  • I'm moved...Thanks for sharing how you are keeping alive an unconventional and largely forgotten part of human musical experience.

  • @verstengenericks your welcome. i'm honored i could do that for you.

  • Not bad for 1 week. I hope you've improved since.

  • A sentimental song played on such a sinister and harsh medieval instrument. I tip my hat to you, sir.

Bernard Herrmann used the serpent to great effect in several of his film scores.

  • Your intonation sounds pretty good to me for only having played the instrument for 1 week. Listeners should see that this is not a wooden instrument as the original serpents were probably made from. Rather it is made from resin which has different sound charachteristics than wood.

Given some time to work on tone you will be a welcome addition to any group of vocalists who perform religious music or even popular music from the early 1700's and before. Good job!

  • As sick as it may sound, it's cute and charming in a very strange way

  • Back to this video for a visit. You are a very accomplished musician, congratulations. That having been said, your accompanist is a really hot pianist and what a great arrangement .... one of the finest I have heard.

  • @jpstenino why thank you! but i will have to spill the beans: that's a computer playing piano in this video the other one i have is with the real thing.

  • @Tubajock2 What ever do you mean? Is is midi or some kind of Karaoke?

  • @jpstenino I used a program called smart music to produce this. i played melody it followed me on accompanement. this is proof of how good that program is.

  • I kind of have a feeling that this instrument could really be played lyrically if enough effort is put into it.

  • @NoiseOverMusic it can!!! serpentmakers .ch websight has a good bank of mp3's you can listen to that proves that

  • Love IT !!!!

  • it sounds really good! I really like it

  • @thisismeww thanks!!!!!

  • @AtlasThePassivist lol thanks :) glad I could be of service.

  • I really don't like this instrument, NOT dissing the talent of those playing it, because it is very very hard to master any wind insturuments, but this instrument, when played alone, sounds like an elephant farting through a wet sock. It would take a very clever conductor to arrange an orchestra where this instrument sounded any good at all.

  • @thewr0ngchild agreed! for the most part, it by disighn is a background instrument. there are a few (less than 10) exceptions to this i have herd so far

  • Well, I must say, I am very open to all kinds of instruments and I've always thought that they are all beautiful in one way or another. But now I know there are reasons why nobody plays the serpent anymore. I mean, it sounds terrible; like when an euphoniumplayer plays while having a cold, seriously. I don't doubt your abilities, but to me it is obvious that it isn't really possible to get a nice tone on this instrument.

  • @DerAllerbesteHokage I do concur that i sound like Crap. i do, but Douglas Yeo doesn't he is the best in the world. lissen to his CD Le Monde Du Serpent all the way threw and you will see. with voices it blends better than most woodwinds (what it was designed 4), or when played solo some times has the same tamber of a bassoon and other times the richness of a euph (witch i can play). he has a few vids on youtube, go watch him not me

  • Awww ... it looks so cute nice and snuggly in it's wooden case ... ... where it belongs

  • Sounds like someone farting into a PVC pipe.

  • wow this is the ancestor of the tuba, euphonium, trombone and all the other low brass instruments.im an euphonium player and i have pretty good tone for someone who isnt a pro but i can understand the beastyness of this instrument.its actually got pretty good tone if you can play it right

  • that was....... beutiful i actually felt really sad listing to it I love the serpent now

  • @invaderrekon i'll take that as a complement. thank you! glad i could introduce you to

  • @invaderrekon I felt sad listening to this too!

  • sound's like a trombone with a broken water key i can't believe that's what they listened to back in the day

  • @stevenhamlin1000 and it plays like one..... but in the hands of a master it can sound very good. remember back then they were not looking for the "purest" tone like we do today. just like musical styles change, so do tonal preferences

  • Yikes!! A sound only a mother could love... interesting, though. Often wondered what they sounded like.

  • @dickb15 @dickb15

Honestly, and with NO OFFENSE INTENDED to tubajock2, this is not a good example. The serpent is so difficult and unstable that hardly anybody can play it gracefully. In the hands of somebody who's been after it for a *long* time, and who's put in a lot of effort, it's actually a very nice sound, somewhere between a horn and a trombone.

Check out Douglas Yeo's website for a pleasant surprise.

  • @frenchbassoon I agree with you 100% as a high school student i can only hope to achieve the level of proficiency as Yeo. i also say the serpent at times can sound closer to a bassoon.

  • few questions...

    how much did it cost?

    where did you get one?

is that what it is supposed to sound like or should it be getting a little air, sounds like you have your throat closed, i play brass and the sound sounds a little unnatural.

  • I've been wondering for years what a serpent sounded like. I'd only seen pictures until now.

  • glad i could help

  • @Tubajock2

I'm just like kittyprydekissme, in that this is my first time hearing it as well. Just wondering, is this thing more awkward to play than the tuba?

  • @JupiterIV well its like playing a Tuba with holes in it, it is a hole lot more awkward. as an example there are 3 bad notes B natural, F sharp, and C sharp. B natural and C have the same fingerings you have to bend the note down a half step. also you can bend most notes up and down a step or more, so playing in tune is a bear, and because it has holes getting good tone is hard. sing with your lips! hope this answers your question.

  • @kittyprydekissme Mind you it doesn't necessarily have to sound out of tune like in the case of this video...

  • interesting history: invented by a monk in the XVIth Century, to assist choirs in the churches. Totally illogical , 2 groups of 3 holes only placed together but it works! Then they put keys on it and made it in metal which became ophicleides. The ophicleide tested with a single reed, sound was beautiful, and we know the results today as the Saxophone.

  • where did you buy the monster ? from Moeck in Germany ? it has a good reedy sound.

  • Great job - hope the mouthpiece is serving you well... keep at it!

  • could you send me A Link to some of the Oil you recommended I couldn't find any in town.

  • No one learns but making mistakes. Keep on playing and don't pay attention, rather don't be impatient either with fools or with the serpent.

  • Sounds like it was invented by Marquis de Sade, but getting any tone on it is a minor miracle. Just don't put it in the case after the newness wears off. Keep up the practice. And, btw, one improves most by doing--not reading, listening, observing, though all those things are good as ajuncts to the learning process. And if you think you sound bad, you should hear me on my new rackett.

  • Thank you! :) I will try to keep doing as much as I can. I'd like to here you on that wonderful instrument! thank you for your encouragement and instruction. I am grateful for it.

  • Comment removed

  • i didn't do as bad as some, and yes this was 2 weeks after i got it in my postilion. i plan on not quitting playing this wonderful instrument so ya come back to my channel in a few years and catalog my progress. I do not appreciate the negative comment. if you or anyone is going to give any beginner criticism make it constructive, i got no instruction on how to better myself from your comment.

i ain't perfect but I'm still green respect that.

  • @metoyen You are a brain owner--OF which--that's the correct English, BTW--there are many. Why don't you practice for a few years before allowing yourself to disgrace idiots, O Idol of Idiot-Worshippers.

  • should whack some electronics on that thing

  • your suggestions please

  • thats awsome

  • Thanks

  • Gotta say...For only playing one week your tone is pretty decent. Get A video up :)

  • Video is up XD

  • Pretty cool! But it would have been nice to actually see you playing. Do you have access to a video camera?

  • this was made spur of the moment. i accotionaly have access to a camera . i'll try to git a vid up in the upcomeing mounths. (mind my horrid spelling
