"He wasn't able to give the people what they wanted today."
IMO,I say screw the people, screw the Triple Crown. When something like that happens, NOTHING else matters except that horses life. Its awful watching an animal get put down. This jockey is awesome for doing what he did afterwards. Like he said, that horse evidently ran his ass off it wasn't like he gave up in the end. Those horses never do.
ts383, this guy is my uncle... he died wen i was about 2 years old, i am 13 now. his parents were william antley and machelle antley. his sister was lesley antley, brother is bryan antley.
@layton056 You shpuld be very proud of your uncle. What he did on that day took a helluva lot of courage and selflessness.I often bring this up when trying to explain the need to put what is right before all else. Even in the face of true danger. On that day, at that moment, Chris Antley personified it. God Bless you Chris
Hey hcy, please show proof that he was. As far as I know he is still standing at stud. We do have buy back clauses for our horses we send to other countries.
Fred Stone painted a great picture of Chris and Charismatic that shows what happened right after the injury. If you haven't seen it, go to Fred's site and take a look.
A few months ago I talked to Michael Blowen during a tour at " Old Friends" rescue for horse in Kentucky and he said that they plan to bring both Charismatic and War Emblem home from Japan when they are done standing stud in Japan. I can't wait!
@hcyvonne1 As of Jan. 2011, both Charismatic and War Emblem are still standing at stud in Japan. "Old Friends," an organization set up to care for retired racehorses after Ferdinand's horrible end was brought to light, is monitoring the horses' status and has been in communication with the farm where they are located. Both Charismatic and War Emblem will return to the States upon retirement and be sent to Old Friends, to live their remaining years in peace and loving care.
That is a bunch of BULL! He is alive and well in Japan and stands for $5,000 (roughly) in US dollars. Please look things up before you make ridiculous statements.
I will never forget this day. I was at Keeneland watching live. I'm a enthusiast, and when that happened my heart fell through my feet. I remember dropping tears, and hoping no one would notice. Anyone close to racing knows this is just a nightmare... and it was a big blow to the sport, as was the demise of GO FOR WAND, Barbaro, etc...
No matter what wrongs Mr. Antley may have encountered or caused in his life, he showed what his spirit is made of after this race. It was painful to see
Chris--wow. I can't believe the guts it must have taken to sit down in the middle of a racetrack of thundering horses to guard an agonized horse's leg. I can come up with four different ways to get killed doing that just off the top of my head.
Love you Chris. Wish you'd been kinder to yourself, you deserved the world.

So often those who suffer at the hands of the same demons that haunted Chris have the absolute biggest hearts.

@ridingxruffian That takes monumental compassion. If more people were like that, the world would be a better place
