What type of scooter do you have! (Whats the name of it) i have the exact same moped in blue but dont know anything about it! I dont even have license plates nor a tittle! And also where can i buy parts for it! Please help! (the creator of this awesome vid)
my moped has no gears... should i still do this? it's a jmstar '09 model if anyone can help me. also i have no idea where to drain my engine oil from...
@lauriejennifer I saw that addy across someone else's vid too. Guess I'll have to go check it out!! They eat you alive here for parts in Vegas 15 BUX for a tail light BULB from my dealer! Then I found scrappy dog. They're based here and their prices are awesome!
@wasillissor WTF, go die and stop being a moronic dick, maybe you should say, Hey, I'm a fucking idiot and thankyou for showing me how to change my oil"
I put a little in the top screw of the three screws before I realized it was wrong and then I put it in the center hole with the copper seal. My question is does anybody know what happens to the oil I put in the top hole? Before I filled the correct center hole I opened up the drain plug below a second time but nothing came out. That makes me worried that the oil in the top hole is just sitting there maybe soaking up an oil gasket or something. Thanks.
Great video. Do you know how much gear oil to put in? Like how many CCs or ML or OZ? I planned on using a little plastic syringe thingee. You should make more scooter maintenance videos! Please! Us other chicks want to know how to fix and maintain scoots! :)
Awesome vid, thanks for the help. Few questions, what type of gear oil is best? Also, can you make a vid on how to change the engine oil and point out what type is best? Can you also do a tune up?
thank you for this post iv been trying to figuer out how to do this for 2 weeks i i could find the drane plug but could not figuer out how to fill it back up you have saved me a lot of money and the agervation of going to a shop to have someone else do it for me
I just got a new scooter and in the manuel it saids to change the oil the first 300 miles and I did but then I was looking @ random scooter videos and came across this one and I was like "ohh man" now I have to change more oil lol, your a lot of help thanks I wouldve never knew lol my motor probly wouldve blown
thanks for the video. i just joined scooter forum and saw this cause i was searching around on meitian scooter info. how often exactly do you need to change the gear oil, i have 945 on mine right now. thanks in advance
I know most manuals say every 600 or 1000 miles. And many people have gone as long as 3000 miles, because they're used to a car.
But this isn't like a car and going that long has cost many people the longevity of their scooter. If you change the oil more frequently, the engine will last longer, plain and simple. Remember there's only barely one quart of motor oil in there (and much less for the gear oil). And for the motor oil
I changed mine every 300 miles, which was half the time...cont.
@lauriejennifer just on small tip, on cars, scooters or motorcycles. After you remove the drain plug also loosen (in this case removing) the fill plug, this way you relieve any vacuum pressure which can stop all of the oil from draining. The oil will flow much faster too, clearing out more debris.
...recommended by the manual. But it made a world of difference. By the time I sold this poorly made scoot, it was actually in better condition than when I bought it and the engine was broke in very, very well.
In other words, if you already have on 945 miles, I would change it ASAP, especially if this is your first change. When the engine is younger, you want to be extra good to it.
I'm assuming it doesn't still have the oil it came with from factory. That stuff is BAD.
@lauriejennifer i just watched your vidoe on the oil change , it was so cool i have done 11 thousand miles on my scooter and iam to nervous to change the oil , but know after watching you do it , i think a can you made it look so simple, i got a kymco agilty 125cc
Check under the gear box, like on my scooter here. Most generic made-in-China scooters are pretty similar. Look for the screws that have copper washers with them. That would be where you would add and drain the gear oil.
Or post a video of a detailed walk around (especially of the gearbox area, like where I'm showing here on this video) and I'll see if I can help you spot it. Or, if you live in the Chicago area, send me a Youtube message.
Hey Laurie I'm left handed too. I also got a chinese scooter and I think I should change the gear oil myself i'm just unclear with something you warn about on your video. How much is putting too much gear oil how much should I put? Is it essential to use that injecting gun thing too?
No problem! If you have any other requests or questions about your scoot, let me know. I've got most of the basics down (even though I've since moved up to a Ninja).
And, by the way, I had an absolute blast with this scooter. And once I fixed a few things (they were a result of poor assembly at the plant, and shipping damage), it ran like a champ. I put 2100 miles on it in less than 4 months. :-)
With a little mechanical know-how, they can be alright. Keep in mind that you *do* get what you pay for. So, if you're only paying $700 for a vehicle, well... you get a vehicle worth $700. I had all sort of initial issues with mine. But now I know that you have to carefully and *thoroughly* go over these bikes before you first ride them. Inspect everything, even (especially) everything that came "preassembled." Most issues you would otherwise have can be avoided right there.
Yea most of em' are 7-8 hundred dollars and they're Chinese made, but the ones that I'm looking at are like new used bikes. Overall I'd just need to do a thorough inspection of the bike and make sure that all is in good enough condition.
If you have any specific questions or troubleshooting issues, feel free to ask. I got fairly familiar with my bike while I had it. I had to fix things like a gas leak and the cooling fan...
Good luck with that! If anyone can keep it from falling apart, it's probably someone like you.
But I don't actually have this scooter anymore. I sold it before I got my Ninja. No moolah for both, you know? I had to pay rent. LOL.. I can't wait for my job to start in August. Living on credit is no bueno.
yep. im installing it, and itll either be my main mode of transport or i might try to trade it for a motorcycle......not sure.... i realllllly want a bike though lol. 45mph tops aint that exciting lol
Walmart gear oil and a Chinese scooter is a match made in heaven. If you start the bolt with your fingers, than your less likely to cross thread the bolt.
No worries! Glad I could help. I was nervous the first time I changed it, too. The pictures in the "manual" were no help at all, and I was just sort of guessing. I actually had a mechanic friend of mine come help me, because I was worried I wouldn't do it right. But once you do it/see it done once, you realize it's a piece of cake. Good luck with your scoot!
Laurie seems like you've kinda switched from parkour to scooter-vlogging - is this a new direction for u with ur account & if so do u plan on getting a better cam? Just curious is all.
Luv the parkour vids too, there hasn't been a motovlogger with those interests that I know of, so u might be the first :-)
A better camera is actually in the mail right now. I've never had my own for any of my videos, except the vlogging videos where I use my cellphone (like this one).
Don't worry. I'll still be doing Parkour videos, too. And I've been dabbling in freerunning and tricking. You HAVE to see those bails! Lulz.
If ur getting an HD cam you'll definately be the first scooter vlogger to do it. & even tho ur only using a cell phone, the vids are well put together... I guess ur AV experience certainly helps :-)
And, actually, I have some sad news... I just sold the scoot. I had to. I need/want something bigger, and I have bills. And I'm not in the position to have my cake and eat it, too. The video of the sale will be the next one, put up later this week.
Ohhh ok, well I guess you're no longer a motovlogger then :-( I've enjoyed ur vidz tho, I hope things get better for u soon - they usually do at some point. Take care & I hope u return to motovlogging soon ;-)
LOL! Thanks. Yeah, it's too bad I didn't get that one on film, right? (Not that I could run with all that gear on...) Except it would have been like an episode of Jerry Springer and just one long continuous "Beeeeeeeeep!" My language, normally very clean, was [understandably] atrocious.
I was curious about how fast a 50cc scooter can go. I sat on one the other day. I was able to sit and keep my leg awkwardly straight. It may be an option to get around on my own. And I like the sticker too.
On level ground, I had no problem going 30-40mph. Downhill, I could easily top 45mph. And uphill reminded me I was only on a scoot: max speed was a measly 15-25mph, depending on the grade. I just took back roads and avoided hills as much as possible.

is the scooter belt drivin? why does it need gear oil? i have a 180cc scooter its a JMStar i havent seen anything about gear oil ?
babyboy10492 2 years ago
Yes, it is belt-driven. That has nothing to do with why it needs gear oil. It is a small engine. And it has gears. The oil is not for the belt.
The motor oil is separate. I'm not familiar with your brand of scooter. Maybe yours doesn't need it? I would check the owner's manual.
lauriejennifer 2 years ago
i just checked it and yes it needs to be changed i just have to figure out how lol(the manual doesnt explain or show where it is :( )
