But even if a society has these things and classifies as a "civilization" that doesn't necessarily make them a great civilization. I'm not sure if the Mayans and Aztecs had a very well-developed written language though.

The movie industry can't make EVERYONE seem like a saint...besides the purpose of this movie isn't a history lesson. It's to entertain the audience in a classic case where the protagonist shows his determination to save his family and miraculously defies all odds. There's a LOT of symbolism here, which is why it is a great movie. If you complain about EVERY movie that makes good people/cultures/countries..etc "look bad" then I would not want to chill with you on movie nights ;D
