  • Mahalia Jackson died 40 years ago today, aged 60, in Evergreen Park, Illinois.

  • This Song is so true, every time you turn the news on there's nothing to hear but something

    Bad.

  • This movie was..wow...

    i was bawling

  • 1:25 o she sent chills thru me n goosebumps all over me

  • powerful singer

  • it's amazing how this song with that movie crossed barriers, making everyone feel the same thing intentially reminds us there might still be some humanity left on this earth

  • Mahalia Jackson- A gospel singer like no other. Truly God given & truly God inspired. I also saw the movie when i was very young. Then a few years ago when I grew into an adult. Mahalia Jackson has left a mark on my heart that moves me. She still leaves the beauty of God with us. Peace be with you.

  • @outerspaceoutpost that is true amen to this

  • @mattiepearl77 Thanks! while watching the people, do you think that at least some of them were acting or were truly moved as well? If I were there I'd know which one I'd be. Just sitting and listening on my computer, I can just feel those tears with a mind of their own & my heart being touched to it's deepest level. Peace be with you.

  • @outerspaceoutpost yes it true ever time i watch it the tears keep falling. i would hope that they were touch even if they were acting, its such a beautiful song and her with that voice makes it all so much more special some people just have that spirit. Peace be with you as well.

  • @mattiepearl77 I fully agree. It's been great speaking with you. Amen & Peace be with you.

  • What movie is this from? I saw this once when I was younger and never saw it again. And seeing Mahalia Jackson sing reminded me of when my mom told me she and her entire class viewed her body when she passed away. I think they had the public viewing at the New Orleans convention center. Am I right?

  • @Deedy06 Immitation Of Life Starring Lana Turner

  • this have me balling my eyes out!! this movie is so sad!

  • Beautiful

  • fantastic video thank u

  • I heard Mahalia sang, and I know'd dere was a God...

  • Where preacher's words come to an end is where Mahalia's voice begins.

  • what movie is this from??

  • @pebbles5166 / THIS SONG WAS IN THE MOVIE, IMITATION OF LIFE. I CRIED SO HARD WHEN SHE WAS SINGING.

  • R.I.P. to all that has pass away

  • This is my favorite movie of all time..I have watched it many times, but if you will look at the young girl face as they ride off it is something sort of cold and sinister in it. It is almost as if she did the big production to fool everyone and it keeps you wondering did her heart change towards her mother? AWESOME MOVIE

  • Amazing im so lucky and blessed to have her as a cousin on my dads side now i know where my talents came from!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • R.I.P. Ma 08/30/64-01/09/12.

I'm sorry for your loss---your mother is in Heaven <3

I am sorry the funeral was not as you wished it to be, with the song missing

I feel certain, tho you could not hear it, because You wanted it--- an Angel sang it for your mother at the service :) and your Mother heard it, clear as a bell

God Bless You during your time of sorrow, and always

    Be kind to yourself

  • @GGiblet u just made me cry so hard and i want to thank you so much for say that u really made me understand thank you so much god bless you :)

  • @mattiepearl77

    and God Bless YOU! <3

    everything will be alright :)

    hang in there

you might want to listen to Sizzla---I know he is reggae and may not be to your taste, but some of his songs are very uplifting when you feel low

I like best "Be Strong" "Thank You Mama" and "Dry Cry"

I will keep you in my thots and prayers.

I'm so glad that some little something I said was of help to you :)

  • MEU DEUS ..........................DEMAIS

  • Such a magnificent voice. I wouldn't mind seeing the film.

  • @fsumpter You should, I have loved it since I was really young. It's so sad though.

  • @FabulouslyNatural You're right it truly was. I got the opportunity to watch it this past weekend, and I cried my eyes out, all through the ending.

  • Mahalia was right to sing that song, but this world is still troubled

  • @MsAKA40 true

  • Lol my bad I ment to say @mygirlruth

  • @mygirltruth I agree, they do need to make a movie about her

  • This was the best ending that this movie could have had. I get all farklempt every time I see it.

  • *shivers

  • Hollywood should do a movie about this woman!

  • Ms. Mahalia is the Queen of Gospel!

  • @mygirlruth so truu <3

  • Got goose bumps again.....

  • I love mahalia jackson... She is my inspiration

  • That gave me chills! God bless her soul<3

  • Comment removed

  • You feel the emotion in the voice of the singer! yes it is that Black Gospel Spiritual!

  • The Queen of Gospel.

  • Anything Ms. Mahalia sings is golden to my ears. Her voice refreshes my spiritual battle, and lets me keep on fighting the good fight!

  • meu D-s! que voz que unção...

  • This is my first time hearing this song and I have to say this was amazing.

  • Thanks so much for posting this masterpiece. I have watched this movie back in the 80ies when I was a kid in Germany. Here the movie is named "Solange es noch Menschen gibt" ~As long as there are still human beings might be a literal translation. We sat in our living room and cried our eyes out. Really the main plot of this film is the racism of those times in the USA. The girl was forced to hurt her mother though she loved her because a stupid society makes that necessary. I'm white by the way.

  • thank you Tweety, have to look if i can find the video somewhere:)

  • what movie is this song from? amazing...

  • @1956moppie imitation of life

  • @1956moppie It's from The Imitation of Life.......

  • wonderful, leaves me tears

  • JESUS...YESSS

  • Wow!!!

  • we have 28 anti-Christ among us.....

  • @godley2 those 28 people do NOT know real music. they would know music if it screwed them and gave them little quarter notes!

  • JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • where can i watch this film?

  • Taken from one of the best films ever made

  • you better singer mahalia !!

  • no matter what type of music people do out there, I haven't seen anyone else sing with that much compassion and feeling in words. Not every song today is bad, but not ONE is THIS GREAT!

  • this song still gives me chills...

  • @Syanara69 I'm 32, been watching this since i was a kid and i still get goose bumps.

  • anch'io la voglio il giorno del mio funerale...!!!

  • There has never been anyone quite like her. She was 'touched'!

  • This song is so beautiful and emotional. The ending of this movie always makes me cry. Her daughter's struggle with her identity, wanting to pass for white because of how unjust society is, seeing her mother can't aspire to anything more than a maid. She went as far as to deny her own mother, how tragic to realize how much she appreciated her when she had gone.

  • @corcovadoquelindo it is easily one of the most devastatingly sad scenes in film, ever.

  • @corcovadoquelindo I saw that movie a LONG LONG time ago...it is very moving, isn't it!

  • Why would anybody feel the need to dislike this song?? smh I don't get it

  • Jesus knows this trouble,sister.Amen

  • Beautiful blessing

  • Awesome awesome awesome....God bless us in Jesus name...Amen

  • After she performed this ethereal hymn, touching every soul in the audience, she could not drink water at the same fountain as a white criminal. God- or somebody- forgive us!

  • I am sharing the american gospel songs as negro spirituals with the people in my country!!

  • @KizaSoze25 I want this at my funeral too

  • My mother wants this song at her funeral. I have a hard time with this song now. It's beautiful, but now you know it's place in my life now. :(

  • Hey can you imagine if Mahalia Jackson sang at Princess Diana's Funeral like this. She would have the whole world sobbing. I remember when Elton John sang and I cried, if she sang I would have been no good.

  • There isn't a singer on this planet (excluding Patti Labelle) that has a voice strong enough to portray Mahalia Jackson in a film, or any other place. Fantasia please sit down. Jennifer can't do it either. She has a beautiful voice but she screams it, and she doesn't have enough bass to match Ms. Jackson.

  • My favorite movie. Ms. Jackson always breaks me in too with this song.

  • Zij is de STEM.Niemand kan zo zingen als zij.eenvoudig:WAUWWWW

  • this is for MJ......i love you brother...for those left behind you there is pain to come and go and God's gonna get us thru....but theres no more pain for you MJ....R I P with our heavenly Father &.may God bless all his children...

  • Miss Mahalia, you sing to God.

    And he listens xxx

  • The Queen of Gospel Mahalia Jackson, the1st of My Favorite Female Singers of All-Time, including Marian Anderson, Odetta, Leontyne Price, Maria Callas, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Minnie Riperton, Martha Wash, Queen of SalSoul Loleatta Holloway, Stephanie Mills, etc etc.

  • Un film qui m'a touché. A découvrir!

  • dios se parece a mi tia Tiodula de Barlovento...

  • I hear Fantasia is playing her in a movie. I think Jennifer Hudson would do a better job. Fantasia doesn't sing, she bellows...

  • Thank you. I was unaware of this.

  • whats truly remarkable is this movie rips you apart before you even get tothis scene and Mahalia just brings chills through your veigns with this amazing singing

  • WOW. Goosebumps, tears welled up in my eyes. Anointed and talented...WOW

  • I prefer the Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers version of the movie but I forgot how much this Mahallia jewel moved me. An absolute favorite!!

  • Love this!!!!

  • I just odered a 4 CD's collection of this remarkable woman with this tremendous voice... whow. even if you hear this song for the 100th time, you still cant resist the tears in your eyes...

  • i get goose bumps listening to this

  • What a stupid thing to say....(sung like a true slave)

  • This part of Imitation of Life makes me cry

  • Thank you so much for uploading this video. My soul needed to hear Sister Mahalia Jackson singing from her soul of her faith that troubles will soon be over and she's going home to be with her Lord. Her voice is so powerful and so sincere and so filled with love for God that I can't help but weep at the sight and sound of her. RIP Mahalia Jackson you are loved and appreciated all the more now and by an entirely new generation. God rest your soul!

  • my most favorite part of this movie....next to the very end when sarah jane comes running out of nowhere and plays the grieving daughter.

  • Oh wait, nope... my bad.

  • She put me in the mind of Esther Rolle.

  • i cried...cry..so hard on this part every time

  • we need good ol' gospel like this.

  • @sherriaris

Mythological music is very pretty. For instance the music of the greeks when one died and went to hades. I <3 mythology.

  • @ Wisterialodge. Watched it more than 27 years ago. Never forgot it. My 10 year old niece at the time, sobbed. It is a real tear jerker. Teaches what is most important in life.

  • such an epic performance...she is the greatest, ever

  • The movie is To Serve and Love.

  • @MrKerwin79 Imitation of life, saddest movie ever

  • Imitation of Life

  • Can someone tell me the name of this movie?

  • I love her

  • My God, What a voice!! My grandmother loved her, now I know why.

  • cudo....

  • Mahalia is the only one not acting in this scene. She truly feels what she's singing. She truly feels the tragedy.

  • This song should be banned, and I wish I never heard this womans voice! She is totally amazing, and it breaks my heart to hear her sing, and this song, from the saddest film ever - Mahalia, if you read these words, just want you to know, you are one hell of a voice and thank the Lord, I found you and can listen to your voice and connect. Pure joy x x and to the person who posted this? I hate you! lol x Thank you very much. Made me happy, sad and tearful - a joy! x 100%

  • Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mahalia Jackson. I had to take a few minutes to listen to her incredible, passionate voice. You are truly missed, Ms. Jackson.

  • @tootiema1 Mahalia Jackson is my all time favorite singer. Not just gospel but all time of any genre. I remember the big ole album of her we had that I wore out.got. She lives on in song.and in my heart forever.

  • @dlholland83 I'm sorry about your loss of your dad. That is really nice and cool that a friend sang this song for your dad and your family, wow. I miss my dad still too, and it's been 20 years. It's nice to have photos and memories.

  • @24Scotian Not true, I dont think it's nice nor fair to say that just because someone doesn't like this, it "has to be an atheist", that's a form of prejudice too. Some people just don't like certain types of music, they may love techno or rap or whatever, & not like gospel or blues, or Celtic. I LOVE this song, I love Ms. Jackson, I love this movie. Beautiful voice, beautiful movie, with many poignant messages about how people treat each other.True what you said, to each their own.

  • Thank you, Lord... Soon it will be done..Glory be to God !!

  • This part makes me cry everytime

  • No one holds a candle to Ms. Jackson. NOBODY.

  • I`m going home to live with my Lord, boy she can put it across, match that girls if you can....

  • I hate stupid religious superstition but this is the greatest song I never heard.

  • @Keukeu45 I feel ya. I am a devout non-believer in "revealed" religion, but masses and requiems and other spiritual genre are my soul music.

  • worlds greatest gospel singer she could make any song sound good we were so blessed to hear her songs and they will never die oh how I love Mahalia she was one in a million.

  • Thumbs up if Conservapedia sent you here

  • AAAAAARGHHHHHH wooow T_____T

    Imitation of Life

    The 1959 with Lana Turner

  • Great song, wonderful sad movie!!!

  • Boy, was I way off. I looked it up, 1959

  • Was this in 1971?

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I gotta find the movie this came from. Thanks again.

  • Two minutes and eleven seconds to steal the whole movie. What a performance!

  • @Wisterialodge I know what you mean. She was also Aretha Franklin's Godmother. She and Reverend CL Franklin were good friends and she visited the house in Detroit back in the day. My mother said that after that movie, whenever she, her sisters or friends ever did anything bad, their mothers would say. "Hey remember what happened to Sarah Jane?" This is next to Terms Of Endeament, Peyton Place, and Madame X as one of the best Mother-Daughter Movies of all time.

  • wow what a voice' s

  • every time i see that part i cry, i couldn't resist crying now.

  • OMG!!! I've been looking for this movie forever but didn't know the name. Thanks you so very much!!!!!!!!

  • incredible!

  • Her voice brings tears to my eyes...

  • Are there any woman who sings as Mahalia?

  • @MySpring75 I have not heard of any. She was so classic and her voice was just beautiful!

  • @MySpring75 Yeah, good question. I would sooo love to find some good singers right now, in our time, who we can see perform. Some of my favorite singers are Mississippi Fred McDowell and Leadbelly, and Ms. Jackson. Wow, can you imagine finding someone who sings like this? They must be out there?

  • Passion. Pain. Depth. Brilliance.

  • 23 people had chills up their spine that were so intense they accidentally hit dislike instead of like.

  • What a great lady, she really lived her life like her beliefs in God

  • Lord have mercy, i get chills when i hear this song,a truly amazing songstress.

  • Repentance...."God be merciful to me a sinner"....Luke 14:16-18.

  • WONDERFUL SPIRITUALLY VOICE!!!!

  • one of my favorite movies . mahalia is why i took a look at this movie.

  • Truelly Anointed.

  • Mahalia stole the movie.

  • I too have watched this movie many times. If you've never seen it I just can't recommend it enough. If you aren't weeping by this point or the next scene watch it again ;) I'll have the kleenex ready for you. Sometimes I can get past this point w/o crying but never the very last scene of the funeral procession and the daughter (trying to give Spoilers out).
