how much did the whole back wheel come to and was it brand new or second hand? need to know this as I might do one of these coversions :') oh and if you got it online can I get the name of the site PLEASEEEE!
@saynotoemo84 put the wheel in and keep it as far into the dropouts as you can, so that there is no more space left. Then wrap the chain around chainring so that the two ends meet then keep pulling the other end until its kinda tight (not too tight) keep in mind that once the chain is on you can move the wheel back in the dropouts for tension. So one the chain is tight count the number or links left over and take out one less than the amount you count. Message again if still confused.
well i think its possible to do the suicide cog but use the suicide wheel as ur front wheel and ur front whee; as ur back wheel? :/ idk if it works or not but yea
Hey, i have a question. I was thinking of converting a road bike to a fixed gear however i dont want to change the rear wheel. Do you think I can just remove the casette and buy a fixed cog with a fixed gear lock ring. the problem i have come up with is that to get the crank and the cog to line up straight, the chain wont be on correctly and will have too much slack, do you think i can just buy a new chain or take a few parts off the chain so it will be the right size? Or buy a larger cog?
@ArodProduction yeah i did watch it. but i saw that you guys bought a whole new wheel with the hub and cogs already on. I was wondering about using the same wheel but installing a fixed cog on. however some one already told me that road bike wheels dont have the threads to install a fixed cog. thanks anyways. and nice video
I got the wheel by looking on craigslist. I dont know if they have that in the UK. I bet they do. I didn't measure the dropout distance. It just worked out for us.
I've got the same problem, where did you buy that wheel with the flip flop hub? I live in the UK so wont have the same shops as you, also what was the distance between the two rear drop-outs and what length was your hub? I don't really know what im talking about so that might be wrong ahha
@giles50 the diffrence between the vertical drop-outs (like in the video) and normal horizontal drop-outs like you see on track bikes/fixed gears is that of course one horizontal and the other is vertical. But people prefer to use frames with horizontal drop-outs because its much easier to get proper chain tesion for the bike. Were bikes with vertical drop-outs its kind of harder because alot of times the drop-outs are to small to find proper chain tension, thats when tey get chain tensioners.
@jovannyzuniga534 the short answer is no. the unsafe answer is with a fixed cog locktight and a lock ring maybe. but dont do that because you'll get hurt.
@ArodProduction What I did is putting it on then put some locktight glue then put the lock ring and locktight glue again. Im still doing that and it still works :DD
@ArodProduction Yeah I don't use it anymore since I bought a new wheel set. There is a different feeling though. Great job on this fixed gear. You still ride that or have you upgraded to a track frame?
@FriskyPr0ductionZ but there are two different threads on there. That means its reverse threaded. If you put a lockring on a freewheel hub, it would thread on the same way as the cog. it MIGHT work, but unless you put LocTite Red or Blue on both the cog and the the lockring threads, you will get hurt. Hence the name, suicide hub. I talked to the guy at my LBS and he strongly suggested against it.
whay i would recommend if building a fixie is buying a track hub they usually cost $45 and even if your bike shop dosent have them in stock just ask if they could order one for you. however if you do buy a track hub you need to build up the rear wheel which is not the easiest process, but there are videos on youtube how to :P
@ArodProduction I have a question. I'm going to assume, that because it's an old 10 speed, that it takes 27" wheels. Where would you manage to find a fixed gear wheel that size? I've looked around, and they're like 100 bucks. So back to my main question, what is the size of the fixed wheel?
you can put a fixed cog, and then, a lockring. The cog will be unscrewing when you backpedal, or slow down, its true. But theres a lockring, which you need to screw counter-clockwise - and it prevents the cog to unscrew. Thats how the fixed gear works. And it's perfectly safe. You didn't have to buy fixed gear wheel lol.
@ArodProduction in a bike shop, probably, but not all. Here, in Poland, where i come from, i tried multiple bike shops, but they had only freewheels. BUT i found one tiny bike shop runned by one older man, an he got all the parts i needed. And really cheap! The fixed cog and lockring cost me equivalent of 2 $. So it's really cheap :)
@bonzoshifferman I used a fixed cog and lock ring. But a normal lock ring can fit on a normal wheel. I needed a flip flop hub that accepts a lock ring, that is why I had to buy a new wheel.
@ArodProduction yeah i had the same problem once, but two trips to the bike shop and i found good sized and counter-clockwise lockring that matches perfectly :)
@ubernasch416 some guys weld it, some guys dont. Truth is, it doesnt have to. It's perfectly safe without it. Every bike courier in my city is riding like that. My bike is super-extra safe, because i got front brake and i used special thread glue for the cog and lockring. It won't budge no matter what :) The glue itself is exspensive, it cost me equivalent of 5$ (it's expensive for a 2$ cog and lockring :D) - but it lasts for like ten glued bikes - so you can share it with friends.
@DreamingAboutDreams i mean you could use lock tight but then its gunna get stuck that way. Maybe put your wheel all the way up in the dropout, and shorten the chain to fit there. That way it wont have any more room to move forward.
IM GLAD YALL TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS! YOU CAN DO THINGS ON YOUR OWN AND PEOPLE DO NOT ALWAYS NEED SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT FOR THEM! JUST TRY THINGS OUT AND GET CREATIVE MAAN! awesome video
@brianotradovec Lets see.... , the bike was free (given from a friend) the chain tool cost about $12, freewheel remover $6 (returned and got money back), service to take freewheel off $7, and 27' fixed gear wheel flip flop hub with 2 different fixed cogs and lockring $35. (craig's list does wonders)
@SyrusPeriard I found someone selling on craigs list i think I paid $40. But you could probably get a new one at your lbs for like 65 with a cog and lock ring
@Gradystyle Right now its the same bottom bracket. But, this bike had cottered cranks and they are a btich, so If you have cottered cranks I'd suggest you replace them.
I'm sorry but fixed riding is already more dangerous so it's really not an option. Don't take it as any more offense, I liked the vids but that's just not how you build fixed gear. Your new wheel is much better though it's awfully cheap though. That's really a bargain.
omg you guys are so stupid. sorry to say this but everyone knows that fixed wheels are not made by removing the freewheel. So nice vid, but do your homework next time.
@arypma If everyone knew then we wouldn't have tried it huh? Anyway, I was trying to make this build by using the little money as possible... And as I stated, I could have made a fixed wheel that way but it's more dangerous. So it is and option, just not the best one.
use blue loctite and a big hill, and your cog will be stuck on for good. Ive been riding mine like that forever and I couldn't get it off if i wanted to.
