@MausTanker, their claws actually retract. That being said, when a cat touches you with its paw it doesn't necessarily scratch you. They mostly know what they are doing (mostly). Besides, you don't have to declaw them, you can just trim their claws :)

I work in a vet clinic with a veterinarian with 20 yrs of experience, a veterinary technician with 30 yrs of experience, and I've been in the operating room while kittens have been declawed. The hole the claw comes out of is cut (made wider) to remove the end of the toe and sown shut. Declawed cats don't have that opening any more. Cats do care. Declaws are done on kittens b/c older cats have problems adjusting afterwards. Some stop walking and eating.

@MausTanker You should look at the skeletal structure of a cats paw. You'll see why the whole end is removed. The claw is attached to the bone. If it's not properly removed and the claw grows back it will slowly grow through the skin; that's painful. Removing the whole end of the toe up to the joint eliminates the possibility of it growing back.

@Guenter134 Actually declawing is like cutting off your finger, or at least part of it. The end of the toe is removed. On the human hand that's removing the ends of your fingers up to that first joint right after the part where your nail goes under the skin. Cutting the nail is the same as cutting yours; they grow back. I'm a veterinary technician. I've seen it done. Look at the skeletal structure of a cats paw to see why it's removed.

I had no idea thats what declawing was, My grandma way back when had cats with no talons... but the whole paw was in tact and it still split at the ends when it stretched. I guess she must of just routinely had the talons cut really really short, or removed them as they grew back.

My cat literally scratches my head over and over with her paws but not with her claws. I usually sleep on my stomach so she usually does it on the back of my head. She's tiny, but generates a lot of force and turns my hair into a birds nest as she bites out a few strands. She wakes my husband by licking inside his nostrils and ear canal which she used to do to me but due to being a really heavy sleeper she moved on to more drastic measures with me but not my husband. TOO smart sometimes lol.
