the word to this song are fucking incredible who wrote this song!! its so fucking wicked evil good!! the guitar is fucking masterful!! everything about this song is so perfect!!
This is my favorite album, I was listening to this album today, this is my third favorite song, behind Renegade (#1 fave) and I'm OK (2nd fave) My nickname is Queen of Spades because of this song lol
Great stuff.......truly what a classic rock album should be......and this was a great time to be around.....as a guitar player I always thought styx was under rated....but you can still see them around today.....Beware of the Queen.........
When I first bought this album, the one with the cover pressed onto the lp, and listened to Renegade, I remember so clearly the thought that ran thru my head: "this puts them in the class of Led Zeppelin" and to me they are one of the best bands ever and after more than 30 years of listening, they keep getting better.
Sorry in advance if this offends, but...I used to think the lady in this song was the lady on the album cover. Well she looks rich. I also remember, at 16 I did not know what Dennis meant by "safe in the scent of jasmine, so safe in her gold and lace" (well I was an idealistic and clueless teen lol)...but I definitely know what it means now (I'm not rich though, have to add lol).
The first time i heard this song i actually thought Styx was heavy metal. Please tell me i was not alone in that assumption. Would that be a commen misconseption?
@DerekBayRoberts1 No your right! When I was a youngster styx was considered a hard rock/sort of metal band, then the ballads came and we all left! Still some of the best heavy/melodic stuff out there for sure.
It amazes me how we lose things in time, and just a song can bring so many memories back !! What would you like too do again!! All the concerts were really great stoned or tripping, I like to experience them again straight, to see If we missed something!!
I bought this Lp in 1982...It's unbelievable that 30 years later I' still fashinated by this sound...It's reminding me memories lost in time..Amazing!
Damn.....I haven't heard this song in years!! Still sounds fantastic! I guess I need to get the "Pieces Of Eight" vinyl out for a spin, it's been way too long since I listened to it.......
I really thought Queen Of Spades was their last good album. Even though I saw the "Paradise Theatre" tour, didn't really care for the album. Bought it anyway because it was Styx.
Thanks for the great posts, brother! Many hours spent listenin' to the now somewhat obscure Styx tunes - castle Walls is next - Thanks again, & peace...
When my high school sweetheart left for the Navy in 1980 he bought me this album and Cornerstone. I played them each day at least once, played solitaire and did homework to it. Gosh what some great music!!! He became a drunk and I broke up with him, he married my sister. Love the music!
i used to have all of the albums and what i didn't have on vinyl i had on 8-track tapes. i've been trying to down load all of the songs so i can listen to them like i used to but been having a hard time getting them all. can't afford to outright buy them but can listen to them on my comp. uggg, if only i can remember all of the songs and on what album. *sigh*
@trikpnygrl hey we must be similar in age;). I had all but "Man of Miracles" on vinyl. None on 8 track (I was kinda picky with Styx and wanted to make sure I got all the words to the songs which the albums provided usually with the A & M label). I'm presently trying to download them as well (we must be somewhat kindred spirits:D). I also can't afford to buy the songs. Maybe we can pm sometime. I've got a pretty good memory for Styx' older stuff, like these songs/albums, etc. :).
not only is this song underrated, but sadly, many of today's youth don't know it. A true modern masterpiece, and still my favorite Styx song (and I DO HAVE all thier albums, so this isn't a snap judgement...)
Back in 1978, i was smoking sensimilla, thai stick and acapulco gold while listening to this song. I used to try and sing it while stoned...:-). I don't think I sounded very good. LOL
Uh, mr. bowler, they didn't fire Dennis, he quit. He had some sort of skin condition and told the band he needed to take a long hiatus, and ask them to put the tour on ice for a while, But Tommy and JY felt that if they stopped touring at that time, they would be DOA forever. (hello, VH1 Behind the Music?) So they decided to replace Dennis and continue on. IMHO, Gowan is a huge step down, and just dosen't work for me. Sometimes there are those that are not replaceable. Sure, Journey got lucky...
@kinkeelee I saw Styx in concert back in 2006 and although Dennis DeYoung was not with them the replacement (I'm guessing the same guy you are talking about) was pretty darn good...they had the place ROCKING!! And yes....this song is very underrated!!
yeah when you hear songs like this, who can ever say dennis deyoung can't write the hard rockin songs, i could make a list of his songs, so who cares if he writes those power ballads amd love songs, it's just a true testament to this mans true genius and talent, tommy and JY really screwed the pooch in my opinion firing dennis was the biggest mistake that band i now call stynx..damn i miss the good old days when seeing styx in concert was worth seeing
@TheBowler2010 Yes, yes yes!!!! Agree with you a billion times over!!! Finally, a kindred spirit :)! I've seen the same old argument on various styx songs comments section; some saying Dennis can't rock it, that he just writes the love songs and "musical type" songs, etc. etc. etc. Dennis is very very talented and definitely knows how to rock it. He's just such a versatile artist - most definitely a musical Genius!!! I also miss the good old Styx days when Dennis was in the band!!!
Dennis's vocals around 3.47 are Ace. Can anyone explain why Tommy's acoustic intro has a different tone at the end of the track? Don't forget JY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@orses4corses i have been in love with this song since i was a kid,
but this question made me go back and listen to it in a whole new way.
as with most styx songs, this is a multilayerd piece that is always unfolding. the intro is a 12 string acoustic guitar that starts on a major chord and progresses to a minor chord of the same "shape". but in the finish is a heavily processed major only chord,
that blends nicely with(and makes room for) the cello that takes the lead up to the fade-out
I am not what I would say a heavy metal fan -probably I like more pop and all those ballads from DDY- but I LOVE this song! It's mesmorizing. Makes me want to hear it over and over. DDY has an incredible voice! I thought it was about a witch of a woman, but it's really about heroin, someone wrote?
I think this and a handful of songs on the other Styx albums are greatly underrated. This is one of my favorites. the moral of the song: Be careful trusting luck, it will get you only so far and then in a blink of an eye it can betray and even lead to your death.
@mrroboto5785 you're so right. And not just "luck"; even if one makes an unwise decision (I made one very recently and it cost me nearly all my savings; and get this, I didn't even use the money for gambling or anything similar. Just a purchasing decision gone awry: The thing I'd bought cost $75 secondhand; paid a mover to deliver it to my place ($50) I couldn't keep the purchase; had to pay a mover ($60) to remove the large item I'd purchased) total cost $185 dollars - all for nought (nothing)!
One of the five greatest Guitar Rock bands of the 70s and 80s. I can still remember listening to them on the poor little black transistor radio I used to carry back in those days...before there was such a thing as a Boom Box. or a Walkman.
Wow, this was one of the first albums I owned as a young boy. Parents bought it for me at a Wherehouse. Took it upstairs and played it on my sister's plastic Emerson phonograph; one of the fold up suitcase thingys.
I think this is Styx's hardest rocking song they ever did. The message in the lyrics is not hard to gather exactly what they talking about--heroin abuse. At the time, the most popular abused drug--next to marijuana. One thing I have always loved about Styx music, their style is what I like to call, "Life Music." Stories of lives.
@debra195942 me too, i think Stairway has a better solo, at least when played live, but smb has a better intro, better riff, better drums, better bass, better synth ... every member got the chance to show his skill with that song
@thatOtherDude100 The members of Styx each has his own creative genius going on. And I appreciate the fact that their very creativity was neither originated in a chemical state nor polluted by it. And Smoke14ekomS up above is just plain wrong.
Styx was one of the very few 'clean' 80s rock legends.
@wakaw07 Tommy Shaw said in an interview -Styx Story part 4- that he started "self-medicating" after starting the Kilroy tour because he was not happy with what they were doing. That would put it at mid-80's. Do you have a source for your statement about him starting earlier? Or was that well-known? I wonder if he really started drugs because of Kilroy, or was it a convenient place to put the blame (and good for TV drama)?
@bljcga you may have a point about placing the blame on kilroy? As far me knowing a source about tommy starting earlier....well that was just speculation on my part. But then again if I remember properly Jim cahill who worked for styx mentioned in styx story part? that he and tommy used cocaine to convince radio programmers to play the grand illusion album and that was in the 1977, so I'm guessing they were in on the good times! For the record, tommy is great role model for sobriety for myself!
I saw Styx 3 times in concert, beginning with the "Grand Illusion" tour. This has always been one of my favorite tracks. I played Pieces Of Eight endlessly, they were awesome live. The sappy ballads later didn't do them justice, because they could really rock and put on great shows.
theres an entire universe of class and quality that jelly haired kids are growing up an missing its our job to educate them all,,, im doin my bit YOU CAN TOO
I remember this years ago, when one of the only outlets we had apart from Live Venues, was a Pirate Radio Station in Liverpool (England) Called Radio Jackie North, and this was among the tracks which they played on a few occasions. it's range was very limited because it only broadcast on Medium Wave (AM) and was quite often getting Raided by the Post Office as it was actually causing an offence (the sane offence incidentally that drove Radio Caroline an a few other Pirate stations off the air)
i first heard this song and Styx when i was 10. it introduced me to a harder genre of rock like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Aerosmith. How can anyone not think of styx as a hard rock band after hearing this song. Metallica could cover this song.
@DerekBayRoberts1 It's funny you should say that - I remember buying this album when it was first released, and arguing with my best friend (and fellow Kiss freak) that this song rocked just as hard as anything Kiss ever did. I still think I'm right!
Awesome music. Haunting, melodic intro.....then goes into one of my favorite riffs of all time at 1:58.......then the drums kick in.......ahhh.......bitchin. And of course later on....HAHAHA.....you lose!................STYX will rock on forever.
im going to see sytx in pensivania in august i cant wait im 16 and i love styx it already creates great memories and thier songs have helped me through multiple depressions thank you styxfan93 for putting up my favorite styx song =)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[f] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
In response to your reply, I listened to those 2 songs again. I've been skipping over them for years. They are bad. If you don't like Mr. Roboto, you have to at least give them credit for trying something different. It's a very unusual song.
@Canam7 in fairness, I have to agree with your Mr. Roboto comment. Styx was a band that grew throughout the years, trying something new, as you said. I liked it a lot, being a sort of scifi fan that I am, LOL and being the nwo protestor that I am now, love it even more for its "orwellian" theme. mmm = nwo. Wish the whole Kilroy movie was posted on here. I could only find parts 1 and 2.
thank you styxfan93 for putting this on i hate how my generation is all about pop and rap im 15 and i think styx is one of the greatest things that ever happened to music and this is one of my favorite song thanks again :3
Even Styx doesn't seem to think this was a great song. I have the Styx Anthology CD, and this tune is not included. There are 35 songs on 2 CD's. There's a few clunkers on there like, Best Thing, and You Need Love, but not a great song like this.
@Canam7 Best Thing and You Need Love clunkers? Those are two great songs from the first two albums. If anything's a clunker you have to include Mr. Roboto and Sing For the Day, those were their clunkers.
@stlouisherdfan I don't know about the ladies, but the album cover's artwork had something to do with Easter Island. That's all I know. I know you didn't ask me, but thought I'd throw this in anyway lol.
One of JY best solos ever. He has heart and sole. He is so underated. You will have to listen to the wooden nickle albums to hear classic JY. Hope his wife is doing better. God bless you JY.

One of the five greatest Guitar Rock bands of the 70s and 80s. I can still remember listening to them on the poor little black transistor radio I used to carry back in those days...before there was such a thing as a Boom Box. or a Walkman.
Am I really that old? I guess I am...

GREAT SONG.,.,

Wow, this was one of the first albums I owned as a young boy. Parents bought it for me at a Wherehouse. Took it upstairs and played it on my sister's plastic Emerson phonograph; one of the fold up suitcase thingys.
John Ponozzo was such a great rock drummer. RIP.

Smoke14ekomS 1 year ago
@Smoke14ekomS if you think this is their hardest rocking song, have you heard Quick is the Beat of my Heart?

@thatOtherDude100 Each has its own merit! I like Styx over LZ. preference
debra195942 1 year ago
@debra195942 me too, i think Stairway has a better solo, at least when played live, but smb has a better intro, better riff, better drums, better bass, better synth ... every member got the chance to show his skill with that song
thatOtherDude100 1 year ago
@thatOtherDude100 The members of Styx each has his own creative genius going on. And I appreciate the fact that their very creativity was neither originated in a chemical state nor polluted by it. And Smoke14ekomS up above is just plain wrong.
Styx was one of the very few 'clean' 80s rock legends.
debra195942 1 year ago
@debra195942 Actually Tommy Shaw was pretty messed up in the late 70's-early 80's.
wakaw07 1 year ago
@wakaw07 Tommy Shaw said in an interview -Styx Story part 4- that he started "self-medicating" after starting the Kilroy tour because he was not happy with what they were doing. That would put it at mid-80's. Do you have a source for your statement about him starting earlier? Or was that well-known? I wonder if he really started drugs because of Kilroy, or was it a convenient place to put the blame (and good for TV drama)?
bljcga 10 months ago
@bljcga you may have a point about placing the blame on kilroy? As far me knowing a source about tommy starting earlier....well that was just speculation on my part. But then again if I remember properly Jim cahill who worked for styx mentioned in styx story part? that he and tommy used cocaine to convince radio programmers to play the grand illusion album and that was in the 1977, so I'm guessing they were in on the good times! For the record, tommy is great role model for sobriety for myself!

The 12-string intro is Tommy. First solo is JY. Tommy plays the second one. JY plays the one at 5:40.

I saw Styx 3 times in concert, beginning with the "Grand Illusion" tour. This has always been one of my favorite tracks. I played Pieces Of Eight endlessly, they were awesome live. The sappy ballads later didn't do them justice, because they could really rock and put on great shows.

DerekBayRoberts1 1 year ago
@DerekBayRoberts1 It's funny you should say that - I remember buying this album when it was first released, and arguing with my best friend (and fellow Kiss freak) that this song rocked just as hard as anything Kiss ever did. I still think I'm right!

In response to your reply, I listened to those 2 songs again. I've been skipping over them for years. They are bad. If you don't like Mr. Roboto, you have to at least give them credit for trying something different. It's a very unusual song.
Canam7 1 year ago
@Canam7 in fairness, I have to agree with your Mr. Roboto comment. Styx was a band that grew throughout the years, trying something new, as you said. I liked it a lot, being a sort of scifi fan that I am, LOL and being the nwo protestor that I am now, love it even more for its "orwellian" theme. mmm = nwo. Wish the whole Kilroy movie was posted on here. I could only find parts 1 and 2.

That is JY all the way. Remember he is the rocker of the group and he uses the whammy bar.

Even Styx doesn't seem to think this was a great song. I have the Styx Anthology CD, and this tune is not included. There are 35 songs on 2 CD's. There's a few clunkers on there like, Best Thing, and You Need Love, but not a great song like this.
Canam7 1 year ago
Don't know why. I'd put it in their top five songs.
Lissk92 1 year ago
@Canam7 Best Thing and You Need Love clunkers? Those are two great songs from the first two albums. If anything's a clunker you have to include Mr. Roboto and Sing For the Day, those were their clunkers.

@Canam7
It can be found, however, on "Greatest Hits Vol. 2" (1996).

@stlouisherdfan I don't know about the ladies, but the album cover's artwork had something to do with Easter Island. That's all I know. I know you didn't ask me, but thought I'd throw this in anyway lol.
