I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.
wonderful source. i have been to jean weiiii school in redwood city and i was kind of appalled by its attitude toward the deaf community. i am sharing your vlog on facebook. thank you
It is unfortunately for those who are ignorant about ASL. ASL is our first/primary language. Actually, Deaf people are strongly in bilingual/bicultural than most hearing people. We know what we talked about bilingual/bicutlure while the people who favors in this bill do not know what bilingual/bicultural actual means. We need to educate them. Unfortunately, people are ignorant about us and believe we are worthless even though God created us beautiful.
I did my homework and it's an opportunity for ASL communities to promote their goods to the parents. it's a free advertising and a little cost to send off brochures and packet to these parents. What can it go wrong with that?
@dominicerrigo dear, nope you didn't do you homework, it's pretty evident. And it would be nice to do away your patronizing of us and our decision to oppose this bad bill.
@ASLElla Ella, I did my homework and I always do before I say any further. It's a clean bill and it opens the door to Fremont and Riverside School for the Deaf plus ASL classes in the State of California. Arizona has one and it works wonderful...most parents goes to ASDB as a first ticket once they discovered their child is deaf. We have monthly parent meetings at ASDB. Hands and Voices organization started the bill and many parents don't feel lost when receiving information from the hospital.
@dominicerrigo With what said, your homework if it's actually done, must be done by someone else because what you yourself say is opinionated, superficial and nothing significant. Please see Barb Digi's vlog/blog posted tonight. Yes that's for extra credit. You need it.
@dominicerrigo oh but she is right, it does opens the door to Fremont and Riverside..... after Oral-only fail. The only sad thing about it is that these schools are treated as a last resort for the deaf people. I'm sure they know very little ASL and it does affect the whole school. It's kinda like NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND and how it affect people who are more advanced than average students. They hold them back because other students need to keep up.
@ASLElla When my son was born and screened with hearing test by our choice, we got the information packet that gives entire unbiased resources.Go look up at Hands and Voices website and you'll see everything in there that parents need to know. They deserve to know everything.AB 2072 is doing the exactly same as what Arizonians has.
This cannot go wrong, but if you feel that JUST ONLY ASL as an option, then you're mistaken. Being deaf has different levels of Deaf...watch SAGE's Vlog if I were you.
Please go research the Children Legal Advocacy through AGBell and find info about cases in CA where they help parents SUE public school districts just because they use signs/ASL in the children's PUBLIC education so they can bleed the district by making them PAY for the children's PRIVATE ORAL education, leaving less money for kids in public school & incapable of getting FULL possible education of their MINDS via ASL.
@gamaswanderings here's part of Sheri Farinha's message. She's the lead person for the opposition to AB2072. "Why are those groups doing this when CA is already giving parents info? From original bill & 2 amendments, they wanted the early education centers to be whom works with the new parents. Want transparency? The ONLY early educational ctrs in CA are oral only. There's no ASL early educational ctrs. They want their ctrs in the law. The pretense of "options" is not evenly balanced. Ck it out."
@ASLElla Why isn't there an ASL early educational center? if one was set up, it would fall under that bill in "all other communication options" that is now amended to show five specified options (in my opinion need to be amended again to show that it is not limited to these five). You're telling me there is no program for ASL in place within the early start program? You clearly stated ASL first, finish fluent, then add other options. Is that correct?
@gamaswanderings They do have early intervention infant programs in Fremont School for the deaf starting the age of 18 months old. I have posted my vlog and rebutted Ella's vlog.
@gamaswanderings,I thought you smart than me! Look at Deaf Education early years since the Milan1880 boom like TNT explosion attack ASL for starving Deaf children for many yrs. CI corps earn more money to sponsor more ORAL then spread like disease brainwash to parents choice. Parents choice become lazy communication if their Deaf kids do not benefit oral only. Why ASL always be the LAST option if too late back up! I agreed with DonG but you bomb TNT that you more Deaf Culturally than DonG!
@gamaswanderings My response -- I don't get it that you expect me to be transparent with this? Why not simply demand transparency from those groups? Go check them out as I suggested. They are ones that stand to profit immensely from this at the expense of Deaf community, ASL, and the Deaf babies AND their parents. Read Harlan Lane's book "Mask of Benevolence" if you haven't done yet.
@ASLElla What do you have to say about parents who claim that CDE and CA Health Services have bullied families and professionals when it comes to choice? Choice in allowing them to be informed of all options (ASL and what-nots) and to allow them to make the final decision? Ella, I did read that book, in fact I do have it on my book shelf. I'm very well versed in deaf culturel. You still have not explained WHY these people/group support this bill. That kind of transparency.
@ASLElla Ella...Audiologist don't make much money on deaf kids like us. You keep on assuming things that doesn't support your case. Audiologist predominately makes money off of old age groups and we as a deaf people makes up only 5% of their yearly revenue.
@gamaswanderings I saw what you said to DrDonG about being culturally deaf and with that embarrassingly divisive and elitist remark, I see no reason to try and reason with you. You are set in your thinking, stuck in same old same old patterns which have been destructive and audist for Deaf people, have no foundations of truth, and not liberating at all. How you can live with that thinking, I find quite incomprehensible for any so-called intelligent human being.
I saw that too. As a deaf who grew up without ASL, I wonder if this person even know what it is like to have a language barrier? This person is lucky, and if he/she was in my shoe, he/she wouldn't handle it. He is lucky enough she have a healthy interaction with his family. I think this person's family should just stop signing to him, and start speaking since he doesn't value ASL as important as cochlear implant. Then he'll know.
Oh Ella! I decided to check out those who came to Tony and made that bill. It is very upsetting for me to see their mission, the way they think is better that or this way and so forth.
As I maintained and still do, we suggest that ASL is priority to be presented. Agree with Nikki and others who suggested that ASL is highly recommended because we all know what would happen if we make ASL as only option. Thank you for sharing with those who introduced and established bill 2072.
First of all, ASLElla, thank you sooOOO MUCH for checking out who sponsor that AB2072 before we waste our time to watch some "Confidence Level" and "AB2072 is opportunity". They are not worth to watch! Yes very important for us all to check out who sponsor the bill in first place before we jump in conclusion too far! hahaha
If B.S. speaks in favour of AB2072, he should not use ASL for communication. How can he communicate with the deaf people? & Why does he still use ASL?
Loved your yapping dog analogy! My girl attended CCHAT for their summer school program. We also visited JWPOSD and participated in their activities. Granted, there are some kids doing satisfactorily, but there are several kids who are struggling. My girl, a bilingual user of ASL and spoken English was told by an audie that she has more language than any of the oral kids at CCHAT. I can assert that the group of TODs, SLPS and audies at the schools are quite stuck up. cont....
Now, back to the point of your video....my hunch was right about who was behind the bill...of course ASL will be considered as the LAST choice. Why? Parents want their children to be "normal" and they see ASL as a last resort and more appropriate for the multi-handicapped. We MUST fight tooth and nail to see that ASL is written as "strongly encouraged" from the get go and the options can follow. No Deaf Child Left Behind: ASL as the recommended first choice!
@shelpotma1 ...oh, that! I was starting to wonder where did I pick this myth up....and was questioning my state of mind. WHEW. Now we must dispel the myth quickly.
@aslnikki Absolutely. It was interesting also how they defended the rights of Hearing parents, but said nothing about the wishes of Deaf parents being overridden, on top of perpetuating the ASL only myth.
@shelpotma1 exactly! and I have stories of HEARING parents having to battle IEPs just to have ASL instruction be set for their Deaf children! There's this recent case in Florida too. This battle even goes on at some residential schools for the Deaf! I was at a big ASL using Deaf school recently where I learned that it's a policy that ASL signs, pictures, information are not allowed on the walls--only English words and information, period. Couldn't believe that!! Can you?
@aslnikki , ASLElla did her GOOD JOB to protect ASL !!! Nikki , have you been experience of touching the POWERFUL ORAL SOIL before? I used to hate ASL before! We do not want that again! ASLElla is very smart to protect ASL ! Oral is still playing TRICK games! Look at RID President, she has a Deaf brother from AZ !!! Oh my god, AZ must be hiding something to oppress ASL all over again!!!!???
@PopeMistress .. Me? Never oral. My child, yes, but ASL is her first/primary language. She participated in oral summer camps, etc. One day I will share stories of what I have seen from being an insider.
@aslnikki Exactly.....I agree with that one. Usually the parents would go for ASL as the VERY LAST resort when anything else fails, hence they'd have some regrets and would probably say they fail as the parents. Well, it's not the parents' fault. It's all from "so called experts".
I belive those who support the bill think that speech and listening (auditory) skills are part of language which is not true. It is good to see majority of people in our community and other states oppose this bill. We have pretty good numbers so I hope Aseemblymen will listen to us.
@MeDeafYes you are right. Language is in the BRAIN, not the ear/mouth only. This is the ideology that needs to be shattered so that ALL people (yes hearing people too) can become more human and wiser.
Wow! Tony Mendoza's office is only 2 mins drive from my home. He should have looked into contacting Deaf constituents who live nearby. I am gonna kick his ass!

@LChaim2007 audism is prevalant, especially in EHDI. That is definitely NOT healthy for Deaf babies and their families. It's our moral duty to point that out and shift the thinking to one that sees Deaf culture, Sign Language, Deaf people are people to be respected as a fully human group and with so much potential gifts to give to the world in general as well as to future Deaf children.
