I do have sympathy, but really, I get no assistance, I pay taxes (aint't gonna lie, I don't pay much), and I stuggle to make ends meet. Sometimes after paying bills, it's "top raman" soup and ketcup with hot sause for the month.

I get food stamps. Why? I'm a young cancer patient that is having a hard time finding work. My gf works full time and is in college. There are ways to stretch the stamps that you do get...it's called GENERIC foods. We shop at Aldi's for most of our items, and what we can't get there we go and get the cheapest we can find at Walmart. I can't wait until we can afford to buy what we need for ourselves. Right now I've got my fingers crossed that I'll get a part time job I interviewed for soon.

I did have a good job...22 years worth, and when I had to use food stamps, I did NOT feel guilty about it cause I payed into the "system" for all the years that I worked and paid taxes. They can just take the food stamp "tax" money out of the taxes I paid since I was 16!!

Those things are cheap fillers, and I know beans and rice make a complete protien. However, as a Diabetic, these food items turn to sugars quickly and starches, and my body cannot process them like a non diabetic. In the old days, the Irish at cabbage and potatoes.

I get food stamps. Why? I'm a young cancer patient that is having a hard time finding work. My gf works full time and is in college. There are ways to stretch the stamps that you do get...it's called GENERIC foods. We shop at Aldi's for most of our items, and what we can't get there we go and get the cheapest we can find at Walmart. I can't wait until we can afford to buy what we need for ourselves. Right now I've got my fingers crossed that I'll get a part time job I interviewed for soon.

Our foundation has been on the poor & with the sharks of the dog eat dog world, it put us here. People know that people that are poor take in more food stamps then the taxes they pay out. And with low taxes coming we will be losing the way to stop this road we are on! The FDA was getting ready for 41 mill people in 2010 & in 2011 they are getting ready for 43 mill. If a person qualifies for foodstamps ( I know foodstamps workers), they have to really be down and out financially. And they can't have good cars to drive. Or things like that. I have no objection to the notion of recipents taking a class or some sort of written pre screening that would address budgeting as well as how to shop for good food.

I budget $20 per person per week and that pays for food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and all other "basic necessities". I know how to shop smart. Anyone getting food stamps should be REQUIRED to attend a monthly class on shopping smart, no attendance = no food stamps. Don't like it? Don't spend taxpayers money... get your own.

@joeysixtysix It isn't it's only suppose to help with groceries but since the U.S government gives anyone one with kids $400plus in stamps. so they have an extra $200 in stamps to spend on chips pop cookies and crap that's not really food. but don't worry when I run for president and win. I'll make sure people on food stamps can only buy the basics "potatoes milk rice bread meat". (not steak or ribs that's for dam sure) no pop icecream or candy vote for me in 2020 I'll be running as a Democrat !

I can't believe the stuff I read on these posts. The reason the poor often buy "junk" food is it is often less expensive than whole grain healthy foods. Go to any market and see how much it costs to buy a loaf of white bread and compare that to a loaf of whole grain bread. The poor also have to buy food that lasts and does not spoil because they don't have the luxury of multiple freezers, etc. And what kind of food lasts the longest? PROCESSED FOOD. Have some compassion for those with less.

@Bloodstryke I'm not on foodstamps, but as a Diabetic, I cannot eat the things you suggested....beans, rice, wheat. Even potatoes. Those things are cheap fillers, and I know beans and rice make a complete protien. However, as a Diabetic, these food items turn to sugars quickly and starches, and my body cannot process them like a non diabetic. In the old days, the Irish at cabbage and potatoes.
