  • I can't believe i missed viewing this video! This must be a relatively new posting. Thanks for posting this.

Lea is a real great singer and broadway actress.

  • lea salonga's voice has captured not just the ears but also the hearts of the panel and of the whole world. Lea's voice is simply perfect. From the moment that she sang the first note........ i think the people whos holding the audition already knew that they have already found the perfect person who will fit for the role. She's the greatest and the best Kim ever!!!

  • You can see how Lea's voice has matured when they finally staged their first show.. what a difference from her auditons... She got the perfect tone for the role. ;p

  • idol ko talaga to as in

  • What was with the shouting and swearing??

  • LOL that director nicolas hytner is really pissed off at 5:04 because schoenberg allowed lea to control him momentarily there..you can really tell that schoenberg adores lea

  • wow! there's some intense part, huh? :p Leah is the best Kim on Ms. Saigon! (for me) ;p

  • @shuyeye2 I agree, shes amazing !! :)

  • :O:O

    He swore at Claude!!

    GRR

  • @MariusFett O-O

  • oh! thanks! uhmmm.

    why is she with Lea?

sorry if i'm asking too many quesitons.

  • @17aishiteru

she also auditioned for miss saigon... she's one of the original miss saigon london cast...

  • oh! i see!

    thanks! Ü

  • Monique Wilson..

  • i think 16-17

  • 17 actually

  • her singing "movie in my mind" is so powerful. so dramatic. so pure and pristine. so much emotion. i LOVE it!

  • she has an Angel voice so soft...I like her...ONLY MISS SAIGON MS. LEA SALONGA...THANKS FOR SHARING FOR THIS VID...GOD BLESS!!!

  • did anyone else notice that at 5:12 someone swore then swore again..who was that...why??? I was confused by it... :)

  • @xEmmy07x How can you not notice - the rude director is shouting his head off!

  • goosebumps!!! her voice were just perfect..^^

  • perfect!

  • beautiful!

  • Ahhh...memories!! Great video!! :)

  • nice shirt....it is from the philippines...:)

  • what is the title of her second song?

  • the movie in my mind, still from miss saigon

  • @jhazzkulet19 i think it's "the movie in my mind" the character Gigi sings that part. i think Isay alvarez got that part when lea plays kim.

  • The movie in my mind... :) Oh she's so lucky...Kim is my dream role!!!

  • honey that's not "punk" that was the f word. You make the impact of the curse less 'scary.' Still, there is no excuse for being rude. We are in accord on that front.

  • it's amazing how she surfs the music sheets...

  • Kilig to the bones!

  • woah who was the angry dude

    shes amazing

  • :] so sweet.. nice!!!

  • :D so galing!

  • Hey Anne, how 's life. thought I'd share this with you just for the hell of it. it's quite moving and beautiful.

    Jules /Julian

  • wow! great voice i love it!

    ur pinay eh!

  • hay,,,,,, so sweeeetttt lea...

  • Her Voice Is Like An Angel :D

  • "the movie in my mind" WOW. she just captured the ones there for the audition as only Lea Salonga can. They cannot believe what they are hearing. Just very awesome.

  • lea...great...as always...(sigh)...

  • And, of course, Hytner brought us a great musical, but in retrospect.... Now we watch this documentary... Who do we remember? Lea Salonga as a great talent, and Hytner as one who always needs to command, but is an arrogant annoyance.

  • why did the guy start swearing??

  • It seemed it was a rather large audition In London, with a lot of people there to judge it. During the song, one guy jumped in to tell her how to do it differently. The guy swearing was telling him they are on a tight schedule, and it's not the time to be stopping the rehearsal so he can be her instructor. Then they all walk out. They must have finished it later, since she got the part. :)

  • Actually that was after she had gotten the part the director (Hytner) was upset because he thought there was no time to be wasting filming something for this "Making of" documentary

  • That seems to make more sense. Anyway, I'm so glad that she got the part. Needless to say, they did not bring it to the stage in Dallas, Texas, but I value the cd of it. Lea is awesome.

  • omg, Lea. You were so great in this. I know you always are, but this steals my heart. :$

  • I loved the song Too Much For One Heart. So sad it was not included in the repertoire.

  • her voice is so nice, tender (galing nya)what was she singing?

  • Sun and Moon from Miss Saigon

  • i can't believe that she is only 18!!!!

    so coolio!!!

    wat u think?

  • she was actually 17

  • wow she sounded really good at that age but what a huge difference a few years made. her voice developed so much more over the years.

  • Got a ticket to see her TONIGHT!!!!

  • I'm jealous. Lea is GREAT! :) my favorite.

  • WHEN did this audition happen? she looks so much younger.

  • Nov. of '88

  • Amazing Voice with vibration!!!

  • Ethereal Voice from heaven singing for us

  • very sweet voice!!!!

  • ironic how the guy playing the piano is wearing a phillipines shirt

    -her voice is soooo heavenly!

  • Not so ironic. This was the first audition for her in the pillipines. The next number is there also. Then she and one other girl are invited to London to continue the audition.

  • The other girl is Monique Wilson

  • im almost 35 now n i can honestly say no show has ever moved me so much as when i 1st saw this 1 all those yrs ago n i doubt i ever will b. thanx for posting :)

  • Gosh this clip has just brought back so many memories me. I was v.lucky 2 see Lea play this part when the show 1st opened, was the 1st "serious" musical i'd ever seen in the west end and she was just phenominal!!!! Was heart broken wen she died at the end! 2 old dears ended up giving me a kleenex lol!! i was only 13/14 at the time n never realised that something like a show could move me so much.

  • I pray that i heard her sing in front of me before my life ends..... => coz i don't want to miss an angel voice came from heaven to sing here on earth.

    Wonderful voice. MABUHAY ANG PINOY.

  • How old is she here?

  • she's 17

  • Check out Julia Abueva.

  • what happened at 5:12??

  • Comment removed

  • on the contrary she's fluent in English

  • Comment removed

  • With all due respect, Lea has always been fluent in speaking English since child and a lot of people in the Philippines even envied her for speaking so very well with the language .

  • true, she can really speak the English language well, and that is just one of the reasons why she got the role.

  • this is truly, simply, incredible.

  • how old was she in this video?

  • she was 17

  • She gave me chillss!

  • I am going to a live performence of Miss Saigon tonight. It`s shown OUTSIDE, should be amazing! Can`t wait!

  • were they yelling at her?

  • I think he was yelling at Claude on the piano.

  • I agree. I think it was Claude

  • wow!! that was great! so that's how that's done… what was the guy in the backgroumd cussing about? "we're not doing the f*ing film…can we please do this?"

  • What a dick? She was just trying to improve and follow what Claude was telling her!

  • he was angry at claude for filming a part for the documentary instead of practicing for the show

  • very lovely voice

  • omg, this gave me chills!!!!

  • Lea was in the original cast in 1990 in London so she was young then.

  • What's the name of this musical?God.For someone so young Lea is SPECTACULAR.

  • it's called Miss Saigon :) I want to see it so badly! And yes, she is absolutely incredible for her age, I want her voice so much

  • effortless....

  • what a voice!! i love it...

  • SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL. if i were a chick i would so want her voice.

  • She is AMAZING!

  • *indescribable*

  • she freakin' won a tony...so shut up haters

  • at 3:50 she is singing "i'd give my life for you"

  • that comment is in response to dinolopez86 by the way. :)

  • What song she is singing at 3:50?

  • im sure you've figured this out by now but its id give my life for you

  • thanks anyway!;)

  • one of the most beautiful voices ever

  • Genius.

  • What's the name of the second song she sings??

  • Comment removed

  • How old was she here?

  • she's 17

  • i think she was just 17 here

  • HOW OLD IS SHEEEEEEEEEEE?

  • AY..proudest moment para kay Lea!! of all the auditions that they've done...finally..si KIM ay nasa pinas lang!!

  • Lea Salonga is my inspiration. She has influenced me a lot.

  • She. Is. Beautiful.

I wish I could sing nearly as good as her.

  • what is this song?

  • sun and moon

  • from miss saigon.

sigh. i wish i had her clarity.

  • Too bad "Too Much For One heart" was cut from the show and the B'way cast album. I first heard it on her CD: "The Broadway Concert" from Manila. Beautiful song!

  • This video inspired me to be the best I can be when I saw this sometime in late '80s. Lea has been an inspiration. Thanks, Lea.

  • AZN PRIDE!

  • wow.

  • when they sing on stage is live?? or is it recorded

  • live

  • oh come on. this can't be a serious question!

  • whoa

  • what the hell happened at 5:12?!

  • Comment removed

  • Right, thanks for sharing.

  • I think shes a libra

  • does anybody know what she is? she sounds like an alto...or mezzo...blah..what do I know..does anybody know?

  • I'd call her a mezzo because she has the light, sweet quality of a soprano, but with an extensive lower range.

  • she is a soprano, definitly not alto. but she can definitly belt. its uhmazing.

  • She's a mezzo-soprano, which is not soprano as confusing as that sounds. Mezzo-sopranos can go fairly high but can still go quite low if able.

Sopranos are quite relaxed (depending on what type they are) singing up high and generally low notes aren't as comfortable.

  • She's a lyric soprano... according to herself, her singing teacher and me... and a mezzo wouldn't ever sound that good.

  • There are many types of sopranos, she's a lyric soprano, which means her voice can go low, bot not as low as a mezzo, but she can't go as high as other sopranos either; at least she calls herself a lyric soprano.

  • She sounds just like a princess in Disney movies. My mother was also a filipina, a pianist, trained opera vocalist. She died of cancer when I was 10. She had 5 kids. She also had that Disney/Broadway type voice because it was so angelic. It always lulled everyone to sleep and make people cry, including my dad! She was just a good mother. I hate watching animated Disney movies or musicals because there would always be someone singing with that type of voice and I instantly think of my mother.

  • she was the singing voice of mulan and jasmine from aladdin

  • Her voice made me teary....hair raising voice....

  • the pianist is one of the creator for Ms Saigon - Claude Michel Schonberg....he has the authority to allow it....

  • tnxs for compiling from d start 2 d end... nice job....

  • it's "movie in my mind" i think

  • Wait was a guy yelling at lea?? at 5:10?

  • No. I believe he's yelling at the pianist since he was responding.

  • Haha, I thought so. But it kinda seems like he's yelling at both of them.

  • he was yelling at the guy filming lea and the pianist. the pianist said he allowed it and didnt mind. but the guy got furious about it.

  • question po. anong titla po ng song na to? thanks po hehe

  • SUN and MOON

  • sun and moon

  • whoever was yelling in the middle is an asshole

  • Gee... i can't believe it's that stressful! Just listening to that guy "f&#@" a lot!

    I admire Lea...

  • Wha! What happened at 5:10?

    Did I miss anything?

And is this supposed to be a documentary or something?

I hope you can upload the rest of this vid if there's more.

    Thanks for posting.

  • most talented Filipino ever!!!

  • ok ok

    my baddddd.

let's all be happy little bunnies now and not fight over a minor mistake i made -.-

    thanks for correcting me though!

  • ur welcome :)

  • woah. PROUDLY PINOY! Lea, ur my hero!

  • no offense to charice but she's embarrassing me whenever she speaks with that malaysian-like accent haha! just sing charice. don't talk to oprah anymore. hehe! unlike lea salonga.

  • Yeah, i agree

  • Comment removed

  • baliw pala kau dalwa eh kitam nagaral sya ng english accent bcoz of her music yan tanga bakt may accent ka ba d mo lang un napapansin matigas ka rin magsalita hay pinoy discrimination

  • that is probably one of the most ignorant comments i've ever read.

shows how white-washed some of us Filipinos are. seriously.

  • Malaysian-like accent?

Just what exactly is a 'Malaysian-like' accent?

I know Charice has an 'accent', so to speak, but I don't think it's very nice to refer to it as 'Malaysian-like'.

I am not even Malaysian and yet I find this comment on their accent a bit offensive.

Don't take this the wrong way but I think it wouldn't hurt if we try to be a bit more sensitive about the things we say.

I am also Filipino by the way.

  • simply Amazing...!!!!

  • Brilliant! i love you Lea Salonga!!!!

  • ganda ni leah grabhe... still hot ngaun..

  • this is real singing!!!

  • she's brilliant!period

  • Makes me feel proud to be Filipino!

  • Me Too!!!

    Seriously!

  • lol...

  • haha this is the only time u see all four of them smiling at once. right after she sings sun and moon.

  • That director freaking out sounds a lot like a director I had in high school (except for the british accent)! He used to flip out and scream a bit and then hit us with "Practice that entrance 100 times and if it's late again we start from 1. Do it again!" He'd be all purple in the face and spitting but we always had quality productions (and NEVER a late entrance) :)

  • dear me - get a grip mate 5.50 stop yelling youll give yourself an ulcer.
