  • I bow and walk away from you backwards.

  • you might also like this: irene sky - into the ocean

  • @evil she's addressing a one night stand. The reason for the "hallelujah" is referenced. He played it for her (cohen, the original). She's hearing it over and over in her head now that he never called her back.

That's my take on it at least

  • Predictable pretentious shite.

  • @TheBudhistpunk take your hand out of sid vicious' arse and grow out of the 70s

  • Now and always one of my favorite songs. It's...

    Redemption.

  • How can anyone dislike this song? <3

  • I like the spaghetti western riffs.

  • love this song!

  • I dig the middle class lost girl persona. This is the girl all the nerd guys crush on.

  • love this song, but i always laugh when she randomly starts playing with a yo yo and totally fails...

  • production in it is shit. It swings between overproduction and underproduction every few syllables.

I really want to like this song bu find myself hating it

  • @ppetepetepetepete Ass face

  • Someone tell me what this song is about in plain terms. Who is she addressing and what is she telling them?

It sounds like she's recounting an old relationship that she's not proud of but suddenly starts going "hurray" in a way with religious overtones.

And I don't want typical internet dork "omg if u dnt knw thn r u stupid" or something. If you say that then you don't know either and you're a marketer's dream of pretentious and suggestible.

  • @EvilStreaks i think i remember watching an interview where she says it's about a book she read once. and this girl has sex with a guy while the "original leonard cohen" version of Hallelujah is playing. i'm pretty sure that's basically what it's about :P

  • @EvilStreaks

I heard that she once had a boyfriend who was religious (AKA "I know we all have a cross to bear and I want to show it to you" is a line in the song) but she wasn't and didn't want to be religious but he basically forced her I guess (AKA the line in the song "and I'll carry/drag you if I have to").

So from that standpoint the song makes a lot more sense, and I think she's bitter about it because her songs have a lot of "I dislike religion" messages plus she said she'll never forget

  • She has kinda "Sophie Marceau" beauty.

Amazing voice!!!...oh shit I'm in love again, hate you youtube!

  • Top played song in my iTunes

  • Creative visuals!

  • Pretty girl, great

  • PS – just bought the album on the strength of this video

  • "The original Leonard Cohen version" -- YES!

  • i want her jacket

  • sounds a bit like dido - but less emotional

  • This song is...................AWESOME!!! XD

  • Comment removed

  • @exhalethepast yes i have noticed that. perhaps thats because she has an untrained voice. i dont think it really diminishes the strength of the song though

  • its wrong how people like miley cyrus and justin beiber can have an album instantly and she needs her fans to fund her second ablum, what has out world come to?

  • @alicethe8 : She didn't need fans to fund her album, that's the way she chose to release it, because any record label that wanted to sign her also wanted to influence her writing style and image. Emmy is the type of artist who values her artistic expression over all else, which is why I respect her more than some of my favourite artists ever haha :)

  • emmy is better than Miley Cyrus

  • If there's one thing I will not tolerate; its a woman who doesn't know how to use a yoyo. Dislike.

  • Can I start by saying fuck you vevo. And finish by saying i love Vevo now that everyone seems to be typing that comment. I want to be original like Emmy here, so I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say men who have sex with women are gay. Thumbs up if you agree!

  • 16 people haven't found their first love.

  • Please come back to Hong kong Emma! we STILL miss you so much!

  • come to the U.S for a show! Preferrably Chicago!

  • I remember seeing her perform this in a tiny bar in Glasgow a few years ago. Stuck in my mind ever since.

  • Really enjoy the sound of this song.

  • love this<3

  • I like it. It's kinda funny, the music has a Sergio Leone soundtrack feel to it.

  • Great!

  • Now, I have nothing against this "Emmy The Great" person. I'm just stating my own unbiased observation.

Take the comment box down, don't take the comment box down, I really don't care. Do whatever it is that you want. You don't need anyone to tell you what to do. Especially since you presume that I am just an ignorant little infant who don't know any better. Do have a complete disregard over whatever it is I just stated. I am of complete irrelevance of your adult ways..puh-lizz =.=

  • @biggyshack "acquired by me legally"? jesus. I dont need this shit. you're blocked.

  • @ferrysemifinalist Don't worry dude, I'm giving him hell for it. His music sucks. :)) He doesn't know English very well and he reeks of 1920's racist and homophobic comebacks.

  • @biggyshack You're capitalist swine. You're the only bigot around here, you hypocritical douche. Screw you.

  • @biggyshack Indeed! Power to the almighty VEVO, the globalisation of capatilism and vast economic discrimination at the expense of our basic rights! (Fuckwit)

  • @biggyshack

This is Youtube, people try to find videos like this on youtube. Why don´t you just watch television?

  • That's my name! :D

  • she's so beautiful :)

  • Can someone tell me how to make the sounds from :38 and on? I've toyed with a few different programs and can't create anything close to it--it sounds so western showdownish, it's fantastic and one of my favourite parts of this song.

  • She's got an amazing singing voice, she's musically gifted, can play an instrument, writes her own songs, writes clever lyrics... Oh and she's got natural beauty. Basically she's the opposite of what it takes to be popular these days, because all the crap female acts in the charts have none of those traits that Emmy has.

  • @PredatorFilmsInc shes a plain jane compared to them pop stars

  • @PredatorFilmsInc there's nothing to be elitist about with music! emmy the great is wonderful but everyone's into something different. also you might want to reconsider as Adele's new album is no1 on itunes :)

  • @necessaryonabicycle : I like quite a lot of what gets into the charts, just the majority is recycled, soul-less, made by numbers trash. Adele I find kinda annoying to be honest, don't like her music at all, but I admit she's got a great soulful voice.

  • @PredatorFilmsInc

Really? Hmm...what huge contribution to the music industry did she induced, that makes her deserving of naming herself with such a distinguished epithet?

    Seriously though, Emmy The Great?

  • @biggyshack Im hosting this video out of respect for emmy n people who want to watch this. I cant endure endless email updates on some kid ranting about the merits of celebrity, mainstream, etc. either grow up or shut up or I'll shut this whole comment box down.

  • @ferrysemifinalist : She knows very well that you uploaded this, she obviously has no problem with it if you haven't had any complaints

  • @PredatorFilmsInc man, I made this video. she asked me to do it. we're friends. n unlike "mainstream" artists we didnt have much money, she doesnt even have a youtube channel, etc. I hosted this on my personal channel for her. from 200 summin comments I never cared about positive or negative comments. but I get an email update for every comment so I cant have "rants"!! that dude was posting endless comments in minutes. my phone was going f'in crazy

  • @ferrysemifinalist : Oh wow that's so cool, so glad you did, wouldn't have discovered her otherwise :)

  • @biggyshack : Emmy the Great was some satirical name she used in uni, people who follow her music or read her Wikipedia/whatever will know that hahaha

  • @biggyshack jesus motherfucking christ. it's not like being william the conquerer or ivan the terrible

it's a fucking modest folk-pop act, i doubt she has insane delusions of grandeur.

  • who cares about the video..? i just want to see her and hear her voice... make me feel peacefull..

  • the idea of the boxes is really cool.

  • so obsessed with this song.

  • Interesting enough ... I suppose.

  • damn she pretty

  • @RoughshodElm for real

  • CHINESE! with english accent?!?!?!?! since 2005Emmy The Great

  • @Ziegour lots of Chinese people have English accents because often they are, infact, acctually English..

  • @Ziegour yeah... she moved to england when she was 12 and her fatther was english but mother was chinese

  • To think her ambition was to be a back-up singer. She's captivated me with her voice, her lyrics, her shifting eyes to make sure she doesn't miss a queue... I can't even express how taken I am with her.

  • michael j fox visited this video 14 times

  • I <3 Emmy :P

  • It's depressing that there's not music like this in the charts. Rap/Hip Hop/Pop = crap,

  • @Inthemoodfor2046 thank you!

  • @Inthemoodfor2046

There is good rap and hip-hop out there. Just not much in the charts. The masses are idiots.

  • @Inthemoodfor2046 calling pop music crap is one of the most uneducated, ignorant statements i've ever heard...pop isn't just katy perry, kesha and lady gaga. pop is the beatles.....respect it

  • @RyanKellyVideo Are you seriously comparing The Beatles and Lady Gaga? The Beatles are rock, not pop. Mainstream music doesn't come close to the beatles or emmy the great.

  • @McQueen4ever no i'm not comparing the two..... pop music stretches more than 60 years back. times change and so does the music. is rock music the same as it was in the 60's? no, it isn't. and sure, the beatles had an influence on rock music, and in their later, more psychadelic albums, could be considered a part of rock music. but, up until revolver was released, the beatles were pop artists, creating pop tunes that everyone could sing along to. please educate yourself in musical genealogy.

  • @RyanKellyVideo uh yeah that's like saying "the dodos were alternative until the second album. now they're indie." ... even though you probably don't understand that analogy.

  • @McQueen4ever no it's not. that's a really bad analogy. i do understand the analogy, but once again you don't know what you're talking about. indie is not a genre. it has to do with their record label and not their musical style..

i don't listen to the dodos enough to argue whether or not they can be considered independent artists, but i'll let you know one thing. an artist can be considered alternative rock and indie at the same time....simply because indie is not a genre. please stop replying

  • @RyanKellyVideo Indie not a genre? HA! Maybe you should think before you type...

  • @McQueen4ever indie is a record label affiliation, meaning independent. a genre is a label for the musical style itself, and in no way does indie represent that. over time, stupid kids who think it's "cool" to listen to underground music used the term indie to describe music that their peers have never heard of, covering alt-rock, electropop, british/swedish pop music, etc.... please stop arguing. just accept the fact that you are wrong. but it's okay, i forgive you.

  • @RyanKellyVideo Indie (or independent) music is music that is released on smaller labels that operate independently from the mainstream music business. But more often "indie" refers to a specific genre of contemporary music that is based on combining aesthetics of classic rock, punk, garage and art rock. Please stop trying to tell me I'm wrong because I'm not.

  • @McQueen4ever i understand that they're released on smaller labels but the problem is that people abuse the term. mgmt is considered one of the most popular "indie" bands. and they're signed to columbia records. that is NOT a small record label. and also combining aesthetics of classic rock would be meaningless. "classic rock includes 60's, 70's, and 80's rock music.which includes psychadelic, hard, progressive, and much more that all sound significantly different. stop digging your hole deeper.

  • @RyanKellyVideo Calling someone you don't know uneducated isn't ignorant? And then being patronizing with the ...respct it. NO i think not @RyanKellyVideo get over yourself!

  • @RyanKellyVideo I don't need to be told what is and isn't pop music thank you, you patronizing so and so. I know what it is. And telling me to respect it, what an arrogant mother&*&*868 you must be.

  • simply lovely, looking forward to the next album,

  • 176,000 views - We're getting there Emmy!

  • Terrific, simply loved it!!!

  • Beautiful voice! Finally someone...

  • titus, payts gypn bah?

  • @freshsaging are u gay??

  • @monket654321 yawa ka

  • @freshsaging are u gay??

  • She sounds great on Falling off the lavender bridge. Her voice is gorgeous.

  • Listened to this stoned the other day...the drums at the end were sending me west :(

Great song though, found out about it from Adam's big mixtape :) Loving the show.

  • cool

  • i love her voice but sometimes it sounds like shes singing whilst suffering through a cold

  • I liked the song, but was getting a little bored... then 1:36 happened. Then it gradually got slower and too hallelujah-y... but then the drive before the ending happened. I like the variety! This song played live would do all kinds of things to me.

  • the guy in the red top is really fit(:

  • Saw her live last year. She played well and proved herself to be quite witty.

    Highly recommended.

  • this is basically just brilliant

  • I really don't like the way it just ends on "first love". but apart from that the song is perfect

  • She's a great song writer and a brilliant performer, but her yo-yoing is frankly appalling.

  • i just found out about her.... fucking awesome.

  • Everything from the music to her voice to the lyrics, everything about her is SOOOOOOOOO fucking good.

  • such a good song seriously, but look at that fucking hipster in the end with his little ironic mini-accordian! hahaha

  • THIS is music

  • I've just discovered her. Really great!!

  • class video, epic tune to me.

  • such a sweet calm voice, witty lyrics, and she is beautiful, xx love emmy ! xx

  • I reckon the whole point of the video clip is to convey part of her humour... she's meant to be very dry, cynical and apathetic when joking so I'd say this is why she made the video this way. Plus it kind of juxtaposes the lyrics. I remember the first time I watched this I was annoyed because it wasn't what I expected, like a slap in the face... but you come to like it for being that way.

  • @KyleKash91 The juxtaposition of the images is discordant because the song is about remembering, reconstructing, obsessing with the past but never being able to smooth over the pain.

  • i can't believe PixelToy supported her in HK, i wish Emmy could have brought them over here.

  • @7ickM3 Ah, but what sets this woman apart is that her lyrics are genius.

  • I've totally fallen in love with this woman. Amazing.

  • vaya puteta.. no m'havia plantejat mai l'spelling d'aleluia en anglès.. xD

  • hurrah for low production costs!

  • I wish that I never met you the day, you said I have a room I have music to play, I have room, let me show you the way; I wish that I´d never come..so catchy :)

  • but it goes about the song hallelujah by leonard cohen

  • @jiniton; disagree.

  • Oh, that must have been a joke, right? It's Hallelujah, "the original leonard cohen version", as she sings.

  • Seriously? That was a cheeky ode to the infamous song, "Hallelujah", by Leonard Cohen.

  • Very good video. :) Love that simpliness, it's kind of art. And the song fits perfectly in my situation.

  • lllllllllooooooooooooooovvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllyyyyyyyyy and pretty

  • Reminds me of Aimee Mann, great lyrics, great stuff!!

  • electro but acosutic at the same time! love her!

  • she's not full chinese is she? she's amazinggggg hong kong ftw

  • straaange, the beginning makes me think of "i remember" by damien rice, and not just because of the "i remember how we met".

    excellent song, btw.

  • I honestly don't really care what she looks like when she sings. Her output is much better than anything that is on the radio

  • i like female singer who can play Guitar while they're sing a song. That's great

  • Me too. :)

Babable, I just wanted to let you know that your comment bothers me a bit because it gives the notion that most female singers can't play the guitar.

  • i can"t say anything.She is the geat singer

  • normaly i don´t like female voices, or let´s say i prefer male voices. but she is really great. i think i´ll have to buy some of her music.

  • i saw emmy live earlier this year. shes brilliant :)

  • first saw her on channel m (sky 203)...now I can't stop listening.

  • This is excellent. She's beautiful too.

  • shes a cuuuuuuute girl with goood music! greetings and much love from germany!

  • she is only quoting because she is singing about a story that this guy wrote and that song must be a key factor in the story

  • Of course she doesn't HAVE to quote another song and I'm sure she knows that! She is playing with the themes in Hallelujah, explaining what influence it had on her etc. It's also pretty funny: "The original Leonard Cohen version" - that made me laugh, I think she's poking fun at people who rail against any of the covers of the song and think they're sophisticated for preferring Cohen's versiom, whilst also agreeing that his version's best. I really like her and this song.

  • You are soooo right!

  • I agree with most of what you say but I don't think the line about it being the 'original Leonard Cohen version' is making any particular point or joke, i think it's just quite direct narative, it's just what happened, that was the version that was playing, and it's significant just because i guess there are so many versions and the original has a particular feel to it and that's important to the story. that's how i take it anyway.

  • Yes that could be right too! I just thought it would be typical of her to gently poke fun, because in another of her songs she mocks someone (a tiny bit) for worshipping Bob Dylan. Plus she is funny. I heard that once she told a journo that her DJ name was DJ Emmyroids.

  • @xxCorinnaxx i think Jeff Buckly did the best version, it really brings a tear to my eye :')

  • Comment removed

  • .. I think you mean Emma-Lee Moss? Emmylou Harris is a singer who is much older, still with an amazing voice though. Easy mistake to make.

  • she's a really good singer but I don't know why she had to quote another song like that. it makes her seem derivative and she certainly doesn't need to reference a popular song to get people to listen to her music--it's already very good.

  • I wouldn't say it made her seem derivative. All she has done is quote someone elses song, used it as a background. Her music is very good and i think that if anything, this has made her seem more original because she has taken something and made something new.

  • I think it strikes me that way because some band like Fall Out Boy or Panic a thte Disco quoted the same song.

  • I see what you mean, but it's a very popular song that has been referenced by more artists than Emmy and Fall Out Boy.

  • the difference between Emmy and those other two...is Emmy has talent.

  • she are from where,,,but her face totally pan asian
