In Japanese L and R often make the same sound and are interchangeable. The character's name is Light, but is spelled Raito in Japanese. (Most Japanese words also add a vowel at the end.) So Light is the English version and Raito is the Japanese version, but they are both pronounced in a similar way and convey the same meaning. :-)
