Great music, just as interesting as the video, good work, top marks, well done, bravo, chin chin, hurrah and huzzah, three cheers, hip hip horay, congratulations, jubilation, pat self on back, you must be proud, smug smile, anyone who doesn't like the music is a frightful bore and a dirty rotter.
It's videos like this that should be shown to people who think being a soldier is about being the brave man or woman in the crisp uniform. It's an honour to serve your country, but it isn't always about crisp uniforms, marching, and becoming a hero. Real heroes aren't always beautiful and 6 foot 4. Sometimes, they're missing body parts, and have damages beyond belief. These men are what being brave means: Sacrificing EVERYTHING, not only your rights.
It's amazing what they were doing back then before even plastic was invented. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the French who did the first human face transplant in 2005, on the woman whose face was eaten by a dog? Pioneering stuff indeed.
I'm interested that the patients were wearing uniforms. Were they still serving soldiers with those injuries? I could well believe it, tough people in those days.
this is an amazing historical document. I do not remember seeing this in the Val de Grace Service de Santé Museum in Paris when I visited. It should definitely be incorporated into the display of "les gueules cassées".
I loved seeing this footage. Artists are always undermined as parasites, bludgers, dreamers or tossers & then when war breaks out, their on the front line sketching, taking film or photographs and generally interpreting and documenting the loss of mind and reason... becoming the surrogate conscience for populations that have sacrificed it all for blood and spoils, the painters and sculptors who helped in the prosthetic theatres were gifted, talented and wonderful people. Those poor men. Tragic.
It's remarkable work they were doing for these soldiers. They were able to make them look nearly normal. Even if the prostheses don't look quite right, or even a little creepy, the other choice was to try to live a normal life with half a face...if it were me, I'd take the prosthesis.
@ fidellah23 Thats nonsens! The French weren't more violent than any other nation involved in that war. There were cases of extrreme brutality, thats true. But it happened on both sides, like in any other war.
My mother said she remembered British veterans on the streets of British Colombia in the 1930s. There was a man with his jaw blown off. Some men went around with aluminum or cloth masks. There were men still suffering the after-effects of being gassed.
@GADLARACH5 I doubt you have heard alot of Americans say that...in World War One which the casulties of this movie are from... the French soldiers had a reputation of being very violent and brutal adversary to the Germans.I believe it was the French soldiers which would cut off the Germans noses and ears if they found a German soldier with a seraded bayonet.
A sad thing. The terrible War. Thanks for uploading. What a brillant doctor or designer, an early kind of plastic chirurgy. Why the terrible industrial music? To shock the watcher? It is a very sad thing, so sad music would be the best.
@KnutHenningKunze Music like this is brand new and shocking to the ear, but I feel these visuals compliment it perfectly. The chopped, studdering breakbeats emphasize the pain and feeling of being incomplete that these brave men must have felt.
There is poignant sadness and melancholy in the opera music samples Igorr uses. Together, they tell a compelling story of pain and redemption.
Brilliant music, neoclassic & industrial, breakcore, break beat... or whatever it is, this is amazing... and the clip kinda fits the music so well... must have this album...
@niclamerix you do know that this is real footage, taken of real victims of trench warfare, right? these are real artists, making real facial prosthetics for people who had become outcasts after fighting for their country? this is real...sorry if i took your comment too seriously. maybe i misread your intent...
man of these men wore their tin masks long after the paint had faded. i read that many were even buried in them when they passed away. it's as if the mask became part of their identity.
