I don't know what it is...but from day 1 I have always loved them! Their songs are so different than our all American songs...especially their slower songs are so different sounding; and I think that's why my society isn't used to this type of music...I love my country...but I have to agree...A-ha will always be top notch #1 in my book! I like this song the more I listen to it. I love the layers of "lifeline" meanings:

-The path of your life (follow it through)

-Rescue when in need (don't throw them away)

-Contact with others in your life (don't let them go)

-The signs of age and experience - wrinkles! (let them show!)

-Perhaps even roots (how do we grow?)

The metaphors are handled with enough subtlety to keep from being hackneyed, and what results is a brilliant lyric about the beauty of life and love in all its seasons.

the one thing i don't understand is why the guitars were buried in the mix on their early work when it's clear that they can play...it's nothing fancy, but it works...it took them a few albums to bring that "organic" sound into their work...

Well, each to his own opinion. Lifelines is my favorite album. Other songs I think are classics on it are: Forever Not Yours, Time and Again, White Canvas and Dragonfly. Of course ME|MS has the great Summer Moved On and Velvet.

Wow...watched the whole video this time, instead of listening to it at work....and there was the strongest sense of deja vu seeing Morten in this atmosphere especially right after the town villiage scene and you see him by himself just before the white house. It was a very weird bittersweet feeling. That said, this is absolutely beautiful footage and I am entranced by the creativeness of this video. I feel the video (as they so rarely do) adds depth and dimension to the song's lyrics. God bless!

Agree :) this video is fantastic. But its from a shortmovie called (translated from norweigian) " year around in Børfjord". Where they took pictures every day for a year. Became a 15-20 min long movie. ITs located in Børfjord, Sørøya, near Hammerfest, in north Norway.

Stunning visual. I love this piece of video. I love how blue and cold the first scene is.

The full length film is amazing. It's from a short called "A Year Along the Abandoned Road" shot in Finnmark in the early 1990's. The editor did a great job of adding the band throughout the video.

Lifelines

Single released July 2002

The video is based on a Norwegian short film called 'A year along the abandoned road' directed by Martin Skallerud in 1991. He used a specially developed nature animation technique. The end result shows a whole year passing by in one shot at 50 000 times the normal speed. Magne was the first person who were able to buy rights to use the film. They cut it down from 12 to 4 minutes and the boys were edited in. It really is a piece of art.
