@Chaif15Let I don't know about that. When practicing the Indian/carnatic material he mastered towards the end of his career, he would only listen to and play in that style for about 3 years. Remarkable.
what the fuck is even going on at 4:30.... his picking technique is crazy. woah those are the craziest sounds ive ever heard come out of a guitar. and you thought petrucci could explode the sun lol.
this guy is an anomaly. I mean, he's like a guy who comes along and can pole vault 100 feet or run a seven second 100 meters. Guys, if you can't play as fast as him do not kill yourselves trying. My God!!
According to Barry Bays, one of the bassists who played with Shawn Lane, his fastest guitar playing was never recorded. And keep in mind how incredible he was on piano/keyboard as well, it's such a shame there's such a small amount of recordings of Shawn playing the keys.
@Easleytee Okay, but not to be confused by the guitarist whose name sounds the same. ;) I guess we can agree that Shawn was pretty damn special. Maybe we should just say he was the Shawn Lane of the guitar-the highest complement, even if it is a little obvious!
seriously now, i gonna learn the first minutes of this song ( maybe in the end of the next year i'll finish the first frasier ) and pretend that i never saw the end, and i´m gonna play for my friends and they still gonna think that i'm a good guitar player, then i gonna show this video for them and wait to hear " YOU SUCK ".
Some people would call this solo just "fast picking". It's more than that. It's a display of shear technical ability that very few guitarists or musicians of any instrument are capable of all throughout the documented history of music. Combine that skill with imagination & you have a genius. Shawn Lane was a GENIUS. And what rally sucks is that I never heard of him until 2 years ago, 7 years after he died. Some one should make a film documentary about Shawn's life. How about it???
I've gotta be honest, i'm not really into shawn lane's music (just because it's not my sorta thing) but that solo is one of my favourites (the one just before the drum solo)
@asdfcrow Agreed. Greatest guitarist, one of the greatest pianists, a superb bassist and drummer by all accounts, a reading machine (read 80,000 books in his life), ambidextrous and with a near-perfect memory. He is quite literally godly and aspired me to a level of exceptional excellence in all my activities. A truly superb human being.
@danukenator123 I know what you mean man. I listen to Malmsteen and Becker on a regular basis, as well as playing them, but the first time I saw Shawn Lane play my mind was blown...
@Crussman499 ok holdsworth, failed to acknowledge! having heard a few trax of his, he has a more introverted style than the other two i think. But zappa was a fan so he must be good. i'll have to dig out more then.
I won't say that i wasn't impressed with his abilities, and he can do a lot of techniques, but he should learn how to put more feeling on it, than he would be perfect
@Zhygun do you mean shawn lane? i think he plays with great feeling! you can hear the expressions in his benbing and you can see his facial expressons and in the way his whole body moves when he plays.
He was amazing because he was smooth and fluid in his playing, and whether he played fast or slow, there was soul in his playing. He wasn't technical for the sake of it.
His mind blowing guitar playing defies the laws of physics, space and time on this earth. His god-like song writing ability make the music of all other humans look like the senseless jibberish of a retard that is near death from overdose of drugs and booze.
Clearly the greatest electric guitarist to ever live, that was truly the most amazing electric guitar playing I have ever witnessed, Shawn was taken early, what a great tragedy, he is what Paco is to the Classical Guitar, Tommy Emmanuel is to finger picking, Val Lisitsa is to piano etc, a fuxing god dame genius, R.I.P Shawn Lane 'The Greatest One' 63-03, Lord of the Strings Master of The Art lol…
@YSBCITTAR Paco doesn't play classical he play flamenco. A better classical guitarist to pick would be David Russell. And Tommy Emmanuel? Please Lenny Breau was the true fingerstyle master.
I just want to know what the heck he was thinking at that 4.34 onwards...that's some bizarre ideas there (i know it's some pattern here and there, but what was he thinking at that moment that need him to play like that.....because i know shawn can just play some more relax stuff or speeding all over the places or whatever he want to play at that spot)...and i still wonder if I can one day play in this kind of level...back to woodshedding i go.
@testament214 play it again bro!!!!!don't descend in depression;i think that the sense of depression that strikes the guitarist after seeing great talents playing is a typical "weakness"of guitarist.
@testament214 bro, I've been playin' for 6 years, i'm 17, picked up the guitar when i was 11, I've wanted to quit a ton of times, but guess what? I've kept playing... because i love the guitar man, and like the great Jimi Hendrix said: "Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you'll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you're gonna be rewarded." that's what I LIVE by, that's what any guitarist should live by...

@MegaYoshitsune Yeah, but Shawn kinda did get recognition of a sort from the mainstream, when more famous people who saw him play like Billy Gibbons did, the most common response is they fell off their chair or something.
Shawn did actually have a duel on stage with Ted Nugent, in Nugent's home town, and Shawn rinsed him. Strange though I can't seem to find the quote of Shawn explaining that night..
I NEVER get sick of this... Hell is Other People is my favorite improv solo by him but DAMN this is ridiculous! Around 6:40 his right hand blurs, I will never get over it.
After listening to this song in particular, I can catch most of the rhythmic grouping in "slower" players like Govan and Howe. If those three had a brain child... the world would end as we know it. Howe's got the Groove, Govan the tasty phrasing and Lane complete and utter freedom.
If anyone's intrested, the legendary Captain Beefheart has passed away. I know this has nothing to do with Shawn Lane, but they're both geniuses who never got the fame they deserved.
He is much faster than Batio and Malmsteen............. I think, the only guy who comes close to Shawn Lane is the young Gary Moore. Listen to "Gary Moore - Live Guitar Solo (White Knuckles) - 23rd May 1983" and you will know what i mean........
it's a shame that you can't understand this music. It's totally full of feeling but some people won't get it and that's cool it's just that much better for those of us that do
And for as fast as it is, I like the slower parts at the beginning more. It's amazing as an exercise in technical prowess, but not that interesting to listen to
pffff. he's cheating. he practiced too much

He is much faster than Batio and Malmsteen............. I think, the only guy who comes close to Shawn Lane is the young Gary Moore. Listen to "Gary Moore - Live Guitar Solo (White Knuckles) - 23rd May 1983" and you will know what i mean........

@Fotzkopp1980 Not trying to be condescending, but what about Guthrie Govan? He's amazing and has played numerous pieces by Lane almost immaculately.

it's a shame that you can't understand this music. It's totally full of feeling but some people won't get it and that's cool it's just that much better for those of us that do

Too bad he loved cheetos more than guitar
And fuck, it's almost too fast to listen to
And for as fast as it is, I like the slower parts at the beginning more. It's amazing as an exercise in technical prowess, but not that interesting to listen to
