@RXstriderr Both create fine images. PASM shooting modes on both. Pocketability, go s100. Creativity, go LX5. Video's about=. S100's 1080p HD's better on paper than the LX5's 720pHD, but looks better only on a 50"+ screen. Prefer a more "movie" look (24 fps playback) & stereo sound? Go s100. A smoother "video" look (30fps) & mono sound playback, go LX5. S100 shutter speed=1/2000-15sec., LX5 shutter speed=1/4000-250sec. in manual mode. In "manual mode" w/ shutter speeds >1sec, the s100(con't.)

@RXstriderr (con't.)...defaults to iso 80. The LX5's "M" mode is more truly "manual". The S100 has more zoom, but only @ 24mm is it as fast as the LX5. LX5 battery life =400 shots, the S100's, 200 shots. The S100 has GPS, the LX5 doesn't. The LX5 supports optional O & E VF's & has a hot shoe for an optional electronic flash unit as well. The S100 supports neither. LX5 focuses @ 1cm, the S100 @3cm for macro. S100 has slightly less noise @ higher iso. Price? LX5's currently cheaper.

To sum up the difference of purposes of ea. camera, I think it's safe to conclude that if having 1 of the top 2 or 3 best fixed lens point & shoot cameras with you more often because of its smaller dimensions in order to be able to "get the shot", then go S100. But if your picture-taking & lifestyle lets you explore the more creative options of a camera, then go LX5. Btw, the LX5's 250 sec. shutter speed in Manual mode isn't a misprint w/ the firmware update.

It's clear in the first balcony image comparison that the xz1 had the flash on, which doesn't really give a fair comparison.

Also there was no mention of the massive aperture differences in the tele end

DigitalRev's old review of the GRD III was rather unbecoming (and uninformative perhaps, in comparison to these), considering the camera series has a sort of cult following, and some very niche features. @Sandalistan W/ another well known in-depth review site experiencing what it's terming "lens decentering" issues in 3 out of 3 sample S100 cameras provided to it for an in-depth review, Canon may have indeed produced a "Powershit" camera, a hot and steaming pile of...something or other, however, it may be something that a lot of other enthusiast p&s camera users wouldn't so enthusiastically describe as a "cool" camera.

@MyNinjapanda I'll have to admit that I literally did a double-take when I read your post, because there are many review sites out there that CORRECTLY STATE THAT (at least the U.S. version of) THE S100 IS INDEED CAPABLE OF THE RAW FORMAT. So, went DigitalRev's "Shop" tab > "Point & Shoot">"Sub-Categories"--->"Ca­non", to the S100 link, & scrolled down to "Show product specification", & there it currently says, across from "Raw Shooting"------->NO. Definitely weird. Hope this is corrected soon.

This was a press conference folks, not a venue where DigitalRev could control conditions in order to craft an internet production of a full review of the camera. If they could have, they would have. Anyone w/ DigitalRev long enough knows that as soon as the camera comes to them, instead of them having to go to the camera under conditions that they can't control, there will be more said about the S100. There were @ least 5 DRTV vids highlighting the S95, so just have some patience, 'k folks?

I would still chose olympus xz-1, because it has a lot faster lens (at the end 2.5 vs 5.9, which means that you can chose lower ISO), but I see why someone would chose canon - smaller, better video mode... Thanks for review.

@thismetalbitch Unless you'd use 1080p HD video, or the newer wider (but no faster) 24mm wide end of the zoom while knowing that the rest of the focal length of the lens is actually slightly slower than the S95, & if GPS is another "must have", even though there's been no net gain in battery life (the battery IS NOT interchangeable w the S95) & you're not put off by reports of "lens de-centering", then buy an S100. But, if it was my choice, I'd stick w/ the S95 for at least awhile longer.

In my opinion, this S100 really is an excellent camera. Well, I haven't got my hands on one, but just by looking at this videos and comparison, you can definitely tell that the image and video quality is good (for a PnS camera at least).
