she kissed the head becuz that was how it was depicted in the history. they should also made a story about how she killed herself after her love was rejected by a dude. it would have been more dramatic and tragic ;D
I think this is really lovely. It's very ballet influenced. It's dramatic and theatrical. Her arms and hands are beautiful, and her emotive skills are very good.
There's nothing wrong with this costume. It's not a cheap airport special, and not everyone needs to wear a Bella to look good onstage.
She grabs the head because the head is part of this story and the choreographer made an artistic choice.
@chokedad i dont think you are being fair... many past opera's and operettas include dancing singers. If not then opera should be looking to the likes of gene kelly for inspiration imo
The wests fascination with Salome happened at that same time as the introduction of the exotic notion of Belly Dance. I consider Salome and Mata Hari in the early 1900s to be the birth of what we now perform as Belly Dance. So in this sense Julia's performance is "AUTHENTIC".
Mata Hari danced Indonisian & far Eastern dances or though Polish I belive by Birth. Was Married to a Duch Army officer who's postings were in The Duch colonays of the Far East. were she took up dancing out of bordom.
Her Life story was published in the Daily Mail about 12 months ago.
Ballet or belly dance or ballet/ belly dance fusion - Does it matter? She is beautifully dancing the movement and the music from her heart and soul and that is what matters most - isn't it?
I agree with you people. Georgeus, but is much more ballet than belly dance. Too straight to be call so. Anyway we should consider her performance to get some ideas and make our dance more elegant.
While she is obviously a dancer of some talent this is not by any means belly dance. A belly dancer would probably have tried to avoid flashing her bottom at the audience. I agree.. ballet. Beautiful woman and she's very limber though.
While this was a very nice performance, I wouldn't consider it bellydance, as it is labelled under "Tags." It seemed very balletic and had very few recognizable bellydance movements at all outside of the head rolls at the end.
very nice...

@chokedad: and also that opera singers for some reason tend to be fat. This certainly does not help, namely in this type of scenes, ha, ha, ha!

There is an inherent problem with this scene in that professional opera singers are not professional dancers and vice versa.

Bravo pour cette chorégraphie audacieuse. Il n'y a pas de barrière entre les sortes de danse. Julia Kulakova est magnifique. Merci

Bringing in Johns severed head is the point at which the dance becomes exotic and shows what Salome is all about.

That is an awesome dance number she has ever done. By the way, that's a finale of "Dance of The Seven Veils" from Salome by Richard Strauss.
