Well, In my opinion, I think he still has feelings for the girl, but things changed, and they aren't together. And I think he knows things won't be as they were before, so it's impossible to keep going as if things were still good between them. But I think he wants her to know that just because they aren't together still, he'll always be there for her, no matter what, and she'll never be alone, and I think he still does love her. But, that's just my understanding of the song, so I could be wrong
