Beauty is coming to a clearing in the woods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan overlooking a crystal clear river just before sunset and the sky is bleeding a beautiful maroon and orange fading into the pinkish blue peripheral of the horizon you find a fallen tree and lightly brush the snow off and sit down packing your cheap yet trusted Dr Grabow packing it tight with billy bud striking a match and igniting a full body sensation of relief while you notice your footsteps and realize you're proba
Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder? What if beauty, true universal beauty, is something that cannot be "seen" with the human senses? "beauty is whatever causes the strings of my mind to resonate harmoniously."-Maniacallmikal
What if the image of smeared feces on a white canvas causes ones "strings of their mind" to "resonate harmoniously"? So is that smeared feces true beauty? No, its still shit.
I think harmony and balance is the base of beauty. When some thing is harmonious and balanced on several levels, it is considered "very beautiful". When something that is very beautiful has an unexpected element to it as well, it is considered "stunningly beautiful"!
Personally I think that enjoyment of perceived beauty is ultimately subjective to individuals or cultures, but concepts of beauty can be taught i.e. programmed. Studies have been done in the past where children from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds were instructed to pick "the prettiest dolls" from a selection and they mostly picked up the fair skinned blond dolls....
On a more positive note, art and music appreciation can be taught to the ignorant!, what makes "good art or classical music"
Joffre's comment is spot on, if one understands harmony as a perfect balance between order and chaos (just a pinch of chaos, in my case). A slightly croocked tree is probably more harmonious than a perfect one. It's the personal taste in the order/chaos "percentual" balance that explains the subjectivity of the beauty concept.
Deep question. I do believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but that it is also a combination of asthetics and intrinsic beauty. It is relative...just so long as it's not your relative LOL! Nice vid and thanks.
Hi Manuel, that is quite possible - I didn't take a great deal of notice at the time since there's always something making some sort of noise. There is a lot of bird life around here. Cheers! Ferrick
I think that place and harmony have to be considered when thinking about beauty. The more in harmony to its place in the cosmos something is, the more beautiful, and the more the beholder is in harmony with his place, the better situated to perceive beauty he is.
Can not beauty be perceived in chaos and disorder as well? Conventional notions of harmony and balance can detract from beauty just as easily as they can contribute to it. Something can be beautiful because of the fact that it stands out from the flow of it's surroundings, and one's eye is naturally drawn to such things. This also can apply to when one is placed in a situation that would normally be out of their comfort zone, they in turn can be more open to perceive beauty than before.
Today it would seem to be a used pair of knickers on a stick.. For me it is the music of Richard Wagner.. the complete experience you see you hear.. I think of how warped our view has become in the last thirty years - the cult of youth plastic surgery etc.. Great topic F, have a great weekend, Cheers, Tim
for me beauty is always been the things that i adore or astonish at that certain instance rather than a set of pre-assigned criteria however it have to be still acceptable to the surroundings nevertheless a person never know what is their personal preference unless they venture into the unknown and give it a try..
i love the erinmore flake and like u do i prefer them with a pinch of perique or orientals embedded in the middle of folded flake
Good topic , I agree beauty is in the eye of the beholder . Along with a whole lot of deeper stuff . Unselfish acts that are done in secret , so no one knows accept the person who did it and God . That's beauty . Peace , michael
There was a scientific study about human beauty that showed people find other people who have symmetrical faces beautiful. This cut across culture and ethnicity. They even developed a system of geometric overlay that when applied to any movie star or model shows that they all have this in common. I suspect this has to do with our evolutionary priority to pick mates who are healthy and robust. Of course it does beg the question that if this is so why are there so many ugly people in the world.
Another nice Video! and the second really nice Dr Grabow I have seen in the last couple of days! Who say they don't make nice pipes. I guess those who do, do not know what beauty is! lol.
To me, beauty is something that can be found in the appearence, but the greatest beauty is, in a person, inside. The strength of one's character.
Good topic Ferrick. Usually the thing I say is "beautiful" is nature. There is nothing like taking a hike through a forest or in the mountains and sitting next to a creek and just taking it all in. It is almost a spiritual experience for me. There is a lot more I could say on this subject but it would end up being way to long so I will just cut it off here.

Beauty for me can take many forms but most of what i percieve to be beautiful hold the triats of: Purity, subtlety and harmony.

A pint of Broughton's Oatmeal Stout and a pipeful of something latakia heavy on a rainy day. Brings a tear to my eye.
