I think North and South was and still is a WONDERFUL mini-series. John Jakes is still writing better than ever. Now as for the comment on Americans... I'm American. I live in South Carolina and on the coast near Charleston. There is a lot of history in the world and you must look at all sides to the story. Not all Slave Owners were SIMON LEGARE. Uncle Tom's Cabin is a pure work of Fiction. I'm sure there were some slaves that were beaten and cruelly so, but it was the past. Let it go.

@LordDracsWife - In what capacity would you be willing to be a slave and in what manner would you authorize someone to enslave you? For some things there aren't two sides to a story. Some things are just wrong. No other discussion around it. There aren't two sides to child abuse. There aren't two sides to rape. And, there aren't two sides to enslaving someone. The only good slave master is the person who isn't a slave master.

@lovingit1000 We all are slaves in some capacity. Slaves to our jobs, this life and on and on... Not one person in this world cannot say that somewhere in their bloodlines that someone in their family wasn't a slave. We have to move on towards better things. The past is gone and you can't get it back. Some things are just wrong as you stated but you must remember... Man has had to develop. From times when Christ walked the earth to now... That is a lot of change! We have gained more sense.

The past includes the Confederate flag and monuments. Let them go. Lead by example, not words. Everyone can go back in their bloodlines and find someone who fought and maybe died for the wrong cause. No reason to cling to the reprehensible. It means you don't have the capacity to be self-critical or learn from your mistakes.

@LordDracsWife - Your little struggles are not slavery. I'm asking YOU for a time when it would be acceptable for someone else to treat you in the way that slaves were treated in the Antebellum South. I suspect there wouldn't be any time when you would accept this and there SHOULDN'T BE any time when anyone should accept this. There is only one side in this discussion and the Confederates were on the wrong side of it. The equivalent of your flag is the Nazi flag. At least the Germans repented.

@lovingit1000 In my history, My people owned plantations and owned slaves. We have documentation that says even after the "Lincoln Freedom Act" that we still own all of the descendants from the slaves that our people owned years ago. WE do not act upon these because we are civil now. It wasn't as bad as yankees make it sound for the blacks. Many after freed were homeless and had no trade. Many couldn't get a job and thousands died from starvation. So it seems they should have stayed!

@LordDracsWife - Would it have been okay for the people who your ancestors enslaved to have owned you or your ancestors if some paper said it was okay? I think you would think no type of paper would have given them the authority. You are trying to minimize (wasn't as bad as they say it was) and justify (other people did it too) things to save your own soul. These people were uneducated because your ancestors kept them like this. I would rather starve to death a free man than be anybody's slave.

@LordDracsWife - And, regarding letting it go, the same thing could be said about the all the Confederate flags and monuments, etc. People should take them down and let that go too.

@lovingit1000 I do not believe that the Confederate flags and monuments should be removed. They are part of Our Heritage. The Civil War was a terrible long drug out war. Thousands upon thousands died on both sides. To fight such a war and then want to take down our flag... NO WAY! We earned the right to fly it. I'm not prejudice of anyone, but I do believe that Southerners should remain Southern in every way. It is our culture and our heritage. We shall prevail. Bless your heart! ;-)

@LordDracsWife - The Germans have more sense not to fly a Nazi flag as a symbol of "their" heritage.

What nerve you have to say that a flag that OPPRESSED you almost as much as the slave should remain just because you were too naive to see it for what it was. You want to keep repeating something, instead of learning from your mistakes.

Anyway, you can't ask people to GET OVER THINGS, when you aren't willing too. The Confederates were wrong. Those who fought for them were wrong. GET OVER IT.

@lovingit1000 On the flip... you forget that Africans sold their own people and NORTHERNERS sold slaves to SOUTHERNERS! Slave traders bought them here on ships by the thousands.

@LordDracsWife - If a man rapes his wife, does that mean you can rape her too? This wouldn't hold up in a court of law. One wrong does not justify another wrong. Read the Texas Ordinance of Secession. The Confederates wanted to break off from the US, because they weren't able to move out of the dark ages. It seems their apples don't fall too far from the bush. Your flag is a symbol of the dark ages. If the heritage is wrong, there is no nobility in clinging to it. It keeps you in the dark ages.

@lovingit1000 If a man rapes his wife, that is their business. Afterall, they BOTH stood before a preacher and said vows which gives them both the right to do whatever they want within their union. As far as the Texas thing... I'm not concerned with it so it doesn't matter. There is nothing you can say or do that will change my mind on my views of The Civil War. I really don't like slavery and since it was abolished, I don't owe anyone anything. I will not be made to feel that way either.

@LordDracsWife - Read the Texas Ordinance of Secession. It explains very clearly why the Confederates fought. Every time you fly a Confederate flag, you are condoning it. If my ancestors had done something unjustifiable, I wouldn't be here celebrating it. I'd be hoping that they aren't burning in hell.

Americans think they are so good yet it is not really so long since they killed one another (American Civil war) and not that long since they had slavery and not very long ago since they had segregation.

Still they can make wonderful programmes with their evil history

@LLesleee - that's a very narrow-minded statement to make. I may think that I am good, but I do not think that it's b/c I am American. I may think that most Americans are good, but that doesn't mean that I don't understand the history of the United States, and its impact on the rest of the world - the good and the bad. What is your country of origin. I imagine that there is some evil history there, too.
