When he was 3, Sam was diagnosed with IgM nephropathy, a rare kidney disease that causes his immune system to attack his kidneys. Sam takes the steroid Prednisone, which keeps his body from attacking itself. But the drug’s side effects stunt his growth, make his body swell and weaken his immune system.

This kid did more in his short life then you can ever dream of...Sam inspired a lot of people and I hold a lot of respect for him! I did not know him personally but I will miss him and his courage. As for Sam, I know a bit a bout this kidney disease and its side effects because my oldest brother suffers from it too..Though my youngest brother gave him a kidney many yrs ago..the medications are lifelong and harsh on the body system of the patient taking them.

Sam (the boy) is not too fat, he is suffering from a kidney disease and is on extremely harsh steroids that are keeping him alive. In case you could not tell that by the overly puffy and red cheeks. People with this kind of illness suffer such side affects, it has nothing to do with being heavy or over eating. Even the thinnest people with this disease get bloated like that during treatment. I think they are both adorable in their own way, though Amy is the original singer and is now 18 now.
