  • I try to use the best...but if there's a good sale I usually buy what's on sale :)

  • Do you use any particular kind of canned tomato such as a san marzano? ( I heard they were good for gravy)..Or any particular brand of canned tomato? by the way I really enjoy your recipes : )

  • I made this great Italian Sunday Gravy, the meat melted in our mouths like Holy Communion. Absolutely FANTASTIC! Princess Diana you rule!!! Thanks for sharing!

  • I love this video, I love watching the Italian ladies cook, I've learned so much from them!

Thanks for a great Sunday gravy recipe!

  • so sad, you left Frankie and moved to Florida. Posts have been boring since........

  • @ma5468 if you feel like that then you have a pleasant surprise coming your way ;)

  • @PrincessDiana161 Diana, u Italian? I grew up in New Orleans like the poster below, which I grew up amongst Italians. New Orleans has a lot of Italian Americans. I learned to make a mean Sunday gravy. I put meatballs, Italian sausage, pork chops, hard boiled eggs, and sometimes chicken drumsticks. I serve it with angel hair pasta. That's how my best friend's Sicilian great grandmother showed me. I'm Spanish, but when I cook a Sunday gravy, I could pass for Italian, lol.

  • @IslenoGutierrez No...I'm Spanish :)

  • @ma5468 What???? They were so cute together!

  • this looks divine, diana! can't wait to try this!

  • I could watch ya all day, Princess Diana! The cooking looks great...I can smell it all the way from Chicago!! This is one of the cooking videos on Youtube!! Thank you!!

  • your food looks delicious

  • GOD. If this were my italian mom, I would not dick around! Stay straight.

  • I wanna smell your Cookie

  • you're such an artist - and Frankie is such a comedian! Always learn from you and always laugh, thankyou for taking the time to do these.

  • Wow, awesome, cooking this for the family! How is Di so slim and milfy after all this Italian grub?

    Kind regards from Wales, UK.

    :)

  • Just like mama used to make.......sniff!!!

  • I still reference this video! Great job!!!

  • Great job! This was awesome.

  • GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome Sauce video! Loved it! :-)

  • Grew up in New Orleans and my father was a great cook. His meatballs were to die for and he did the same as you raw into the "red gravy" only difference in ingredients is the Romano cheese added to the seasoned bread crumbs. I sure miss pappa Joe and his Sunday "gravy"!!

  • @jcrefasi1 Awwwww (((hug)))

  • @PrincessDiana161

I've always been obsessed on tryin to make the perfect gravy, now i've finally found the answer, all the other videos pale in comparison to this recipe great job Diana !!!!!!!

  • OMG the garlic at the beginning of this vid almost made me die and go to heaven. I LOOOOOVE GARLIC.

  • Allow seasonings to cook on top before incorporating them!

  • My meatballs are better than mama lachinos!

  • Diana,I fry my meatballs and add red burgandy wine to the crockpot! Withe the rue!

  • Some really good advice about setting the braised meat to cool to room temperature before adding it to the gravy. Is it best to use pork chops and veal shanks with the beef instead of the sausage though?

  • @ewhi1 Pork chops is fine...but I dont buy or eat veal.

  • great job, personally i find if you add the basil when the sauce is done it makes much more of a difference...

  • I love your video!! You seem to have a fun personality!

  • I have such fond memories, my grandmother came from italy to ny and she used to use a tea cup to ladle the gravy over the pasta ; )

  • I bet this broad gets fun after a half bottle of vino

  • @boogiechillen123 you'd win that bet LOL

  • let me guess....staten island. no? bensonhurst?

  • Mmmmm looks good. I'm gonna have to try that sauce. I usually just get the store brand traditional spaghetti sauce and then add extra seasonings to taste. But I'll try it your way....at-least once! LOL For my meatballs I roll them then bake them in a muffin tin 15-20 minuets. let them cool while the sauce is simmering, and then put them in with about 20-30 minuets left.

  • Just buy peeled, crushed tomatoes. It's easier than mashing.

  • hey princess diana when u get fresh basil cut the bottom part of the leafs and put them in a vase with water but clean the water like occasionally like once a day that way it keeps fresh longer

  • oh my god....heaven

  • Alright! This is the real deal! Thanks for the instruction and for the straight talkin'! LOL!!

  • I can't wait to try this!! I use the same but do it all wrong. I add the meat hot, bake the meatballs, I'm a real mess. Thank you for this!! Love the way you and your husband joke around!! God Bless. <3

  • Can't wait to try this. I use the same ingredients but I do it all wrong!! I add the meat hot, bake the meatballs, I'm a real mess!! Thanks so much for this!! Love your videos and the way you and your husband get along!! God bless!! <3

  • BTW, I like em strong enough to stand up to a good ribbing too.

  • @fstwrtr I could get through the day without a good giggle...this broad wants to say thanks & (((hug)))

  • This broad is a real card!!

  • @fstwrtr I love being called a broad! Makes me feel like i could kick your ass LOL

  • @fstwrtr yeah toots, it's all in how you "feel"...now go get me drink

  • great video princess diana :)

  • not to be a ball buster, but in one episode you call it gravy and in another you call it sauce,i could care less whats it's called as long as you call me when it's on the table.

  • @TheVictor1963 In one i put meat and in the other I dont...that's the difference :)

  • @PrincessDiana161 Hell, I don't care what y'all call it, it just looks damn good. I can almost smell it from here, YUMMY!

  • I have made this recipe several times and it is delicious, esp. the second day!!

  • @75melis I agree...always better left over (((hug)))

  • My family has always called it gravy and I will continue to pass on the tradition to my children as well :)

  • I loved this video and I loved how the couple was playfully "arguing" back and forth! This video is truly a instant classic in my opinion,100% real pure Italian!!! Loved it!!! Thanks for sharing and your a great cook!!!

  • "Gravy" is northeast U.S. Italian-American slang, big deal. Of course when people don't know what they're talking about they get hysterical over a two-cent issue...and what are you doing talking about authentic Italian with nothing but Chickenfoot and Timbaland videos on your channel?

  • @AppleTecFan BRAVO!!! (((hug)))

  • and she even used dry basil.... freaking gross...

  • @hobokel2003 seriously??? dried herbs have been used for centuries...get over it

  • No real italian calls sauce gravy and anyone who calls it "gravy" should be dismissed as a fraud and fake. Do you really think that gravy is an italian word? Have you ever even been to italy??? i mean really....

  • my moms is better

  • Great video diana :) I tried making the meatballs and cooking in the sauce but they turned to mush. so now I just bake them first. My mother in law taught me how to make her gravy but I think she still has her own 'secret ingredients'. lol

  • @dreamspell22 LOL we ALL have our own lil secrets we never give out...you'll have yours too :)

  • @PrincessDiana161 YES I agree lol .. I made my gravy today and have just started teaching my 7 year old how it's done. :) I'll be checking out more of your video's soon. I LOVE to cook. :)

  • Folks who didn't grow on on mom and gramma's Sunday sauce lived lesser childhoods than I did.

I just might make sauce --er-- gravy tonight, now! :)

  • wow didnt know you could drop the meatballs in raw. awesome! i hate that crunchy pan fried meatball too. awesome vid, i'm gonna try!

  • But, but, but, stupid sausage jokes rule!

  • love it molto italiano!!

  • found this by accident! love it! lol at Godfather music. Terrific video.

  • OMG! This is my first exposure to PrincessDiana161. YOU ARE GREAT! From the Godfather theme in the background, long fake nails, padded shoulders, funny comments to your hubby and your overall 'tude - you should be on FoodNetwork! What the hell is wrong with those FoodNetwork producers??

Loved your version of Sunday Gravy and I bow to your video awesome-ness!

  • I don't know why I never thought of letting the meat cook in the gravy for several hours. I think I've rushed the process in the past. Love this video...my official go-to chick for great Italian. Bravo!

  • Ok, now I understand. Thank you so much! I may not be able to find the roulade type meats...what are they called again?

  • brajoles (sp)

  • Great video! I love this dish....I cook with baby back ribs which adds a real rich flavor to the gravy. And thanks for the tip about meatballs...I'll try putting them in raw next time.

  • Thats right here in NYC we had gravy-not sause, maccaroni, no pasta we ate like peasants now our peasant food is all the rage with the yuppies. And measuring ingredients when cooking! what are ya kiddin me! Well anyway thats my story and Im sticking to it. God bless all Italians.

  • North End of Boston Too ! Bless Paisani

  • I put the tomatoes in the blender a bit & do the garlic & oil first as well. Fry the meatballs, then put in then the suasage and love pork in the gravy, come so tender yum . My best is rigatoni w/ricott

  • Thank you SO much for posting this. Not only did it make me tear up a bit thinking of my mom and grandmother, but it also helped fill in a few holes that were missing in the recipe my mom left for me bf she passed. Like you, she and my gma cooked without measuring. Also, I think it helped me solve my meatball problem as they were always turning into glorified hamburgers. Great stuff!

  • Ha ha! You guys are great! Love your interactions!

  • 4 to 5 hours at a simmer? or slightly boiling?

  • Diana, do you add any grated cheese to your meatballs? Your sauce looks delicious.

  • No I usually dont... but you can if you like :)

  • Thank you so much for the sweet comment!

    (((HUG)))

  • BEAUTIFUL!!

  • Great video. I don't use oregano in my sauce either, not a fan. Thats for pizza. Sorry to say, its sauce. Here in Italia, u call it sugo which translates into sauce in english. Gravy is brown.

  • Very enjoyable vid

  • Comment removed

  • She IS Italian, you know

  • Ah, the memories this recipe brought back

  • Diana your gravy recipe is amazing. Cheers from Chicago & thank you. I found it very helpfull.

  • You two are a riot. I'm with you on not browning the meatballs first. They taste better when they cook in the sauce. I also add milk, but one trick that I've heard my Nana did is soak a piece of bread in milk. Then, squeeze it out, chop it up small, and add it to the meat.

  • Your Nana is so right... I didn't have any bread crumbs for my meatballs once and used wheat bread and they were soooo good.

  • I belive Diana said she is Latina not Italian, but whatever he is she cooks great!

  • I think its better to sear your meat in the same pan you make the sauce in. Put the meat aside and then make your sauce.

Theres no need for an extra pan to be used.

  • Different strokes

  • YOUR GREAT !

  • Lady I love your style!!!!!!

  • Do you ever drop an egg in there? Oh my gosh...To die for!!!

  • i have had sunday gravy OMG its soooo good my cousins husband is italian and he made this for us i really liked it alot

  • I would like to see more ass time!

  • I so want to dine at your house EVERYDAY!!

  • I am going to attempt your meatballs tomorrow they look like an all day project. YUM!

  • Sorry I agree with Pippy. Never put the meatballs in raw. I learned from my italian parents when I was 7 & I never put in raw meatballs. Love you Pricess Di, but no raw meat.

  • Your right.

  • love the Italian attitude reminds me of my mom .... gravey looks great

  • It is so hard to get veal for meatballs anymore!

  • I like Diana! I do not measure! In my meatballs, I add 2 eggs, parmesan cheese, basil, seasoned salt, pepper, marjoram, one large super chopped onion, parsley, a little milk. I fry my meatballs in 2 and a half tbs olive oil!

  • I fry my meatballs and add the juice to the crockpot! Delicious!

  • This is funny, because here in Italy, we never eat this. The Italian-Americans invented it.

  • right that is why we are 'italian-American'

    you jotha-fre-gotha

  • what is a "jotha-fre-gotha"???

but here in Italy we eat octopus, spaghetti alle vongole, and a lot of good thing that you guys, i'm sure, never eat.

  • Ragu Napoletana usually is made from a single piece of meat, correct? I've studied regional Italian cuisine for over four years now, and I know that the most prominent sources of Italian-American cuisine hails from the provinces of Campania, Rome, Calabria, Abruzzo and Sicily. Not to be excluded are the fashionable cooking styles of Florence, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Venice and Le Marche. Each of these regional styles have contributed a signature dish to the Italian-American repertoire.

  • Yeah, it comes from the region where most Italians emigrated to America.

The Neapolitan Ragù is made with beef, sometimes you can add pork...

  • It's also my understanding that in Italian neighborhoods throughout the United States, the Sunday Gravy adaptation of Ragu Napoletana is usually made using braciole as the main flavor component. This term would be deemed incorrect in Italy, since the proper name for cutlets of beef rolled around a filling would be involtini di manzo. Braciole usually refer to pork chops, while a braciolone would specify a pork loin that id butterflied, pounded thin and encasing some sort of stuffing, no?

  • As for the meatballs, I am made aware that they are not meant to be incorporated in the classic Neapolitan Ragu except for certain baked pastas like lasagne or baked ziti (alla sorrentina). It is then that they are formed no larger than a small grape and fried without being cooked in ragu. Whenever they feature in an Italian kitchen, meatballs (polpette) are usually either pan-fried or braised in wine or broth with vegetables.

  • True

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been searching for the perfect Sunday Gravy recipe, and no one in my family ever taught me the proper way to make it. So, that you so much for sharing this and posting it. God Bless!

  • (((HUGS)))

  • I made this and it was absolutely awesome! Thank you so very much. I fried my meatballs though. ;-)

  • I dont eat pork ant tips you can give me also with the lasanga with the recotta

  • Your a hoot! hehe my husband says your the spitting image of his aunt. It took a while for my MIL to give me her gravy recipe. which is somewhat similar to how you do it but she adds grated parmesan to her sauce. red pepper is big here too. bracole is delicious. made some today for my gravy. Thanks for the video! enjoyed it.

  • Bravo!!! Great job!!! Nice Video. That Gravy looks "Yummy!!!!" Your "Awsome" Diana Thanks for making such a Wonderful Video for everyone to enjoy, Daniel NYC, Bleecker Street

  • Your kitchen looks like a dream many peeps on you tube have been doing house tours would you consider doing this? Thanks for the cooking videos better than watching TV .

  • I don't think Frankie would go for that :(

  • it reminds me of my granny's tomato sauce meatballs XD i'll ask her to make me some.

next time i'll make ragù, i'll try using peeled tomatoes instead of chopped ones. it might taste better :)

  • It's basically an Italian-American bastardized version of Ragu alla Napoletana. It might taste good, but it's not Italian food.

  • Remember to buy the prevacid- you'll need it. Anything with tomatoes becomes very acidic when it's cooked too long. Nothing needs to be cooked for 3-4 hours.

  • Even though there might be some truth to what you said, some might disagree with you. even still Ragu comes from the North and Gravy either originated in Sicily or in Brooklyn.

  • Your so cute! I love you! Italiano donne sei molto sensuale!!

  • "Sei molto carina! Ti voglio bene!Una donna italiana che molto sensuale!!"

  • I'm not a pork eater(i know, and i have italian in me) but Mike is. He saw this video and his mouth was watering. He said you could cook for him anytime!

  • My Italian mom cooks her meatballs in the gravy like you do!!! She taught me how to make meatballs from a recipe that her Italian mama taught her! Love your videos!!!

  • As long as you cook the gravy for hours the meatballs are sue to cook through, glad you liked the vid!

    (((HUGS)))

  • I love any Italian food. I make an awesome bruchetta!!! Yummy yum yum! Thanks for the comments and adding me on your myspace!!! (((HUGS TO YOU!)))

  • I fry my meatballs before I put them in the sauce, is that OK or not?

  • Sure it is. I just find that I like it this way better. But I do sometimes fry them as well

  • Thank you for the great video. We have the same tastes in cooking! I made Sunday gravy about five years ago, but it didn't come out too good.

One question for you: did you make the bracciole yourself, or did you buy it prepared from a butcher? I'm afraid to try making the bracciole myself. If I could get it ready made, I'd be willing to give this another shot!

  • I buy them prepared from my local butcher, sometimes the market has them too.

  • I love u girl...u are so funny and such a natural! Can't wait to see some more...yummmmmmy!
