The best Giconda nowadays sooooooooo far. I saw her singing this role in Covent Garden 2004 and she was TERRIFIC.

I like Urmana but I dont agree that she is a soprano vero, becouse her top notes are to slim..... and she sounds a little to harsh on top. For me she is one of the best FALCONS/SPINTO deep sided voices! BUT SHE IS A OPERA SOPRANO not all this boring sopranos in Munich who think they are spintosopranos. And V. Urmana is a good Liedersinger! GREAT!

I know. all these lyric sopranos think they can sing spinto and dramatic coloratura roles. what happened to all the REAL dramatic voices? they're around, but not very many.

@Heraopera She is a soprano... Her voice opens and blooms above the staff. that is the definition of a soprano... Lovely lovely voice.

It's quite perfect vocally...and a bit boring too, I don't know why. It is as if she was always in control, and as with the round voices, there is no tragedy in her colors. But that's a lesson of technique, truly.

I own this CD and Urmana is very good. When I first heard it, I couldn't believe that she began her career as a mezzo-soprano. Then I heard her as Azucena and, like other people, I have no idea which is better: Urmana the mezzo, or Urmana the soprano.

It's such a relief, to know that voices like this still exist, and that singers who are willing to temper and refine them with a good technique do too.

Honestly, a voice this big with this much elegance, and this beautiful... not since Nillson and Bumbry, surely.
