here is something that is actually really about the series itself and not history... ^^
i recently watched two german war films: stalingrad and das boot. what i realized was one thing: the german movies don't glorify to be a soldier. their main theme is not heroism but accuracy. watching band of brother, private ryan etc. i always feel like watching an action movie placed in ww2. the americans are the sympathetique tough guys who will make it in the end. that's what the audience expects.
If anything they should have covered some of the British contribution to the liberation of europe as it was not just the let coming Americans who only decided to come along when the Japanese attacked.

WHY did they ruin the miniseries by making the germans act like complete morons in every episode. You see Americans using firing positions, aiming shots and decimating the Germans. And at the same time you see the germans continuously fumbling/ dropping weapons, not really shooting back, running randomly in mass through wide open territory getting mowed down by machine guns, not using any kind of cover at all. If germans really fought like headless chickens, they wouldnt have conquered europe.

The Germans had better training, discipline, weapons and tactics than all of their enemies. The reason they lost the warwas that they spread themselves too thin meaning they got themselves too many enemies and incompetent political leadership. People who see BoB don't want to see the uncomfortable truth that Americans won by quantity over quality, meaning that a lot of Americans died in order to defeat the few remaining German soldiers.

Germany was flooded with anti-jew, anti-gay, anti-black and anti-american propoganda for the best part of 10 years. It wasn't simply an issue of orders, it was an issue of being engulfed in a totalitarian society where the perceived norms were incredibly distorted and messed up.

here is something that is actually really about the series itself and not history... ^^
i recently watched two german war films: stalingrad and das boot. what i realized was one thing: the german movies don't glorify to be a soldier. their main theme is not heroism but accuracy. watching band of brother, private ryan etc. i always feel like watching an action movie placed in ww2. the americans are the sympathetique tough guys who will make it in the end. that's what the audience expects.
