruthAxe 2 years ago
true, in a way. but most popular music is. still. i don't think he is the greatest or anything like that. but good, that he is, he did copy plenty of songs from whole lotta love to gallows pole, i can't quit you and plenty others. although the arangment and overall sound was typically different. i know that he has copied plenty. but overall the guy is pretty damn good. you might just have something up your ass.
awesomeled 2 years ago
The lyrics to Gallows Pole are lifted from a Medieval English folk song/poem dated to the 1500s.
The Wanton Song could have been good with a better arrangement.
Click on it to the right for my commentary.

Doesn't sound rushed to me. RIP Michael Lee.

it has to be twice as fast as the record, sounds like they did a bunch of blow before they went on. don't get me wrong it kicks ass but it loses alot of the style of the orig in my opinion. the black crowes / page version is cooler i think. but if robert and jimmy are there and they like it, they probably wouldn't care what i think :)
