Oh dear. I saw gary when he was 15 at Leeds University England playing Billy Cobham material with his mate Steve Topping. It was like watching The Mahavishnu Orch. You may not know the Mahavishnu. Since then Gary now plays with John McLaughlin as his drummer and works with Billy Cobham as his keyboard player. I suspect that your knowledge of drums ends with Mr Bonham. He too, a good player, but sadly although a solid drummer, never in Gary's field. Sorry old chap.
@oidrummer60 ya know, this definitely ain't mr. husband's best work. look up 'holdsworth letters marque' and listen to the one with the red album cover. gary's playing is very inventive and his solo at 4:30 is killer
ive seen gary 3 times and chad 5 times you cant compare as they both have intricate styles i enjoyed this clip showing gary at his finest hour.. thanks guys..
I was there too. I expected Chad Wackerman on drums, but I certainly did't go home unsatifsfied. There was a man in the crowd yelling: Allan, why don't you alwas play with Gary? And Allan mumbled: He is a very busy man....
I was there and it was mind blowing!!!! The best Allan Holdsworth concert I've ever seen. Allan, Gary and Jimmy are the best trio you could wish for.
Gary's drumming was totally amazing and exciting. I've seen the best drummers in the world, but this guy just gets into your mind and gets you mesmerized, even hooked. Unlike I've ever seen. The crowd went bezerk.
This video doesn't do the real thing justice.
If you ever get the opportunity to see this trio live, grab it and don't let go!
Gary's using odd hardware configuration here- notice how the toms are suspended over the bass drum.

You're very welcome! I have to say/admit that this is the only clip I made that evening and I used my little panasonic DMC-FX50 photocamera.
It was really a great concert.
