There were disputes in elections but there were elections. Comparing to S Korea and Taiwan at that time, SV had more freedom and much more freedom comparing to current situation in Vietnam
Since VN opened door several veterans of NVN learned that they were deceived by their party that they fought for independence. Today they know that US just wanted to stop communist expansion, not to occupy VN. Now they want multi party system because they are victims of one party system
That was the time communists believed in strategy of Third International: communists would take over all third world nations to cut off sources of raw materials, markets from capitalist countries to weaken them. Then capitalist countries including USA would be conquered by Soviet bloc.

I am especially fond of the Vietnam Vets,to me,they are the bravest of the brave and toughest of the tough. They fought horrific conditions,idiotic rules of engagement and suffered from foolish leaders. Remember,you can oppose the war and still support the troops. The Vietnam veterans deserve our love and respect..they are true heroes!
