He should just move on more without Republican support. At least on some issues like health care where he isn't going to get much support from the right.
If the buck stops with Obama (the spend thrift man) does this mean he will PERSONALLY pay back the deficit - out of his own personal retirement savings - when his change does not work ?
He better be careful about "bringing the heat," because if he starts pounding the fist too hard he could start to look like a bully. Americans elections are popularity contests driven by personality, and bullies are never popular.
Bush used the same tactics, its called party politics not rope-a-dope, you draw lines in the sand and you blame those on the other side for the problem and you divide a government. Obama is doing the same thing, he is not a 'uniter' like he was portrayed, he's a dirty politician like the rest and you have already heard stuff like "The Republicans did XYZ, I knew they would do XYZ, I offered to help with XY but they refuse to budge on Z" it's a formula played out for decades, no 'change' yet.
so sick of hearing about obama and im not even american. It makes me sick who cares hes just like every other president promising things that wont come true. And who cares if hes black? hes just another man. god damn

he's nothing like bush. we need big gov't now. bush was in favor of "small gov't", meaning he could do whatever he wanted w/o any input, and he did everything behind ppl's backs.
i love how ppl call a self-made inspiration like obama elitist, because he eats dijon on a hamburger, and then they pretend that bush is some rugged cowboy from heartland texas. he had a fucking silver spoon in his mouth his whole life. he whined his way to the presidency.
Taxes are a necessary evil. That said, I think it would be a good idea to opt out of having welfare taxes deducted from your check, at the cost of you being denied the opportunity to receive welfare yourself. If you choose not to give, then you cannot take. Sounds fair to me.
But the problem with this line of reasoning is this. WHO isn't going to pay their welfare money? The rich? The middle class? No, they can afford this, but it's the poor who will be left out. If buying food and a roof over your head is a problem to you, you're not gone spend money on something that 'might' happen. 'Free choice' to chip in always leaves the poor behind.
It did not matter if Gregg swatted the hand or not. Obama can now claim he made the gesture and the republicans spit in America's face. If Gregg had accepted the post he would be isolated from his party and viewed either as a turncoat republican helping Obama or he would get burned by the public for not being a team player for Obama. But it might be worse for Republicans now since republicans publicly state they hope Obama fails. If he does he can blame it all on the Senate. Lets try libertarian

It's time we stop making up stupid theories to excuse Obama.
He seems like he cares by doing things that don't matter a lot to the people. Like answering a question of a homeless person. When it comes to the economy he is f*cking people over in favor of big companies and then naive people like us make up stupid theories to excuse him.
Okay fine, he's in the corporations' pockets. In other words, he is an American politician.
That doesn't say what kind of a President he will be, and it doesn't say whether he is going to let the Republicans define him, or whether he will end up defining them.
Well, I think that may very well be true to some degree.
But he does have a not-so-bad stimulus package, that's close to the original. He passed a law that gives a bit more power to unions. He signed the closing of Guantanamo.
So, he more than deserves the benefit of the doubt so far. As to the rope-a-dope... Cenk is indulging, like most pundits, in overanalysis. It may be this simple: he reached for Republican cooperation - they refused to play ball; he found some other way to pass the bill.
How is he the master of that? It's true his claims of being bipartisan were exaggerated, but on many other issues (Guantanamo, foreign policy, swift action) he's held his word. I'm not so naive as to think he's a saint, but I also don't see the "evil master off puppets" side that you seem to envision.
You serious? Seriously? Gitmo closed without a fucking clue of what to do with the terrorists. Foreign policy? What the fuck has he done there? Nothing. 1) LOL. Most of them are terrorists. Do you have a list of all the detainees?
2) No, they think it will fail because it is just a reward to liberals with no particular purpose. They say it doesn't do what has proven effective: cut taxes across the board.
3) You can nationalize the banks, corporations, etc.
ObamaWatch1212: You have no idea what you're talking about. Econ 101: Tax cuts can be stimulative, but not nearly as stimulative as spending. Tax cuts have a smaller multiplier. Retard: I never said Obama is doing a good job. I'm just saying the "false promises" argument is false because he followed through on a lot of things he said, for good or worse.
That's very true, but I wouldn't try argueing that on this vid, all hard core liberals here that are high on pot 24/7. I'm personally not a fan of Obama's ideas, and he's not much better than a mass murder when it comes to abortion. Most people that support Obama don't even know why they support him, he's just a celebrity with little experience.
Go Obama!! The guy is so smart. If thats true then we finally elected a smart guy who can put a sentence together and lay the smackdown on these candy asses the republicans! we already know the republicans are stupid and out of control. This proves they are only looking after their party. Obama should turn on the heat and destroy them!
Aren't you a good little liberal? You just keep watching CNN and MSNBC and drinking their Cool Aid while living off your welfare check from the Government. Oh, and don't forget to oppose those evil troops that are fighting their asses off for you so that you can live free.
Aren't you a bad little conservative? You go and bash the new president who is keeping you safe only a month into the presidency, but when bush was in office you drank his Cool Aid, while living off your stupid worthless tax cuts that favor the rich. Conservative Republicans make me sick to my stomach!
I oppose the war, that doesn't mean that I oppose our troops. I appreciate every man and woman who is at the war, I just don't approve of the war. Approving of welfare and food stamps doesn't mean we live on them either.
Oh, that theory true or not is really meaningless, since the republicans obviously would just kep lying so. You can't make someone who is faceless to lose his face.
I like it, and Rope-A-Dope is a great analogy, let the Reppigs fire all they have and wait till their punches get exposed and lose most of their effectiveness.
great strategy, I hope it's gonna work this time too
After watching Obama for the last few years and seeing how all the decisions he makes usually play out... I dont think he planned for the Republicans to paint themselves this way, but I'm sure he's aware of how they are viewed.
With that being said, I dont think he will use this as a means of attack unless the Stimulus plan is successful. If it does work out and the economy starts heading in the right directions, Obama will kill the R party. Especially when it comes to re-election time.
sadly, on the day after he reported this, he (CENK) reported that he did indeed think he could have been by partisan and he had no plan of attacking or going after republicans in anyway. Obama isn't a makavalian mastermind, don't know is that's spelled right but who cares. So no, no rope a dope, just a dope for hope. hehe I made a funny.

Cenk every clip you have is on a "micro-level" you over analyize news and create your own from it. It's exactly why you won't make MSNBC. Even if you did people know it's garbage. Like I have said before, you are "more of the same" in media. People want real change Cenk.
Republicans have a reputation for being so aggressive, also to a point of racism.
At the end of the day it's what the people see, not the ones who have opinions on politics but the ones who see black and white and not the gray areas.
Nah. President Obama is super intelligent BUT at the same time super civil.
Could be that he might be gullible, naive or just a sucker.
Either way he's a good dude and sooner or later he'll realize that the majority of Republicans do not and will not... ever... support his ideas because they conflict with their own, failed, overused policies.
Let's get on the ball Barack! Reach out but not to pirahanas.
For you that left me an e-mail..... If you think you can run this Country better than quit bitching... And get your ASS out there and see if you can fix Bush and Cheney fucked up for 8 years.... I bet you couldn't do it... But if you can give it a try and run for President of the United States.... If not then SHUT UP...... Thank you that's all I have to say about my e-mails....
wow i hadn't really thought of that but yeah that does seem to be his strategy it's brilliant and he always does it in such a good natured way too. usually you watch a politician long enough you see the same strategy pop up this one is so subtle though it'll be a while before folks figure it out. especially since his opponents are such one trick ponies. i.e. just fling the mud til something sticks
He's really just doing the right thing while letting republicans be themselves. If it makes them look foolish then it's because they are. There's no genius behind it.
I don't think he knew what their reaction would be but he played it in a way that was win-win for him. By extending his hand first they had to either accept his proposals or look uncooperative, partisan, maybe even unpatriotic. Well played.
I don't doubt his intellect. I just have more esteem for his sincerity than you seem to Cenk. lol I think he really wanted to make this work but he might have gotten a little too confident and forgot that he's dealing with snake oil salesmen that have been at this game for as long as he's been alive in some cases. It's going to take some time. I know he wont's stop reaching out but I hope he pulls back on the throttle a bit.
alright. we have a damn good president. it's so good to say that.
and funny story here: i recently bought a strain of weed that was really good shit from a friend and when i asked what it was called he said the people who grew it called it Obama.
i think it really shows the level of all around approval Obama has won. it's a sign of the Obama time in American history. ecstatic enthusiasm for one of the most charismatic presidents of all time.
It's pretty clear the GOP has found themselves a safe 'no lose' bunker to take shelter in. They can't defeat Obama's policies, so they sit back & criticize whatever the Dems do
If Dems actions are proven successful, GOP claim that if the Dems had listened to them it would have been MORE successful. If it fails, they just sit back & point fingers. If it has a moderate stabilizing effect which is unprovable (can't prove it would have been worse without their action) they claim it did nothing
B. When did I say this is not politics as usual. That WAS the point; the GOP has found a bomb shelter to ride out this mess so don't expect ANYTHING from them. They're largely responsible for this mess & are hiding in their 'no blame' shelter until the next election. Both sides are politicians & will behave as such
"All they do is point fingers"
Here you seem to imply only 1 side is guilty of this...perhaps you need to investigate 'hypocrisy'
Changing the stimulus package to please Republicans in order to reach out to them, knowing they would just backlash anyway, as a "smart political move"... shame on him if that was his plan, I sure hope not. This very expensive bill was supposed to be important in helping our economy, and Obama is supposed to be "post-partisan" and just doing "what works". If he's playing games with the other side now to beat them in the long run, he shouldn't be doing it on a trillion dollar stage.
"If he's playing games with the other side now to beat them in the long run, he shouldn't be doing it on a trillion dollar stage. "
Agreed. if he is, AND it works then maybe hes the greatest president in a mighty long time - perhaps ever. Imagine FDR dealing with this kind of depression or the other Roosevelt going toe to toe with "terrorism" ? If Obama knew & suceeds -hes doing the equivalent of a 1 handed INT return 100 yds for a TD in the SB with NO cleats-twice for the win.
Shit, Teddy Roosevelt would have killed ten terrorists himself. But really, I think Obama will help curb the damage of the recession to some degree. I'm sure he'll do better than Bush with the terrorism aspect too.
Part of the war on terror is that hate breeds violence, and the world had a terrible image of us thanks to the cokehead Texan vigilante. I think Obama will help reduce the hate in a big way but I don't think he alone can solve such a complex problem.
The President kept his word to try and change the tone in Washington. He trusted that the American people would recognize that. I don't know if a little gamesmanship was involved. If it was, it certainly was justified. The Republican Party is incredibly predictable. Picking Michael Steele after picking Sarah Palin just makes them look like they are making a superficial attempt to replicate the Democrats broad based appeal. P. Obama is gifted person, who happens to be part African American.
He may have guessed by knowing these people and working with them before hand, what kind of level of support he would or would not get from them. I think these people have failed themselves because they don't trust Obama's sincerity in his words. He's idealistic and actually believes in the founding principles of the country. I think that people are so jaded now, that they can't believe someone like him is really genuine. He can use this to his favor, no doubt.
well, Cenk, that is what many of us(I know I was) were telling you ALL ALONG!!! I will admit, I'm not as sure now, but I kept saying over and over that he is trying to show the public that he's trying with the Repubs, so that later on when he pushes his own agenda, he can say "see, I tried and they didn't cooperate". So, a little slow there, Cenk, you were a little slow.
Well here's the thing Cenk, even if Obama did not intentionally plan these things out, he is now given a very nice hand and he can play it very confidently. There has been enough media coverage of the bipartisanship to immunize Obama of any further bipartisan criticisms, so now he can use his popularity to pass some sweeping bills.
No one will ever know what Obama is doing until it happens.... I believe in Obama and that he will try his best and get this Country back in to shape but only time will tell... GO OBAMA!!!!

haha. Replace the name Obama with the name Bush in your little praisefest and what do you have??? A good ol' boy bush supporter 7 years ago at the start of the Iraq occupation. O Bahhh Ma.
that doesn't make sense for a few reasons. the most glaring is the fact that obama won his election fair & square. also, obama's dad didn't buy his way into an ivy league college. bush never wrote the harvard law review either. bush had everything handed to him. not only that, no one ever made the mistake of accusing bush of being smart.

Aren't you a good little liberal? You just keep watching CNN and MSNBC and drinking their Cool Aid while living off your welfare check from the Government. Oh, and don't forget to oppose those evil troops that are fighting their asses off for you so that you can live free.
Yes, go Obama....(sarcasm)
aerofan14 3 years ago
Aren't you a bad little conservative? You go and bash the new president who is keeping you safe only a month into the presidency, but when bush was in office you drank his Cool Aid, while living off your stupid worthless tax cuts that favor the rich. Conservative Republicans make me sick to my stomach!
Smackdown5 3 years ago
I oppose the war, that doesn't mean that I oppose our troops. I appreciate every man and woman who is at the war, I just don't approve of the war. Approving of welfare and food stamps doesn't mean we live on them either.

Oh, that theory true or not is really meaningless, since the republicans obviously would just kep lying so. You can't make someone who is faceless to lose his face.

I like it, and Rope-A-Dope is a great analogy, let the Reppigs fire all they have and wait till their punches get exposed and lose most of their effectiveness.

Especially when it comes to re-election time.
redimere 3 years ago 2
sadly, on the day after he reported this, he (CENK) reported that he did indeed think he could have been by partisan and he had no plan of attacking or going after republicans in anyway.

Good Theory
Republicans have a reputation for being so aggressive, also to a point of racism.
At the end of the day it's what the people see, not the ones who have opinions on politics but the ones who see black and white and not the gray areas.
Cheers Cenk

Thank you that's all I have to say about my e-mails....
xenafan33 3 years ago
wow i hadn't really thought of that but yeah that does seem to be his strategy it's brilliant and he always does it in such a good natured way too. usually you watch a politician long enough you see the same strategy pop up this one is so subtle though it'll be a while before folks figure it out. especially since his opponents are such one trick ponies. i.e. just fling the mud til something sticks
doorki42 3 years ago
He's really just doing the right thing while letting republicans be themselves. If it makes them look foolish then it's because they are. There's no genius behind it.
brianguy1212 3 years ago
I don't think he knew what their reaction would be but he played it in a way that was win-win for him. By extending his hand first they had to either accept his proposals or look uncooperative, partisan, maybe even unpatriotic. Well played.
megamarsvin 3 years ago

Hopeful71 3 years ago 4
AND YOUR TALKING????
Have you seen the Democrats??? All they do is point fingers and blame the Republicans when their policies fail and get us into even more trouble..
The Hypocrisy of Democrats...America needs a serious moral cleansing...
aerofan14 3 years ago
"AND YOUR TALKING????"
A. I am not a Dem

If he's playing games with the other side now to beat them in the long run, he shouldn't be doing it on a trillion dollar stage.
kreskinkun 3 years ago 3

I think Obama will help reduce the hate in a big way but I don't think he alone can solve such a complex problem.
kreskinkun 3 years ago
"Shit, Teddy Roosevelt would have killed ten terrorists himself..."
Hehe yeah, and they'd have brought him home in a pine box, and whoever was his Vice President, that would have been our President.
Agreed on the World Image part, yes. Obama's got to define himself AGAINST BUSH, which he's done very well so far.
Wendy62 3 years ago
The President kept his word to try and change the tone in Washington. He trusted that the American people would recognize that. I don't know if a little gamesmanship was involved. If it was, it certainly was justified. The Republican Party is incredibly predictable. Picking Michael Steele after picking Sarah Palin just makes them look like they are making a superficial attempt to replicate the Democrats broad based appeal. P. Obama is gifted person, who happens to be part African American.

I can only hope he's that smart.
mynameisdylanholcomb 3 years ago
He may have guessed by knowing these people and working with them before hand, what kind of level of support he would or would not get from them. I think these people have failed themselves because they don't trust Obama's sincerity in his words. He's idealistic and actually believes in the founding principles of the country. I think that people are so jaded now, that they can't believe someone like him is really genuine. He can use this to his favor, no doubt.
Thebeautiful11 3 years ago 4
well, Cenk, that is what many of us(I know I was) were telling you ALL ALONG!!!

As bad as it is to play politics in a situation like this, I think Obama may be doing it in order to push his agenda harder.
Which I'm all for.

haha. Replace the name Obama with the name Bush in your little praisefest and what do you have??? A good ol' boy bush supporter 7 years ago at the start of the Iraq occupation. O Bahhh Ma.
Joeweed68 3 years ago
that doesn't make sense for a few reasons. the most glaring is the fact that obama won his election fair & square. also, obama's dad didn't buy his way into an ivy league college. bush never wrote the harvard law review either. bush had everything handed to him. not only that, no one ever made the mistake of accusing bush of being smart.
