@TheMrsVolfie I can say the same for Québécois winters! Middle of January freezing my ass off trying to make it inside the terminal from the rental car drop off at Pierre Elliot Trudeau LOL. not to mention the 5 feet of snow piled up on the curb.
First time I've seen your videos, and I find this one very interesting. I am sure the others will be equally as interesting. Thanks for taking the time to post them.
If you are John Campbell, the one doing the videos, I like the final touch on this video....a sticker for Ron Paul on back of your vehicle.
I've heard to dig down through the snow layer to the ground, and then use a pad that will keep you directly off the ground is the best way to camp in cold weather. Even building a cold weather shelter with snow packed on it is ideal. However cold in Alaska is a little colder. If you camp too high off the ground you're fighting cold on too many sides of your body. I'd love me a hammock in warm weather, but heck no in cold.
@0122358 I got this one at a local surplus store. The closest thing i have found to it since is the Fox Jungle Hammock. I have seen them online for as little as 50 bucks, less if you look harder....Me thinks me got screwed on mine lol.
My wife, asked me what about a bathroom... (She won't go camping with me so I never went over it with her...) I just thought that was cute, "does he have an emergency bathroom video?" I used to camp every weekend...
nice to see someone else who uses the jungle hammock. u can use it in any weather and its light, so its great.. another interesting way to use it is like a tent... just add a stick on each end to hold the roof up, the tie off your roof like a tarp... if its real cold, just lay some bedding and put the hammock on top.. it can be modified for almost any situation... the only problem with this is it can be tought on the back.. lol
I like the military extreme cold sleeping bags. They are around 80-90 dollars depending on where you look. The draw back is the fact that they are down filled. It is worth the extra money to get a gor-tex cover for them. You can also find those used for not too much money. i am a big fan of used military gear.
Well it is a little complicated. But to put it simply It is the sheath. The RAT sheath is good, but it doesn't seem to be as secure as the CRKT. I do understand the RAT is superior The sheath just seems to lack in the department of being held in place. I just know this knife is not going anywhere. What was your experience with CRKT? I have had good luck with it so far.
I had a CarsonF4 and a M16 Folder, both bought new and both failed me steelwise. I must add, here in Germany you pay the US Price in EUR +30-45%, so what you buy for 20$ is 30EUR here (if youre lucky, some retailers add 100%) . I dont mind spending money on a good knife (as for RAT or Leatherman), but for the CRKT pricetag I expect more than a made-in-china-knife.
No doubt, we tried making the Super Shelter video while a 55 Mile per hour wind was blowng through Camp Mud.. hopefully we'll have time to catch up on that one later!
John, where can I get one of those jungle hammocks? Been looking around and other than old vietnam issue N 1965, I don't see a comparable model. can you direct me? Thanks for the help.
Living in South Florida I often give little (if any) thought about cold weather gear. Your advice of keeping it in my car is a GREAT IDEA. I am going to pack up an old Jacket, couple of Flannels, a sweater or 2, and some sweat pants in a box in my trunk.
Great to see some cold weather stuff discussed. Up here in canada, camping in the fall means learning to deal with cold weather, sometimes with little warning. Fall is my favorite time to camp. With a little prep and know how - cooler weather can be some of the best camping out there.
HAHA I've used an extra rainfly I have as a makeshift shelter for about 2 years now-keep it clean and it lasts for a long time. Great vid dude keep em coming!
thanks John. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Knowledge is great, but in extreame cold weather situations...I typically lean towards more gear. I agree with you on multiple knives. I keep two solid knives on each of my modular kits, one belt knife and a neck knife is also on me at all times when out hunting / scouting. Two is one...one is none...we used to say that all the time in the army....It is a good rule to go by.
It can get pretty cold up in the higher altitudes. Right now at night is getting down around 40. As Winter progresses we can get temps below 17 and even lower up in Flagstaff.
Starting to get cold here in Prescott , Yes , The extra tent covers are thin , light , waterproof & easy to add to the ole backpack and are quite handy to have with you .
I have a huge rain fly from a big Kelty tent. Works great as a tarp shelter and it rolls up into a small, light package. Needs some more grommets along the edges though.
For your machete, if you want the saw back on it, just find someone who resharpens the old style saws. Most likely they can grind and set the teeth on there for you for a reasonable fee.
"a knife within reach at all times"--words to live by! I had one Buck Folding Hunter 3 years ago. Now I have 10 diferent knives!

@mrouterrim maybe because his back isn't on the ground.

slikshot6 2 years ago
@desertsurvivalist I would suggest the USGI ECWS MSS. They are good down to minus 30 and use modern polyester filling.
Vyppaaa11 1 year ago
@slikshot6 honestly the only thing i could recomend is the vango ultralight 200 or 300
they wiegh 800 grams and go down as cold as -11 celceus

@slikshot6 I live in MI and use a North Face Cats Meow -20 bag w/ hand warmers inside the bag. It work very well.

I like Flagstaff Arizona. 100 miles from Grand Canyon, give or take. Seeing a snow covered peek from the city is awesome.
Arizona Desert is something that I wish everyone could experience.
Nice vid Bro, keep them coming.

Hi John,
great vid again! I have just 2 comments:
Why CRKT (which I made very bad experience with) when you have a RAT?
And you "svedish mora knife" appears more to be a "finish fiskars knife" (the company who bought Gerber :)
Cheers,
me

If anyone was wondering. The sleeping mat looks like a Thermarest Ridge Rest.
I've been wondering about sleeping mats for hammock use. And I must say this video has convinced me.
I thought mats would be too rigid to contour to your body and the hammock.
Thanks
