when you start the engine when its cold it goes through a warm up cycle, initially it keeps the revs at about 1000rpm till for the motor to have a chance to gather some heat in the bores then it brings the revs to just under 1500rpm, then when the motor gains temperature it reduces its rpm till returning to a idle at 8-900rpm . i have a silver one of these cars but with a 733i motor fitted :)
I talked to a mechanic, valve ticks are commen for this era of car, and yes the idle does slow down, usually to about 1000rpms, my friend bought the same car, it acted exactly the same.
Does the idle ever slow down? Or do you have to adjust it manually. If so, how do you do that? I'm looking at getting one of these babies in the next couple of days... if I can get it to slow down....

It needs a valve adjustment, you can do that in around 1,5 hours - no problem.
Check your vacuum hoses for leaks, could be the high idle problem :-)
