It seems so easy to get arrested in the US. In most places in Europe, an arrest is a big deal and officers need just cause to execute one. They also get in trouble afterwards, if the arrest is deemed illegal by courts.

What police really hate (at least in the UK) is official complaints. Over here we have the Independent Police Complaints Commission ; I can tell you individual police and whole departments actually fear the reprisal which can come from written complaints backed with names, numbers and evidence. I don't expect the secret service are going to furnish you with that though, America probably ain't the same either, but in the UK this is the soft underbelly of the police, who 'normally' are ok

I would have gone about things in a different way but since she didn't I just don't see why she was arrested. I hope she does press charges against what happened to her and her colleague(s). Especially since one of them apparently was hurt enough to need the hospital.

You need to sue the cops, Federal agents, and their supervisors personally. They need to learn that a badge is not a license to break the law with impunity. Way to lump everyone together. Usually you can but in situations like this sometimes cops, at least the officer dealing with Ms Goodman, have zero tolerance. The best thing to do is to cooperate and don't say anything (Miranda rights says you don't have to) and to call a lawyer asap.

It seems so easy to get arrested in the US. In most places in Europe, an arrest is a big deal and officers need just cause to execute one. They also get in trouble afterwards, if the arrest is deemed illegal by courts.

arngre - here in the US you need probable cause - unfortunately, not too much will happen if the arrest is not legal. All that will happen is that the charges will not stick. That does not matter to them, though, because they just want to terrify people and "clear the streets". There may be an investigation in the Police Department, but they usually get away scott-free by the police "investigation." They have an unspoken code of silence - an officer will not speak out against other police.

No, in a country where protesters are guaranteed the right to peaceably assemble, they should not EXPECT to be "despanded" (sic). Even if some of the protesters get out of hand, you arrest THOSE protesters, you don't break out tear gas and rubber bullets and start arresting the press.
