Speaking of the chamois, I have used the cellophane from a cigarette package when my chamois is not around or just a piece of plastic from the supermarket bag. Those work well, too.
The next day when she came home from school she climbed up on my lap and ask to watch some more pottery videos so I loaded one up on the computer. When it started playing she looked at me and said " no I want to watch that one guy. Finally after going through the browser history I found your video. We have watched them all. More than once. Thanks for being so informitave in your videos.
My five year old daughter wanted to learn to make pottery. She is very artistic and am sure she will stick with it so I didnt waist money on a toy wheel. I purchased two old (real old) amaco wheels for us to learn on. We started watching videos on Youtube to get an idea of where to start. In the process we came across some of your videos. cont
Thanks for the videos Tim. Can I ask a really dumb question? I'm studying pottery in archaeology and would like to know what you think would be meant by a "profiled rim" as opposed to not profiled...? Thanks
@MrDaveymac08 I don't think this counts as a dumb question. I don't have a good answer. My best guess is that if cut in half the lip would be more than just truncated or rounded but more sculpted and with accentuation's that might correspond with decorations... thats my best guess.
Thanks, Tim. Great demo. I believe that Simon's rolled rims are not hollow, but rolled over in contact with the outside. They give the rim added strength as well as providing a more definite grasp.
Tim, Love your videos! I shared your techniques in class at College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City NC. your way of centering has really been great for them. Also we are doing small pots off the hump. your I Question.... when you use the rib of death how are you holding it. I have tried this several times and it has been death to the piece!!!!!!
I could try and do that times tight now before the show season. It should be held when throwing so only the edge is touching the pot if the surface touches drag increases and cal pull on the pot either ripping it from your hand or pulling the pot off center or apart. also if clay builds up and is not removed same thing can happen. I hope this can help in the mean time.
Tim, Great quick tips and techs, Thanks so much! Will have another name to add to list for my students, who can get on Utb. What wheel are you using, so quiet and smooth?
I'd like to see more of your posture, every once in awhile. Constantly Qing my ST on hand positions and posture. Thanks DebraRay
Hi Debra, The wheel is a soldner base that I have modified with a larger deck and a better belt and have done cleaning and kept the motor clean and squeeky free. I plan on doing a video with more views of the basivs in cntering and pulling walls. hope your students like them. Where do you teach
Simon did that a lot in the beginning as well. A different camera angle is helpful - maybe higher up and more in front of you. I put my camera on a stand and high up to the right and then zoom in. Head doesn't get in the way often.
Your videos are a great resource for us beginners. Please keep them coming!

Cool rolled lip. How fast a firing would be too fast at cone 5 for that rolled over lip?
ccollinsigcorg 2 years ago
well I fire at 15 hours without issue I do not go much faster than that with student work who know what they have done to their stuff.

Shammy - aka Chamois leather :-)
Not just liquid, but when you are spooning something out, it will tip onto the spoon at the top instead of flipping out of the bowl.
OMG!! That frilled lip is SO COOL!!!
More vids, please!!! These are just INSPIRATIONAL!
Oh - and would be good if you could bring the camera a tad closer to the stuff on the wheel and your hands.

Yeah I blew that this time filming and how about the head block when Im closing the hollow lip.
