@TheOther4815 if it's just a choice between low and high. Then I think you've got to have high because i think people with low self-esteem sometimes get taken advantage of.
This has nothing to do with believing in God or not. I believe as an atheist that having a high self esteem has definitely a positive impact in one's life. However, self esteem is not always one's choice (there are external factors that strongly affects it), and any non-douchebag human being can understand that. By the way I grew up in a evangelical christian home and I remember NOTHING in their theology regarding this other than make you feel like a piece of shit for being a sinner.
It's better to have high self esteem, of course, but what does that have to do with theism. I know both theists and atheists with low and high self-esteem. As an atheist, I can only speak for myself, but my self-esteem flows from my everyday experiences, fatherhood, being good at my job, winning an occasional game, or losing one. Also, although I generally feel good about myself, those feelings fluctuate - like if I do something wrong or hurt someone's feelings. That temporarily lowers it.
@reasonablyabsurd Thats a common question, And im gonna answer that for you. The truth is in the begining. Before the Fall of Man everything was perfect. But when we didnt listen to GOD and ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. That created evil. We created EVIL for ourselves Satan decieved us. This world is temporary. Jesus came to die for our sins to COMPENSATE US with ETERNAL LIFE for what Adam and Eve did. We shouldnt have to suffer for them, So things that happen here r our doing
@Pontus900 he's taking axioms of general living and presenting them as things that need to be explained more than by what is known by intuition.. a common retarded argument for god saying that because you cant fully explain/prove these intuitive things... they must have been put there by none other than god... because how else would you explain things like feeling happy is better than feeling sad
@Pontus900 As an atheist I have no mythical claim telling me I'm a sinner, someone unworthy who needs to be redeemed by accepting an imaginary friend, this allows me a better self esteem than I could have if I did believe.
You need them both. Low self-esteem you need for making yourself a better person and improve, and by that, getting even higher self-esteem. And it's obvious what you need high self-esteem for, asking a girl out etc
But if you choose, high self-esteem would be the best. I say this, because you made me choose, I'm not supporting my own answer, like I said, you need them both. If everyone had high self-esteem, the world would be pretty self-righteous, that's better then the world being depressed.
"Is it better ..." in order to what? The question is unfinished, and to me therefore meaningless. For instance. It's better to eat candy than salad, in order to get in a good mood. But. It's better to eat salad than candy, in order to be healthy. What is the goal you have in mind? High and low self-esteem satisfies different goals. Nothing is neither good nor bad in of itself.
self esteem found in any religion but your own would surely be passed off as arrogance. remove religion, however, and they will become humbled by everything they don't know. and it's probably true to say that many doors must be walked through to regain that same confidence. as a theist the prospect of that is a scary thing but as hitchens would say ~ take the risk of thinking for yourself, much more happiness, truth, beauty and wisdom will come to you that way.
Are u being serious right now asking this question...? Study psychology and live in a dorm and form relationships with as many people as possible. Of course high self esteem is better than low self esteem, are you retarded....? Seriously, are you slow? Simple?
Self-esteem is good when it accurately reflects the estimation of abilities or worth for a given task.
The mismatch of esteem or estimation is the problem. It can be positive or negative
One can know a few spanish words, simple sentence structure, and getting simple points across for rudimentary commication. Someone with esteem that is too high will think they can translate for court proceeding (unrealistic), someone with too low won't use it at all when they need to (self-edprivation)
Higer self esteem...duhhh! How do I know? Cuz when one has low esteem they make bad choices and can even become depressed/suicidal. There are countless cases to use as evidence. Why r asking this?
So many questions for us. I would say a higher level of self esteem is probably healthier than high or low, but I'm not a psychologist.
As this seems to be a loaded question from a Christian perspective... My conclusion is based on the premise that there are no gods. We are then left with man and his relationship with our fellow man. I have only one avenue and that is that esteem is part of the human experience. I'd love to hear why you've asked.

Quick question for shallow theist: if god is both omniscient and omnipotent, how can you explain evil and suffering in the world?

eh... low selfesteem hurts your own progress, so of course it is bad.
How is this related to atheism again

By the silly smirk on your face, you seem to have an opinion onthe matter. So what is it?
Oh, don't forget to provide evidence.

Since religion destroys self esteem, and you need high self esteem to survive, I'd say it's better to have high self esteem.

I prefer higher self-esteem. It is not a conclusion, it is an observation.
