  • pffff. he's cheating. he practiced too much

  • @RespectDreamTheater Shawn said in an interview that he gave up proper practicing after the age of 17.

  • @Chaif15Let I don't know about that. When practicing the Indian/carnatic material he mastered towards the end of his career, he would only listen to and play in that style for about 3 years. Remarkable.

  • If a normal person tried playing this song it would be 3hrs long

  • @bountyhunter611 I actually played this for my final performance towards my degree :) Minus the 2nd part of improvised madness haha.

  • FML at the hybrid picking at 4:35 It blows my mind how someone can play that fast and hybrid pick along with it!!

  • Anybody have TABS of that last part? I can't even comprehend what's going on there. Absolutely insane playing.

  • Wonderful theme indeed. Unbelieveble melodies!

  • what the fuck is even going on at 4:30.... his picking technique is crazy. woah those are the craziest sounds ive ever heard come out of a guitar. and you thought petrucci could explode the sun lol.

  • this guy is an anomaly. I mean, he's like a guy who comes along and can pole vault 100 feet or run a seven second 100 meters. Guys, if you can't play as fast as him do not kill yourselves trying. My God!!

  • REALLY?

  • According to Barry Bays, one of the bassists who played with Shawn Lane, his fastest guitar playing was never recorded. And keep in mind how incredible he was on piano/keyboard as well, it's such a shame there's such a small amount of recordings of Shawn playing the keys.

  • Strangely, the pot of petunias thought 'oh no, not again'.

  • Alan "Slowhand" Holdworth

  • @Francologne Wasn't "Slowhand" Clapton's title? Pretty sure it was, in fact.

  • jaw floor drop

  • I'd say Shawn was the "Michael Jordan" of guitar, if Michael could fly like Superman.

  • @Gregorypeckory

Actually, I'd say Shawn Lane was the Michelangelo of the electric six string.

  • @Easleytee Okay, but not to be confused by the guitarist whose name sounds the same. ;) I guess we can agree that Shawn was pretty damn special. Maybe we should just say he was the Shawn Lane of the guitar-the highest complement, even if it is a little obvious!

  • *throws guitar out window*

  • seriously now, i gonna learn the first minutes of this song ( maybe in the end of the next year i'll finish the first frasier ) and pretend that i never saw the end, and i´m gonna play for my friends and they still gonna think that i'm a good guitar player, then i gonna show this video for them and wait to hear " YOU SUCK ".

  • 5:55 what was that ? o0

  • hes just impressive

  • He's a Monster!

  • ...man this guy had some serious chops, shame he died young

  • Oh. My. God.

  • @jhinson411 I have the solo music sheet if you can read music I think it comes with tabs as well let me know.

  • God Bless Shawn Lane!!! RIP Buddy you are still the best!!!

  • Some people would call this solo just "fast picking". It's more than that. It's a display of shear technical ability that very few guitarists or musicians of any instrument are capable of all throughout the documented history of music. Combine that skill with imagination & you have a genius. Shawn Lane was a GENIUS. And what rally sucks is that I never heard of him until 2 years ago, 7 years after he died. Some one should make a film documentary about Shawn's life. How about it???

  • Lick at 2:13 is so amazing, had to listen to it for 5 o 6 times :D

  • anybody got tab for that? ;)

  • his just picking very very fast....

  • At 5:11-5:17 and 6:39-6:44, what's the name of this technique? Is he using alternate picking or economy picking? Does anyone know?

  • que violencia de guitarra, queee rajado mae!!

  • I've gotta be honest, i'm not really into shawn lane's music (just because it's not my sorta thing) but that solo is one of my favourites (the one just before the drum solo)

  • Seriously just the best there ever was!

  • One of the few great tech guitarists to actually care about the music

  • Love that tone.

  • his hands just flows. gifted.

  • he can shred. he can play melodically. and also he sure can shred melodically. daaamn shawn lane is awesome

  • fantastic melody!

  • watching this i now know where buckethead gets a lot of his style from

  • I seriously wonder if he sold his soul.

    I hope not.

  • @TangerineGroovin that would EXPLAIN things ....

  • The most terrifying person in the entire universe

  • @asdfcrow Agreed. Greatest guitarist, one of the greatest pianists, a superb bassist and drummer by all accounts, a reading machine (read 80,000 books in his life), ambidextrous and with a near-perfect memory. He is quite literally godly and aspired me to a level of exceptional excellence in all my activities. A truly superb human being.

  • @Scratch47 So he took 40 years to read 80,000 books, but 6 minutes to play 80,000 notes

  • The ending is like scary fast. I listen to all the big shredders but only Lane has ever been able to intimidate me.

  • @danukenator123 I know what you mean man. I listen to Malmsteen and Becker on a regular basis, as well as playing them, but the first time I saw Shawn Lane play my mind was blown...

  • Take that, David Shankle!

  • I wish I heard the end in my head all day

  • thats seriously insane shit there at the end

  • if i begin now to play the guitar, after how many lives i will be able to play like that???? :P

  • he should of named the guitar solo at the end .....schizophrenia.....lol, thats what i think an insane person hears in his head all the time.........

  • how can anyone not like this - fiends :)

  • Comment removed

  • This guy is not human!!!!!

  • That shred improv was fucking unreal. Insanely fast and clean. Just mindblowing.

  • es una locura como toca este tipo

  • can't believe I've only just found about Shawn Lane, I've been playing guitar and reading all the mags since 86 ! he's amazing

  • Lane and Govan more like....think again!

  • @PrinceZappa Govan, Holdsworth, and Lane, is more like it. They are the three musketeers. The three greats. Haha.

  • Lane and Holdsworth...discussion ended.

  • @Easleytee Govan has to fill out an application to get in the club, holdsworth and lane ARE the club...............LOL

  • shawn lane is amazing

  • Can't listen to 4:52. I'm out of huggies.

  • The brightest lights always burn out the fastest. Legend.

  • Best musicians ever and greatest song ever created.

  • I won't say that i wasn't impressed with his abilities, and he can do a lot of techniques, but he should learn how to put more feeling on it, than he would be perfect

  • @Zhygun do you mean shawn lane? i think he plays with great feeling! you can hear the expressions in his benbing and you can see his facial expressons and in the way his whole body moves when he plays.

  • @Zhygun well look up his tune 'epilogue for lisa'. there's the clean studio version, and when he played it live he'd use overdrive a bit.

  • @ChiZ712 Yeah, you're right, liked it :)

  • after the drum solo .. my fucking mind ate itself

  • Comment removed

  • @Fotzkopp1980 It's not about speed, dude.

Shawn Lane wasn't amazing because he was fast.

He was amazing because he was smooth and fluid in his playing, and whether he played fast or slow, there was soul in his playing. He wasn't technical for the sake of it.

  • @Fotzkopp1980 hey verifiably isn't, just ask willjay.

  • The fastest player yet still damn melodic... Shame he's with no longer with the living. R.I.P Shawn Lane.

  • @DeathToNewbie coincidence that your comment is the 666th one?

  • la erdad que el gordo es una bestia

  • We'll never enter a Sam Ash and hear someone playing this.

Maybe Enter the Sandman incorrectly and Eruption butchered.

  • 2:52;258 !

  • Him, Allan Holdsworth, and Guthrie Govan are the three greatest guitarists that have ever lived.

  • @apophis135

Don't forget Jason Becker, he was very good!

  • @Morenumbers123456789 I haven't heard much by him but I'll check him out!

  • SONG STRUCTURE; Theme, Development, Chaos.....

  • 4:11 is the beginning of the sickest FACEMELT ever!

  • What would Hendrix think if he seen Shawn play that insane shred towards the end of the video?

  • I love that you can blame Allan Holdsworth for 4:14:) sooo awesome

  • I see it I hear it but I cant believe it.

  • sweet jesus...

  • After playing guitar for 12 years. Seeing this makes me want to give it up. And yet it makes me want to practice even more.

  • @kharnvelzyghur the section option definitely, this video inspires me to become a better player

  • the solo that starts at 4:15 sounds like WW3

  • Shawn Lane is the best guitarist in history

    RIP

More talented than any man...or god.

His mind blowing guitar playing defies the laws of physics, space and time on this earth. His god-like song writing ability make the music of all other humans look like the senseless jibberish of a retard that is near death from overdose of drugs and booze.

  • @TangerineGroovin Other way around bro

  • @TangerineGroovin

God is one of Shawn's creations*

  • Amazing Shawn Lane, always gonna miss you ~~

  • ele é bom pena que só faz barulho

  • Us and Them by Pink Floyd for a little bit there at the start

  • As a multi-instrumentalist, I wish the drummer would chill out... I can't concentrate. My poor face.

  • slash disliked this vid

  • a la verga jajajaj 4:52

  • Clearly the greatest electric guitarist to ever live, that was truly the most amazing electric guitar playing I have ever witnessed, Shawn was taken early, what a great tragedy, he is what Paco is to the Classical Guitar, Tommy Emmanuel is to finger picking, Val Lisitsa is to piano etc, a fuxing god dame genius, R.I.P Shawn Lane 'The Greatest One' 63-03, Lord of the Strings Master of The Art lol…

  • @YSBCITTAR Paco doesn't play classical he play flamenco. A better classical guitarist to pick would be David Russell. And Tommy Emmanuel? Please Lenny Breau was the true fingerstyle master.

  • @Sunderlanding True about Paco, but when he threw in some classical amongst his flamenco it was nuts, sure Lenny is the man but so is Tommy...

  • There's Shawn Lane, Alan Holdsworth...then the other zillion six-string practitioners.

  • Give it up for Sean Rickman the Drummer! DAMN!

  • @MaXaNoMaLoUs yeh that dude is awesome guess you have to be an expert to have played with shawn!

  • @MaXaNoMaLoUs THE RICK!!!!!!!

  • @MaXaNoMaLoUs talk about a human drum machine!

  • @MaXaNoMaLoUs Totally agree, some of the best drumming i've heard.

  • I just want to know what the heck he was thinking at that 4.34 onwards...that's some bizarre ideas there (i know it's some pattern here and there, but what was he thinking at that moment that need him to play like that.....because i know shawn can just play some more relax stuff or speeding all over the places or whatever he want to play at that spot)...and i still wonder if I can one day play in this kind of level...back to woodshedding i go.

  • Typical, a brilliant musician is wrested out our world yet again, damn!

  • DUDE SHAWN LANE IS THE GREATEST SHREDDER OF ALL TIME.

  • Definitely see some buckethead in this.

  • @bIoodypingu

Or maybe you see this in Buckethead?

  • we lost a great musician.... gonna miss him ...

  • the first half of the video he invokes god, the second half he invokes satan lol

  • I don't know what's more impressive... His right hand... or his left hand...

  • 2:16 love that groove. Well, love everything about this to be honest

  • The neck of that guitar is so wide. I bet it had a super flat radius.

  • I see absolutely no reason in playing my guitar ever again!

  • @testament214

no no no!!! This should make you WANT to play EVERYDAY!!!! :-)

  • @testament214 play it again bro!!!!!don't descend in depression;i think that the sense of depression that strikes the guitarist after seeing great talents playing is a typical "weakness"of guitarist.

    and it's not right!

play again your guitar!!she's waitng for you!

  • @testament214 bro, I've been playin' for 6 years, i'm 17, picked up the guitar when i was 11, I've wanted to quit a ton of times, but guess what? I've kept playing... because i love the guitar man, and like the great Jimi Hendrix said: "Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you'll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you're gonna be rewarded." that's what I LIVE by, that's what any guitarist should live by...

    keep Rockin!!!

  • when buckethead was writing The Interworld And The New Innocence he was definitely inspired by this

  • @JYZProductions His entire technique of fingernubbing even comes from a misunderstanding of a shawn lane bootleg that paul gilbert happened to have.

  • OK Gents---what the HELL is that guitar Shawn is playing??? I know it's the same Ibanez that Paul Gilbert had.I also remember the Ibanez ad with Traci Guns holding one...but I have never seen one of these in the flesh. What is it???please help!

  • @Guitfiddlejase

    It's a custom Ibanez Ghostrider.

  • @Fotzkopp1980 Ghostrider!!?? Thank you so much!

  • Shawn Lane=An awesome guitar player

  • Yngwie got NOTHING on this guy...he's the fastest guitarist I've ever heard!

  • Who is the one guy who disliked this? Your gonads belong in a blender, sir.

  • any body tab out the fast part?

  • MEMPHIS! invented rock n roll!

  • who's the one idiot who did not like this?!

  • This is how earthquakes get started people.

  • geeze i forgot to breath it was so intense no shit

  • I don't know why, but at one point I searched 'guitarist' into Wikipedia and there's a big picture with a ton of guitarists on it, at at the bottom right corner there's a picture of Shawn Lane which was pretty cool I guess.

  • So I bought my nephew a book called 100 of rocks best guitarist and to my disgust no Shawn Lane - The Edge was there Peter Framton Ted Nugent etc etc ,If Shawn got on stage with damn near any of those guys they leave the stage in utter humiliation.

  • @urheadonastick

I don't know if I'd call shawn lane rock necessarily, that coupled with his relative anonymity is more likely what kept him out of said book.

  • @urheadonastick Most lists I read in books and on websites are almost always awful, like in the Rolling Stone list of 100 best guitarists which never even mentioned Django, Shawn, Wes Mongomery and many others. I just don't look at any of these lists any more...

  • @MegaYoshitsune

Yea I know its disgraceful then to make things worse they will include some 3 chord playing no talent bum aww well such as it goes.

  • @MegaYoshitsune Yeah, but Shawn kinda did get recognition of a sort from the mainstream, when more famous people who saw him play like Billy Gibbons did, the most common response is they fell off their chair or something.

  • @urheadonastick

Shawn did actually have a duel on stage with Ted Nugent, in Nugent's home town, and Shawn rinsed him. Strange though I can't seem to find the quote of Shawn explaining that night..

  • @0ptriX Yea I heard about that ,the alpha male Ted Nugent was utterly blow of the stage ha ha.

  • @0ptriX He said, "Yeah, I just greased him."

  • the mofo is sick!

  • I do strongly suspect that this might be the inspiration to psycho exercises.

  • I NEVER get sick of this... Hell is Other People is my favorite improv solo by him but DAMN this is ridiculous! Around 6:40 his right hand blurs, I will never get over it.

After listening to this song in particular, I can catch most of the rhythmic grouping in "slower" players like Govan and Howe. If those three had a brain child... the world would end as we know it. Howe's got the Groove, Govan the tasty phrasing and Lane complete and utter freedom.

  • listening to the end makes me sweat lol cause that was hot!!!

  • don't even know how to quantify that much skill on an instrument.

    definitely my favorite shawn era.

and his drummer was equal to the task although his drum sound was miserably small.

  • I love 4:54 he played so fast the power hit a spike

  • I listen to that music and ask...."Hey! The alien said what?!" :) RIP Shawn Lane!!

  • If anyone's intrested, the legendary Captain Beefheart has passed away. I know this has nothing to do with Shawn Lane, but they're both geniuses who never got the fame they deserved.

  • 1 person is gonna die

  • He is much faster than Batio and Malmsteen............. I think, the only guy who comes close to Shawn Lane is the young Gary Moore. Listen to "Gary Moore - Live Guitar Solo (White Knuckles) - 23rd May 1983" and you will know what i mean........

  • @Fotzkopp1980 Not trying to be condescending, but what about Guthrie Govan? He's amazing and has played numerous pieces by Lane almost immaculately.

  • that solo gave me chills.its like being strafed with machinegun fire

  • da fuk

  • It's funny that this sounds like those Mock Petrucci psycho exercises

  • The whole other half isnt really part of Not Again on the studio version, hes just showing how you will never be that fast.

  • I think I just came.

  • 5:17 holy shit 0_0 faster than batio... faster than light! Shawn was on a diferent level.

  • my eyes my by messed up or did i see him hybrid pick one of the parts?!

  • @flipedup He hybrid picks lots in his music, fucking insane

  • someone had discovered finger teleportation o_0

  • it's a shame that you can't understand this music. It's totally full of feeling but some people won't get it and that's cool it's just that much better for those of us that do

  • Too bad he loved cheetos more than guitar

And fuck, it's almost too fast to listen to

And for as fast as it is, I like the slower parts at the beginning more. It's amazing as an exercise in technical prowess, but not that interesting to listen to

  • @KevinSaale Thats messed up man. He was overweight because he had to take steroids for the arthritis in his legs.

  • Too bad he loved cheetos more than guitar

And fuck, it's almost too fast to listen too

  • Too bad he loved cheetos more than guitar
