When I read these books as a kid I never thought "anti-religion". God exists in the books! No one in the book is an atheist, nor should they be!
But it does shed light on how things would be if God were a real part of the world. If you're part of reality you get treated like a real being. Meaning not everyone is going to unquestioningly kiss your ass just because you made the universe(s).

Yes, read all of them and make up your own mind. The Bible is a patchy inconsistent and self-contradictory anthology of ancient Hebrew and Greek writings. The Pilgrim's Progress is the most over rated classic in English literature written by a man who was anti-Catholic, neurotic, very keen to find fault in others and intolerant of people who did not share his own narrow-minded views.
The bible spanning several different "Hebrew eras and also being applied in Hellenistic culture is hardly a weakness, it is a tremendous strength.
Also, I would have to contest your view of it as patchy and self contradictory. Contradict in that different writers and figures in it contradictory, absolutely and this is hardly a weakness. Example, Ecclesiastes shows how Solomon disagree with almost every New Testament author. James and Paul disagree, in a sense, and Peter then sets it strait.
@Pandaren123 - I am sorry to hear that it has not done so well. I have read two of the trilogy and have found The Golden Compass and the other book to be quite entertaining - not at all "anti-religion" or "anti-christianity".
@Pandaren123 The Film actually according to what I read cost approx. $180 million and it grossed approximately $70 million in U.S. by time it was relased world wide it grossed approximately $372 million dollars and that's not counting TV broadcasters, DVD and Blue Ray releases however the rights to the film according to what I read were sold so most of the profit did not go to New Line Studio that produced it.

i agree. I loved reading the story so much... and he puts up a good point about organized religion nonetheless, even if he was writing for the story's sake. Religious people should still read his books, just for entertainment and well-roundedness.

After reading this series, I felt more refreshed by reading than I had since my early days with, say, Carl Sagan or John Milton. Which, as it turns out, His Dark Materials feels like a mixture of both.
Outstanding series. Recommended to anyone and everyone, no matter their religion.

I've never been to church in my life. I've never read the bible. My mother used to be into New Age but I was already over 18 at that point and never spoke about it with me. None of my family on both my dad and mothers side are religious. So your assumption was wrong.

About 2 and a half years ago I told someone who was trying to tell me about God that I didn't want to hear about it and asked if we could talk about other things as the discussion didn't interest me. This person stopped it. Months later I was researching Freemasonry and stumbled onto the name Alice Bailey and her company "Lucis Trust". Weeks of researching.....
...later and finding out how deep this was really opened my eyes to the world we live in and who the people in power believe in (Lucifer).
When I say weeks of researching it was 12-16 hours per day for weeks to get to this point. Next time I visited this person who I asked nicely to stop telling me about God, well I had to apologise and this person was not like "I told you so" instead I got hugged lol and the joy on the face of the person was beautiful.

i can't stand how people won't let their children see the movie or read the books. In a way they are saying " i will not expose my children to opposing views, for fear that they will start to question what they've been told." If the religion is real, if the child is smart enough to make the decision to follow a religion, they are smart enough to be allowed to see views contrary to theirs and make a decision

After reading this series, I felt more refreshed by reading than I had since my early days with, say, Carl Sagan or John Milton. Which, as it turns out, His Dark Materials feels like a mixture of both.
Outstanding series. Recommended to anyone and everyone, no matter their religion.

I've never been to church in my life. I've never read the bible. My mother used to be into New Age but I was already over 18 at that point and never spoke about it with me. None of my family on both my dad and mothers side are religious. So your assumption was wrong.
I didn't stumble into religion lol. Religion is fake and has nothing to do with Jesus Christ.

I really couldn't explain in the 500 characters allowed of how I got to this point.
I'm 27 now. About 2 and a half years ago I told someone who was trying to tell me about God that I didn't want to hear about it and asked if we could talk about other things as the discussion didn't interest me. This person stopped it. Months later I was researching Freemasonry and stumbled onto the name Alice Bailey and her company "Lucis Trust". Weeks of researching.....

When I say weeks of researching it was 12-16 hours per day for weeks to get to this point. Next time I visited this person who I asked nicely to stop telling me about God, well I had to apologise and this person was not like "I told you so" instead I got hugged lol and the joy on the face of the person was beautiful.

I've seen this film and I know hoe deep books go against such short viewing material. This film shows that religion is evil and twisted, children have daemons (yeah when demons are your companions all will be well :P) and Dust.
That is just a few words and easily explains that Pullman is NOT encouraging anyone to explore as you said Godinflames. That is in your face manipulation.

KeithTruth at least you know. Anyone that researches what I've written about below will see what Keith and I are on about. The writer does hate god though (or the idea of him) and would like children to see it his way which is a bit harsh to try and impose that on an impressionable mind - The bible and the teachings isn't really about in schools any more and I think that's fair enough but for him to try and teach the opposite to kids is just as bad as them getting forced to read the bible.

No. It is not that they are weak-minded, but that the foundation of their faith is weak. In most cases, such a foundation is logic, the definitive faculty of mind and thought. People are taught to have faith in God, to believe in God, without being submerged into the spiritual life behind the belief--the love for God, the love for one's neighbor, the great commission, the performance of miracles, the worship of the Lord, etcetera.

Yes, there are many things that work as testimonies to God, but if you look in the bible, the old and new testiment, some of the big names, ones depicted to teach of His glory, or to serve as examples for us, Moses, Mary, The 12 Disciples, they all question god.

i can't stand how people won't let their children see the movie or read the books. In a way they are saying " i will not expose my children to opposing views, for fear that they will start to question what they've been told." If the religion is real, if the child is smart enough to make the decision to follow a religion, they are smart enough to be allowed to see views contrary to theirs and make a decision

you have a point, but people are scared about their kids because religion is something kids dont get at school or in most movies so it isnt really impressed on their minds much, and whether its correct/logical or not isnt important to kids these days, they tend to want to do the easy thing. so its just one of those things that is probably gonna push more and more kids away from church. make sense?

I think the easy thing would be to go to Church and to never question it. I don't think kids are going to be pushed away from it because of these movies or these books. I think Church does it on it's own by condemning movies and books that are popular and closing the door to other ideas.
