People need to hear about more examples like this. Many people are afflicted by a form of cognitive bias called the just-world fallacy. To soothe their anxiety they invent the fantasy of a fair world where rewards go to the deserving and suffering goes to the undeserving. It makes them feel safe to think this happens, but it's pure wishful thinking. People are homeless because other people deny them access to the natural wealth of their own planet, when they have no special entitlement to it.

I had a 35 year career with no gaps whatsoever. I never even had to apply for jobs. Employers were always knocking on my door. Then two years ago I was laid off. One year ago I lost my home to foreclosure. Now I live in my truck down by the water in San Diego. I have been desperately searching for work since I got laid off but I run into the same problem as this gentleman: overqualified.
