  • Hi Nurd :3

  • Informative. Thanks!

  • anyone else think that looked like cocaine???

  • What does the silver chloride turn into when the light strikes it? I read that silver bromide goes from yellow to purple when light hits it. I'm fascinated by all this but I really want to know what the light actually does to these silver salts.

  • @JibbyDee my guess is that the light punches the atoms, knocking off electrons which causes a chemical reaction with.. well here ends my thought.. I guess oxygen

  • You can tell he's Canadian because he said: "eh"....why do people post shit like that? I do say "eh" all that much, eh.

  • this is also how transitions corrective lenses work

  • SCIENCE!

  • And my classmates think science is boring. Well hey will be burning in hell.

  • Isn't it what they used in the 2nd World War, in the bunkers, if the light should dissapear?

  • @NurdRage Why not soak the filter at first with AgNO3 and then after drying apply NaCl solution? I guess, then the Ag- ions should be incorporated in the paper, right?

  • i hate ads

  • Would the experiment work with CuCl2, AgI, AuCl2, LiCl, or any other halide? :P

  • @sambrulz yes all of the above, not sure about fluoride or bromide though.

  • Is table salt KCl or NaCl?

  • @Knalhummer NaCl. but KCl will works also

  • CANADIAN MACGYVER

  • does CuCl work as well and if so plaese show how to make CuCl.thanks.

  • @melnadiacillian

I don't think it will work with copper chloride. only silver halides have this photochemical effect.

  • t-his guy is big brother

  • I remember how my mom and I used to do this in her photo lab she had but with actual photo paper. I love digital film and all the things it does, but if I had the choice, I'd prolly stick with good old fashioned silver. plus, there's a certain satisfaction you get from developing a good print. :)

  • If u use a magnesium strip it will take less then 10 min.

  • that was pretty cool.

All we do in chem lab is identify chemicals and empirical formulas.

this would be a fun one to do.

  • Please show more Photochemistry if you can. It's Very COOL.

    Thanks.

  • The negative finish looks kinda like a heart. I guess you really do love science. :D

  • if you want to store the silver chloride for long periods of time without fear of photodecomposition, cleaned out amber glass A1 steak sauce bottles are GREAT!

  • wow that's a very nice logo...

  • I believe the amount of chlorine produced is miniscule because I've done this with my mom (who is a professional photographer) in a small enclosed darkroom, and I didn't smell anything that remotely smelled like chlorine.

  • nurdrage, the silver nitrate formed will form sodium nitrate solution right?

  • @ScienceGeek36

Yes but the liquid may also have unreacted silver nitrate and sodium chloride

  • we were just learning about this in class! i had a hard time getting everything down, but this video gives me a good idea.thanks!!

  • Is it possible to turn it back into silver chloride after exposing it to light? Im pretty sure the answer is no, but Im just checking.

  • do you want to play a game?...the voice sounds like jigsaw

  • when it decomposes it forms chlorine right?

  • can you fix it? congratulations!

  • Comment removed

  • HA, didn't let mine dry:P

But i'll post the video soon..

  • cool for nurds

  • This is interesting! Cool to know how this works.

  • it helps people

  • does it also make NaNO3?

  • Yes, it does

  • love your videos and im a subscriber but seriously, your nails are a little too long

  • he probley plays guitar

  • that would be an acceptable reason :D

  • If he playes the guitar, he has to have long nails

  • i play and have done for a long time and i dont have long nails

  • CAN I KEEP IT?

    IS IT SOLID?

  • I tried this, it works great! Is it releasing chlorine gas?

  • Yes:

    2 AgCl --light--> 2 Ag + Cl2

  • really cool experiment!

  • ಠ_ಠ

  • cool 5/5

  • I see you're backed-up with questions here lol. But can te AgCl be recycled, so that darkened powder can be re-lightened? Preferably without requiring chlorine gas to do it haha.

Great video though, thanks for sharing!

  • Yes, with a rehalogenating bleach, for example a solution of potassium ferricyanide and sodium bromide, or in this case you probably want sodium chloride - which should work - I think.

  • how would you fix the image, or stop it from further developing

  • With fixer.

You can make your own universal fixer from sodium thiosulphate (found at pool supply stores) or just use fixer.

  • could you prepare the AgCl ahead of time so that it is already dry? Would you spread a thin layer onto a solid support and expsose as demonstrated? and I assume store it away from light.

  • You can mix it with food gelatin found at stores to make an emulsion layer you can spread over something rather than straight powder.

  • Of course his voice really sounds like that! Born with two Y chromosomes, I'd wager.

  • does your voice actually sound like that?(no offence) or do you do some computer effects to hide your voice identity?

  • Next you need to show us how to develop the images.

  • Its already developed by exposure to light which does a similar thing as short exposure + chemical development

  • Greetings, nurdrage. Can we also use a centrifuge to settle the AgCl to the sides? Or will it have more disadvantage?

  • you could.

but you don't really need to, the extra recovery is very little.

But if you want, go for it :)

  • how can you stop any further reaction once the "image" has been etched?

  • Pretty cool, eh?

  • "pretty cool heh?" lol

  • If silver chloride precipitates from the solution, does the solution that you pour off now contain sodium nitrate?

  • Your videos are great, keep up the good work!

  • This is how early astronomers took pictures of the night sky!

  • what could be considered a bright light 100 watt light bulb?

  • When the AgCl decomposes, it decomposes into elemental silver and chlorine, correct?

  • yes

  • Poisonus Chlorine

  • You just lost the bet. We are completely and totally averse to making anything that goes boom. ;)

  • Why do you disgise your voice ?

  • @NurdRage in your opinion what was your most dangerous experiment so far?

  • I fill bad for you, because every one on youtube just wants to know how to make explosives, when this is chemistry! not explosives!

  • could i use the Silver chloride for flash powder

  • was this done in the olden days?

  • if you were to store the silver chloride for future use, you would have to use a solid or tinted container correct or is that even neccessary

  • You dont usually store AgCl. Usually you store AgNO3 and add Cl- to it when nescassary. But yes, if you did store it, youd need to use a tinted container

  • ok cool

  • if the precipitate is the silver chloride what happened to the sodium nitrate?

  • its in the water, which you blot away

  • Mix with magnesium powder, will it formation light sensitive flash powder?

  • nope

  • Ha, sorry I had to laugh at that.. just because you used a nitrate to produce it doesn't mean it still is a nitrate.. thats like using salt instead of a needed oxidizer because just because it's silver chloride, doesn't make it any better then sodium chloride. No oxygen there.

  • Wow :o Could this be how early photography started?

  • that was how, a mess in a lab istarde the whole thing

  • cool stuff

  • Alternatively, add ammonia to the mixture and watch your precipitate disappear. =D

  • That's doesn't help with the photochemistry.

  • Well no, but it's still kinda cool. Not awesome like what you did with the precipitate, but still cool. =)

  • if you want some cool science, check out our "NurdRage Presents: 3 cool things of science" video.

  • very cool stuff !! cant stop watching! when u going to make tcpo?

  • is it silver bromide that is used in film?

  • hi where can i get the silver bar and all the chemicals for this??

  • You don't need a silver bar for this, just silver nitrate and salt. You can buy salt at your local grocery, You can make silver nitrate in one of our previous videos.

  • Do you have a silver mirror reaction in one of your vids? Sorry didn't bother to check, if you do that's great, it's a neat reaction I believe to test for aldehyde.

  • check

  • i wonder if i could enter this is some kind of science fairs or somethin

  • i don't see why not. ;)

  • Subbed after watching the first vid.. have been watching all of them now. Very interesting stuff. can't wait to see how to make TCPO.

  • thx

  • genius genius genius

    love it :)

  • cool

  • awesome. I subbed too.

  • Thank you!

  • AWSOME

  • Thx! =)

  • Awesome n_n

  • thanks!

  • Sweet. :)

  • thanks!

  • Thats awsome as always

  • thx!

  • how much does a silver bar cost approx

  • Hard to say, prices vary depending on economy and shipping costs. Your best bet is to look in Ebay for silver bars. That will give you a rough idea how much it'll cost.

  • cool video again nurd rage!!! are u ever gonna shw ur real voice ;)

  • I'd rather people pay more attention to the videos than to me.

  • haha i was kidding

  • heheh :)

  • Nice! :D

Will try this at home! Just need to buy a silver bar. ;)

  • Good luck :D
