My dad and I saw The Musical Box play The Lamb the other day at Tribeca PAC in Manhattan and what a show it was. Was my 3rd time seeing TMB, and what a godsend they are for someone like me who was not around when Genesis was in their prime (I'm 22). My dad, lucky bastard that he is, saw Genesis on this tour back in 75. God, why did I have to be born in '89? WHY!!??
The oddity of early 70s Genesis continued with Peter Gabriel and his solo stuff, not with Genesis. i remember the first time i saw the "Sledgehammer" video. i knew this guy was not on any usual wavelength. then i found out that he was the original frontman for Genesis, not Phil Collins, then i discover THIS?! Thia is all Peter Gabriel.
It must have took a lot for Mike Rutherford to keep playing while Peter prances about,at least Steve was sitting down, easier not to crack up laughing !!
@MsMikefox Really? So pretty sure they'll be doing it in NYC as well. Sad that this will the closest we'll ever get to experience the staging of, in my opinion, the best concept album / concert.... Yes, I said it! Sorry The Wall.
@vivelavidarocka "The Wall" is overated in my opinion. It is a great concept album, but I prefer Floyd's earlier albums, from like, "Meddle" up until "Animals"
"The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is just an incredible album. It would have been awesome if they'd have recorded this from beginning to end.
@twtomwood123 Yes, the wall is overrated, but the underlying message is dark as fuck, and if you listen to all the songs, not just a select few, it's brilliant...but my all time favorite album by them is Animals, Dogs is just absolutely superb!
@twtomwood123 The wall is overrated but when you get the concept of it it's a really great concept album, but It doesn't compare to the stuff done with Syd. and also the live show for The Lamb definitely surpasses the Wall.
vu le concert à Besançon en 1975:quelle performance de Gabriel !!!si j'ai bonne mémoire tous ses attributs explosaient à la fin du morceau; grotesque? surement pas, moderne oui
I was also at the Kansas City show at Memorial Hall on February 1st 1975. It is one of the best shows I have ever attended and I've seen a few. I was on the first row and at one point Peter Gabriel rose up through the floor of the stage just a few feet in front of me and my friends. It might have been during "Cuckoo Cocoon". I'll never forget that show!
@benlorenc Unfortunately, no Lamb concert was ever filmed in its entirety, so any release of the Lamb would be incomplete. No one knew of the album when they performed it and it was a bit of a sleeper hit, because not many liked it back then, but it's one of their most critically-acclaimed albums now. Pity they never knew. If I had a time machine, I'd go back in time to film this..and enjoy it with all my heart.
@MitchyGDLP Yeah, but at least Gabriels' costumes mean something! I mean, he IS Rael turned Slipperman in that costume. Gaga's costumes are all about publicity, because her music doesn't speak enough for itself...
i sang this song at karaoke. the audience was really freaked out, they were fascinated but confused. even i wasn't sure what the song was about. the next next singer tried to sing "i will survive." but then she said "oh, what's the use," and walked off. great song, pete! the wart costume was scary.
I wonder if Mike Rutherford is just laughing his ass off at 5:35. It looked like Peter was trying to make a move on him or something in that slipperman costume lol.
This is the end of the better and more prolific era of the Band, Gabriel era are amazing, simply. The only two discs after that remember the best of Genesis are
A trick of the tail, and Wind & Wuthering, the rest are the rest, with one or other song that can deserve be remembered. The Genesis Pos-Gabriel year after year become a commercial band, far away from their Progressive roots.
I agree with you 100% but I will say I have recently taken a liking to the Duke album. The album in its entirety isn't near the level of the Gabriel era albums but there are some really cool moments on there that reflect their early days. Duke Travels is a really cool song that hits all the musical atmospheres like the early albums. I hate Collins era Genesis but I put that song on my Genesis playlist cuz its so good. But after that album, their music just doesn't do it for me.
@MASTERGIBA , oh, I totally agree with everything you are saying, they became some kinda POP band, a few good songs, for some reason, I always liked abacab. But I just will NEVER accept P.C. as the lead singer of genesis, it should be named GENESIS TAKE 2 or some bullshit like that.
Finally they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. FUSE Channel on March 15th 2010 LIVE from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC- DON'T MISS IT -- GENESIS LIVES FOREVER !!
Phil Collins called The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Tour his "marijuana stoner" phase as he would play a majority of these shows high as a kite. He also considers The Lamb his favorite Genesis album. Peter was dressed as the testicle looking slippermen character. This was in the days pre-headset microphones so his vocals wouldn't come out every now and again. Phil Collins said the Slippermen outfit and The Lamia sections were inspiration for Spinal Tap on The Lamb DVD on the 1970-75 box set.
The album is "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" Possibly the best album ever recorded. It see Gabriel and the rest of the band at their height of creativity. I am soooo jealous of Elspode, if only we could wind back the clock & watch this again. There was talk of making it into a movie, but we are reduced to hunting for crappy 8mm blurred shot from the back of the hall. If only we had more good quality footage like some of this.
Indeed, "A Trick of the Tail" is a helluvan album. Saw this tour in England (Hammersmith Odeon). Now, people praise this because it's unique: the complexity of all Genesis music. Genesis is pioneer in theatrical concerts....
Yeah, though Genesis did this four years before the Wall. It's still groundbreaking, but the Wall was a perfect example of just how amazing a concert performance could get.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why do people praise this shit???well its not shit but its only ok. But i think genesis's next album a trick of the tail deserves more respect then this pile of okness.
I was the designated driver that night, everyone else except my girlfriend were on acid. The show blew me away! I can only imagine what it was like altered. Peter Gabriel was the only one with balls enough to do stunts like this in front of thousands. Nothing since has been near as creative, or obscure.
At 3:38 I need the release that comes from the studio vocals. The costumes and movement keep him from belting out that chorus and it hurts the impact.
I *saw* this tour in Kansas City at Memorial Hall, Kansas City, Kansas in '75. I was in the fifth row from the front of the stage, right in front of Hackett. I could hear the air hissing as the Slipperman suit filled up. There was *no* screwing up of the voice feed from Gabriel during this or the Lamia. It is *still* the best concert I've ever seen, and probably always will be.
Peter on The Lamb DVD which comes with the 1970-1975 box set explained that his voice was always sub par when singing in the cone thing on The Lamia and on Slippermen. Also The Lamb concerts in 1974/75 were in days before the radio mikes (the headset mikes) that everyone uses now were invented. Phil Collins called TLLDOB era as his marijuana phase. Also said some shows were one of reasons for Spinal Tap. This is the same version as on Archives 1967-1975 sans overdubs.
@rafalweb lol yes it does, that's the idea though ;), he was dressed as a slipperman who were described in this song as having tumors all over their bodies
Sick costume...the one that apparantly did it for Peter. He says that part of the reason he left was because the whole costume thing was becoming a bit conservative. When i think about that, he makes a lot of sense. Costumes were now expected of him and what costume could he come up with that would have more of a shock value to the crowd after they've seen this one? While i would have loved for him to stay, i think he left at the right time. Though now would be a good time for aLamb reunion tour
this is the shrine gig a fantastic gig that was put on the 1st archieve box set that has gabriel and hackett redoing their stuff great vid for those who luv the slipperman genesis are the best ;-)
It's pretty much a shocking disgrace that Genesis never had this tour filmed professionally,or if they did , I've never seen it !
