Be happy that AIC found this guy, he has his own style and when he performs old songs he sings them very well. I don't think there's a better substitute. I dont care what anyone says Alice in Chains is No doubt the BEST from the so called Grunge era. Their music was always hardcore rock to the fullest. Even their softer tracks still move you. AlC are my favorite rock band ever
Personally I enjoyed this whole album. Almost every track. Though never a fanatical fan of AIC, I have always enjoyed and respected their work. Staley was/is irreplacable. What struck me with this album is that they did not try to mimic the Staley-era music but came up with a different sound, though anyone that's even remotely familiar with AIC can recognize this tone. As others have already stated:Ppl often forget that Cantrel was just as strong a driving force in this band. Duvall excells.

Hey, was reading debates on who the lead singer is. AIC picked up a good second guitarist and singer with DuVall. Look at Kiss everyone in that band sang something and it was great. The lead singer was whoever took lead on that song. Can't go wrong adding another member that can do both good, it just adds to the sound pallet you can present as a band. Why even debate it?

As long as the song sounds good, I don't care who does lead vocals. I assume Jerry Cantrell has the best judgment about who performs what on a song since he comes up with the majority of the music and the lyrics.

Layne can't be replaced but hey, since the band chose to add DuVall and move on, isn't it fair that their "fans" should do the same or stop listening to their new music?

"Dirt" rules! esp. that i have it on LP with the big art and full-sound- all of their albums, singles and e.p.s are GREAT. ....it's been alot of years for us to have some more of these beats, bass, guit.s, voc's, melodies and insight's that make up AliceInChains . i am Glad i am able to Get It...this album is GREAT and should take no beating ever.

@HUGEcockmann Hell yeah. "Take Her Out" is very underrated. My favorite after "Last of My Kind", "Private Hell", "A Looking in View" and "Acid Bubble" (in that order). What I love about this new incarnation of Alice is that you can't lose with either DuVall or Cantrell doing lead vocals: either way, their songs will still kick ass.

I really think DuVall was a miracle delivered to AIC. He works, and while he may sound similar his predecessor, it's easy to tell it's not Staley. It's not a band trying to raise the dead, it's not a band succumbing to trends... it simply is... Alice In Chains. Always has, always will be.

So it wouldn't be good for the band to pick someone whos voice doesn't mesh with Jerry's voice. That's why Layne and Jerry were so good together.

AIC is such a great band. A lot of artists lose their touch between albums, some are clearly better than others or the bands change their sound completely. However, this is not the case for AIC, they are pretty consistent and their music always rocks. Can't wait to see them in concert next month! Their music gets to me without needing vocals jumping all over the place. Jerry and Duvall's harmonies are deep and are absolutely amazing.

Jesus...arguing about 911 on an AIC video...if 911 was an inside job, someone would have uncovered undeniable proof by now. Too many people would have been involved for it to remain a "theory"....all the physics have been explained away, so there's no proof there....also, great AIC song. Hey, was reading debates on who the lead singer is. AIC picked up a good second guitarist and singer with DuVall. Look at Kiss everyone in that band sang something and it was great. The lead singer was whoever took lead on that song. Can't go wrong adding another member that can do both good, it just adds to the sound pallet you can present as a band. Why even debate it?

As long as the song sounds good, I don't care who does lead vocals. I assume Jerry Cantrell has the best judgment about who performs what on a song since he comes up with the majority of the music and the lyrics.

Cantrell (surprisingly) took the lead on the rest and had DuVall do harmonies with him. So many people are bent out of shape, blowing shit out of proportion, still hurt that Layne is gone. Layne can't be replaced but hey, since the band chose to add DuVall and move on, isn't it fair that their "fans" should do the same or stop listening to their new music?

i reall think duvall sucks and that anyone can do only vibrato like he does. his grunge rock scream is nonexistant, they say he's the lead singer but yet on just about everyone of their new songs he's singin backup or him and jerry are doubling. and on the old stuff....he shouldn't even try the old stuff, once you've heard layne sing them you don't want to hear anyone else but him. it would be like trading a gold brick for a quarter. i'd rather live in the past then listen to the shitty present.

What I love about this new incarnation of Alice is that you can't lose with either DuVall or Cantrell doing lead vocals: either way, their songs will still kick ass.

I really think DuVall was a miracle delivered to AIC. He works, and while he may sound similar his predecessor, it's easy to tell it's not Staley. It's not a band trying to raise the dead, it's not a band succumbing to trends... it simply is... Alice In Chains. Always has, always will be.

AIC is such a great band. A lot of artists lose their touch between albums, some are clearly better than others or the bands change their sound completely. However, this is not the case for AIC, they are pretty consistent and their music always rocks. Can't wait to see them in concert next month! Their music gets to me without needing vocals jumping all over the place. Jerry and Duvall's harmonies are deep and are absolutely amazing.

@juddy219 Nah, if that were to happen than they would only model sprites of the current line-up like they did for Metallica and then kids would only know who William DuVall is and not Layne. Unless they were to include him when you select the older songs that were sung by him.

all guys who ditch William DuVall should just shut it and be happy. Of Course he's not Layne, no one is Layne! Everyone was sad when he died but you know, you gotta move on. You people who criticize DuVall should be happy that AIC found him. He is great. He manages to sound like Layne and still have his own style. Of course he doesn't have Layne's power and energy, but it's pretty fuckin close. There is no better replacement. If you guys don't like him, then go listen to somethin else.

@thewackyretard Are you kidding me? This album is no different than Boggy Depot or Degradation Trip. Except this time he got a "lead singer" and called the band Alice in Chains. But strangely enough, this lead singer doesn't seem to sing. It's just another Jerry Cantrell album but with a name that will sell a lot more records. And listen to the re-mixed version of What the Hell Have I that appeared on the box set. Cantrell's vox all of a sudden drown out Layne's.

@amorphis So what? Jerry Cantrell writes 99% of all of their shit. They're his songs, and he'll do what he sees fit. It isn't about who's the singing lead. It's the vocal harmonies and the music itself that makes an Alice in Chains song, an Alice in Chains song. It's the harmonies.

Take Her Out, Your Decision, Check Your Brain, Lesson Learned, When the Sun Rose Again, etc. I don't think there is one bad song on this album. They might have improved without Stayley, hate to say it.
