The Toyota Prius uses nickel for the batteries that is mined in Canada, partially refined in Europe, refined again in China then finally shipped to Japan where its put into the cars, then the cars are shipped back to Europe. In terms of environmental impact (during the construction and lifespan of the vehicle) a Prius does more impact than a Landrover Discovery.

@dss8345 This isn't completely true. Although initially it may seem that the Prius has more environmental impact because of its construction, it redeems itself by being recyclable. The Landrover Discovery is also recyclable just for the record. The battery in the prius is worth its weight in Nickel and only an idiot would put it in landfill. The Nickel has to be mined anyway for other purposes so Nickel mining and refinement is inevitable. I have a Discovery by the way, a 2001. I love it! :)

Road traffic is responsible for less than 10% of human greenhouse gas emissions and high performance cars are so incredibly few in numbers are driven so rarely that it doesn't make any difference.

The only reason the motorcar is singled out as evil by environmentalist is because they see it as a symbol of the rich.

We shouldn't waste our money on pointless battery powered vehicles when we could instead spend it on renewable energy technology or combating deforestation.

@Molo9000 It's not so much the greenhouse gas problem with ICE cars, it's their inefficiency. They use a lot of petroleum in relation to the job they do. If you want to keep your ICE car and not see electric cars tomorrow, then find a way to make the ICE more efficient. Oil won't last forever especially at the rate we are using it. I love my V8 kit car and I am constantly trying to make it more efficient without losing it's power but it is very limited to what can be done.

You can have both. There is nothing wrong with a handful of super cars, there is a big problem though with coal-fire power plants, millions of purposely inefficient commuters, and deforestation. And these elite vehicles don't have to run on petrol/gas. If you watch the Koenigsegg segment, it gets more HP on bio-fuels than petroleum.
