  • @jaysen71

    I love that station.

  • Thanks for sharing this outstanding 80's Gem.

    *10*/Fav

  • no audio? Where is it, what happened?

  • Cool !! Big time remind's me of growing up in the 80's; We have a good radio station called "93.9 The River" that play's older "cutting edge" music from the 80's & 90's !! Luv it !! The station also play's newer "adult alternative" stuff. They serve the Detroit/ Windsor market ; their sister station is sweet also for newer alternative music..89 X.

  • this song just screams 80s movies love it

  • doesn't he look a lot like Rick Moranis ?

  • @dorothyisabutterfly He really does!

  • People have no clue how talented Bruce Cockburn is..

  • @mevlana69 Yes for sure, the right energy. Bnl was a 9, bruce is a 10

  • i prefer bnl.... just sayin!

  • One word can describe a song like this, Wow.

  • a national treasure, its just that simple

  • when Stevie Ray Vaughn died, Eddie Van Halen got this question from a Rolling Stone interviewer.

Interviewer: “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?”

Eddie Van Halen: “I don’t know, why don’t you ask Bruce Cockburn.”

  • @IamDayoldHate1 I think this quote may be misattributed. I think the story you are thinking of is actually when Jimi Hendrix was asked by a reporter "How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world"? and he responded: "I don't know, why don't you ask Phil Keaggy?". At least that was how I heard it, but maybe that is a myth as well ;P

  • @lolspeakable this one is untrue as well. there is little chance hendrix would have known who keaggy was at the time, but im sure he would have marveled at his talent.

  • @IamDayoldHate1 an entirely apocyphal story. it never happened. an internet meme. but a nice compliment nonetheless...

  • A Cold War love story.

  • Wonderful song! As for the quality or theme of the video, hey it was the Eighties!

  • What an awesome song and what a shitty video.

  • good song. alot of artists ending up covering this song in their live shows.

  • Yay Canada and Yay good music!!!!!

  • We live in dangerous times amigos. Open your eyes. It's time to wake up and fight. But first, we must make love then we must make war on the new world order. :)

  • beautiful lyrics, vibrant groove, autentic singing....

  • Damn, music was so good in the 80s. Why does it suck so much now?

  • Don't know that all music sucks now but I agree, music in the 80s was THE BEST. Memories of the 80s and the music that shaped my life are still active all the time. Clothes have changed, places have changed, people have gone away... but the associations with music and those things will never disappear.

  • Nice. I've never seen a video with khaki pants and a fog machine.

  • IF ANYONE SEES THIS COMMENT I WROTE VOTE UP!! (>^.^)> KIRBY KNOWN AS "THE SUPER TUFF PINK STUFF''

  • Hey Leute Such das Stück Sahara Gold Wer kannes Posten?

  • did bnl copy him?

  • @byaane yeah, did a cover, it's actually how i first found cockburn so i don't mind

  • @byaane yes they did copy. an awesome cover though; in my opinion.

  • lol cockburn

  • @manrayer88

    seriously?

  • @manrayer88 Iseewhatyoudidthere.

  • @manrayer88 This is why I hate the internet. But nevertheless, I laughed.

  • this is the lovers in japan of coldplay... but in the 80's

  • It's a song about homosexuality...back in the days this was written homosexuals were extremely brutalized for their lifestyle...love for heterosexuals has never been dangerous, only for homosexuals and even to this day it can still be dangerous for the gay community.

  • @MrSmeeDFN Sorry, calling BULLSHIT on you. This song may have been inclusive of lovers of all and any type and time but there is no way that this is a song about homosexuality. Don't adopt it for your personal use, it's a life song for a ton of us who aren't gay and Bruce never never intended it to be a gay anthem, please. His song "Maybe the Poet" is the closest you'll get from him but even though in the song's chorus uses gay, he also includes male or female gay or free peaceful or disorderly.

  • @MrSmeeDFN

"I was thinking of kids in a schoolyard. I was thinking of my daughter. Sitting there wanting to hold hands with some little boy and looking at a future, looking at the world around them. How different that was when I was a kid when, even though we had air-raid drills, nobody took that seriously that the world would end. You could have hope when I was a kid. And now I think that's very difficult."

"Closer to the Light with Bruce Cockburn" by Paul Zollo, SongTalk, vol.4, issue 2, 1994

  • This is a VERY good song but nostalgia goggles detected. There are artists today that play their own stuff AND read sheet music. A good example of this is Coldplay. They put on good shows AND do all their own stuff. There was good music then as there is good music today.

  • The author of this video does not allow playback on the iPad? Since when, I was watching it yesterday!

  • I love the 80's. He still looks so good

  • Love you Bruce!

  • I betcha Bruce would like a dollar for each of the 320000 hits this video has had. It's to bad artists don't get compensated for this.but, maybe people buy this song on here which helps.

  • @oggmagog I bought this song on iTunes after watching the video.

  • Ah I just thought about this song and oh how I missed it :D

  • love this song

    .....lovers

  • The first time I saw a Chapman Stick in action!

  • Best Canadian ever.

  • I love this song I love this song I love this song...Thanks for putting it up.

  • My word, what a tune this is!

  • This is an excellent song. Saw Bruce perform this at Expo 86. Great concert!

  • I much enjoy the Barenaked Ladies version more.

  • No Fuck you silly rabbit!

  • @mikemar421

You're just an ignorant whore who can't even troll properly. Try harder next time.

  • Right on bruce !, But BNL rocked it !

  • Why is the villain from Who Framed Roger Rabbit playing the chapman stick at 1:22?

  • heard this on KFOG last weekend, great song

  • Bruce Cockburn, The Band, Neil Young I'll take any day. The rest of Canadian music should be buried in the snow.

  • @mikemar421 fuck you

  • @mikemar421

Metric, Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, The Joel Plaskett Emergency, The Tragically Hip

    Yes, FUCK YOU.

  • @mikemar421 You should be buried in the snow.

  • wtf youtube censers comments ........ who make those rules .. gggggessssusssss

  • I always thought Bruce looked like Rick Moranis (honey I shrunk the kids)

  • You gotta kick at the darkness "till" it BLEEDS daylight.

As a song writter I can tell U.... that is such a powerful line.

  • This video is so '80s artsy. Nowadays it would be seen as a satire on pretentious choreography and modern dance. Yeah, it's a comment on the video, not the song. And for those oldies that moan on about how this is real music etc compared to today's stuff, give it a rest. You are clearly out of your element with regards to current innovative artists. We could judge the '80s as being all Tiffany and NKOTB too, and forget about so-called "true" music if you wish.

  • @Shirokinukatsukami Go fuck yourself buddy,,,And your Mother too..

  • @wrxmike123

    Yes. Quite...

  • @mohawkmri it saddens me that the discussion surrounding such a beautiful piece of music is allowed to degenerate into these subjective and weightless rants. It was proven long ago that the arguments which you are expounding hold no water.

What an exquisite piece of popular songwriting.

What an exquisite piece of popular songwriting.

  • Canadians make some of the best rock music

  • @edreese1977 Couldn't agree more. Music is something different to each person. I mean, one minute ill listen to rock is dead by marilyn manson, next minute i might be listening to recognizer by daft punk. Or even Marty O'donnell and his halo score.

All depends on what your feeling like. Like right now, im feeling like going down memory lane. This song is definately on that lane. =)

  • This is way better than the BNL's version.

  • "Gotta kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight". My favourite saying and it's so true ^_^ Thanks for posting this!

  • Cockburn always kind of sucked but, I gotta admit, this is a great number!!!

  • @AllBobsAllTheTime Upon further review "sucked" is too strong a word. Bruce is just a little too whiny at times.

  • Bruce is still the man in a dangerous time

  • This video makes absolutely no sense and i love it!

  • Comment removed

  • rather ... briefly dated - "never" makes it sound like I was out hiding in the bushes LOL

  • a certain gal I never dated dumped me the week after 9/11

years later she includes this track on Bday mix CD

most nurses are hot. ALL midwives are. yay, Brunettes!

  • never heard this song until a radio station played it. great song

  • been trying to find the bnl video of this tune fr the start of there career cant find it ,,grrr

  • WOAH! I thought the barenaked ladies made this song, I'm shocked. This isn't quite as good but I'm happy it was made.

  • whats this song even about? anyone want to explain? :) haha

  • @DGxx07

not really sure, good question - I imagine two Cuban revolutionaries, college students, boy & girl, simultaneously falling madly in love and working desperately to overturn a dictatorial regime - every time they make love could be their last, soldiers could burst in at any moment and drag them off for interrogation and torture -- like George Orwell's (used-to-be) well-known novel 1984 - loving on borrowed time - but if it refers to something specific, I don't know it -

  • @SupernalOne

Bruce said it was actually inspired by seeing a couple of teenagers in a school yard in Canada, but he liked other interpretations.

The BNL version may work better as a single but the original is more than that, it's the opening track to his great album "Stealing Fire", and if you listen to the whole album you'll really appreciate the musical and political themes that the song introduces. Also the audio on this upload is poor, listen to it on a CD as it should be heard.

  • @networkcobbler

thanks, think I will - there's not enough inspiring music out here these days

  • I like the 80s feel better.

  • I'd be hard-pressed to dislike any version of this song; the song itself is too damned important. But Bruce rules in my world. Hell of a musician, hell of a person.

  • PLEEEEEEASE ! POST the Barenaked ladies version of this tune. i love the video. I know they are fighting it. But I simply love it so....... fight the power youtube

  • 23 like the black eyed pease

  • Check out Bruce's guns! He can actually play an instrument, too! This is what stupid young people don't understand. Back in our day, artists actually PLAYED and could even read sheet music. The dancing and stage shows were secondary.

  • @mohawkmri so people 'nowadays' fake their instrument playing? musicians nowadays who arent mainstream are 100x more talented than this guy

  • @MrRoarable If by one hundred times more talented you mean they can use computers to clean up lousy vocals, edit tracks, sample the music of more talented people, use synthesizers to fill in the rest, all whilst lip synching and performing half-assed choreography, then I would agree with you. You don't know what you're talking about, junior.

  • @mohawkmri thats why i said non main stream... im not talking about lady gaga and justin beiber, and i do feel sad that my age is known for 'music' like that... do you really think a band like alexisonfire with one the greatest vocalists and song writers of all time really lip synches and copies music? No i didnt think so... sorry grandpa... Btw i really like the generic 4x4 beat of the 80s, its awesome when this guy makes a 4 chord song then repeats it for 3 min to make his new single

  • @MrRoarable How much of Bruce Cockburn's music do you know, Kid? I just saw him live. His fingers are all over that fretboard... no matter what he's playing... acoustic... electric... a sitar... Bruce's songwriting is second to none. He's in his 60's and his skill has not diminished, his vocals are still astounding, his lyrics are insightful and finely crafted. Sure. I like some of today's bands, but those bands also admire Bruce. He is well respected by the bands you like.

  • @mohawkmri Very true. Now everything is AutoTuned because so-called singers have no talent. Ever notice how most singers these days seem to have this choppy, robotic voice?

  • @mohawkmri that is one of the most ignorant things you could say. there are plenty of artist who have come out since the 21st century who can play/sing/read music phenomenally. of course you must be comparing modern day pop with the pop of the 80's. i agree the music has surely changed, but there are still great artists and poor artists in both respective time periods. clearly you are stuck on pop, and you should open you ears to different styles of music. your ignorance is unbelievable.

  • @SuperHeroBlu Ignorant, eh? Do you know what a Köchel number is? I didn't think so. At any rate, the original point I was trying to make was the difference between music made in the "real age" where you plugged your guitar into an amp and did your best, versus the crap made in the "digital age." In my time, there were no "digital mulligans." Mulligan is a golf term meaning a "do over." Don't attempt to cross wits with me, boy. You're bringing a knife to a gun fight. BTW, try spellcheck.

  • @mohawkmri i fail to see how Köchel number relates to this discussion. i know my golf terms thank you, what makes you think there are digital mulligans nowadays? the artists from the "digital age" that i listen to plug into an amp and play live shows as well, please be more clear with your comparison. trying to demean me does not help your argument.

  • @SuperHeroBlu Nor does trying to demean me help yours, moron. Put the bong down, pin your nametag on, and get to Mickey D's before the manager cans your sorry ass. One of these days, you'll move out of your mom's basement and figure things out.

  • @mohawkmri hahaha so what you are saying is, you cannot come up with a reasonable argument to defend your selective/limited taste in music? that's unfortunate.

also, not that my education or living conditions relate to anything about Bruce Cockburn or music in general, but i am currently living away from home and attending school to achieve a degree in mechanical engineering. hopefully at your age you have amounted to something more than just a sack of overused disses.

  • @mohawkmri lmao i doubt lil wayne or soulja boy even write their own songs xD

  • @199291931 Lil who? Soulja what? You know it, brother! I've tossed a few Rand to gum boot choirs in Cape Town, sipped Jasmine tea listenting to an old lady play her Pipa in Beijing, listened to Zydeco in New Orleans, and got f-ed up listening to the Blues in St. Louis, and the crazy stuff from the '80's is still my favorite. I just don't like Jazz and modern computer ehanced crap. Is that so hard to understand?

  • @mohawkmri HOLY! YOUR RIGHT! HIS GUNS ARE LARGE xD And I love his guitar((SP?)). I may be young, but I understand what your saying! Music back then was the best. And it still is today isnt it? <3 Love this song!

  • @mohawkmri Thats what you think of young people? Geez, how old are you?

  • @tsferg I'm old enough to remember cheering Dad on as he and his fellow firemen hosed down hippies on the 6 o'clock news, but young enough that my pants still belt at the waist and not my nipples (yet).

  • @mohawkmri your Dad probably hosed down Bruce once or twice!

  • @mohawkmri Isn't that special, your dad hosing down people for their beliefs. I'm sure he would have been real useful with the hose in Selma and on the Civil Rights Marches

  • @YouMarsha You do realize you're trying to play the race card with a Native American in a generational discussion about music, don't you? Incidentally, my father was photographed by our local newspaper, during the riots, running from a burning house carrying a black infant while giving it mouth to mouth resuscitation. The child lived, thank God. I'm going to do something else for awhile. Frankly, the stupid people are wearing me down and eroding what little faith I have left in humanity.

  • @mohawkmri What does you being a "native american talking about music" have anything to do with your dad abusing hippies? He did his job as a fireman with the black infant, it has nothing to do with his political beliefs. Not a great leap from using a fire hose on hippies, some of whom were involved in Civil Rights, to using that fire hose as others did on civil rights marchers.

  • @mohawkmri u used to be young -.- oh i gues u were born an old man/woman? n mst smart young ppl dnt like new music ,some songs r descent but stop comparing us to u we were both born in different music eras!

  • @cheapitychopXD Not surprisingly, most people who've known me my whole life have said I was born an old man. I certainly would not compare myself to you. I speak a dead language called English.

  • The BNL version sucks...sounds like a bluegrass song! This version is awesome. 80s forgotten classic!

  • @Kiraly30 The original is a great song for sure, but BNL is nothing to hate on. Every single one of the members from that band is incredible and made a fantastic rendition of the song.

  • Who cares which version is better?A work of art is just that!Shit Leonard Cohen wrote some awesome shit too!Elvis Presley was another artist that was inspired by those before him.Fuck I'm just happy that we had enough sense to keep going forward with music! All music has a place,if we(you)don't like it,don't listen to it!

  • Check out Bruce's guns! That's a Canadian folk singer. The only other folk singer I know that could kick his ass is Ani Di Franco.

  • roxngal ALL YOU AMERICANS think the world wants to emulate you, in actual fact your are loathed! Most countries find americans repulsive ego maniacs. Bruce Cockburn is a Canadian Icon, well deserving a canadian pedestal of excellence! A humanitarian not a warmonger!

  • I can't decide which verse I like better, the first or third. They're both brilliantly written, and open and close out the song perfectly. The middle verse is a little corny.

  • Well, having heard the version by the Barenaked Ladies first and actually not realizing until once the video had started that this was the orginal artist, I was pleasantly surprised. This song is much more soothing in my opinion while the BNL version tends to be more upbeat and happy. There also seems to be much more emphasis on the chorus in the BNL version but overall Cockburn's version seems to fit better with the message of the song.

  • fucking awesome

  • @Aetheilas Yep. Bruce Cockburn, Rush, that "bacon" thats really just sliced ham and Moose for Da U.P.

Lots of good stuff from the land North of the Big Lake ;)

  • Canadian gem

  • @DouglasEdward84 Bruce Cockburn is nothing, and Barenaked Ladies are something. They play good music, it doesn't matter if Steven Page left the band, they're still great. It's my opinion and you can't change it.

  • How many of you who like the Barenaked Ladies version more heard Bruce Cockburn's first? Probably none of you, I can't belive anyone actually likes the Barenaked ladies at all let alone their version of this song.

  • @DouglasEdward84 Well, I knew this one first and I prefer the bnl version by a pretty wide margin. I prefer the acoustic guitar and the upright bass over this more electric sounding version. I also find that the vocals on the bnl version are infinitely better. I give Bruce the props for writing a beautiful song but I think the 'ladies added something to it.

  • somebody should really try and learn the part at 1:47 on guitar and hook it up with us all.

  • I don't remember much from the '80's, but I remember just how frickin' cool this was!

  • @jonok911 No, I was talking about the black guy. I know Bruce is playing the GTR.

  • 2:20, what is he playing?

  • 80s music videos scare me

  • I love his pants!!

  • This is real music

  • All the folks who disrespect Bruce and his original version of this song are just showing their ignorance...that's all! Because the way Bruce sings this here, and the music (with all the beautiful early 80's melancholy touches music sadly lacks now) is so beautiful. Let the confident fools rave on. It doesn't change the facts.

  • @Mr2009Truth well said brother, you know the truth, let the truth shine on

  • @Mr2009Truth AGREED!!! this version is soooo soothing.. rell 80s. as u said, we cant find this feeling in any of the music nowadays sadly. and ppl go haul ur asses if u hating on Bruce and dont diss an original CLASSIC.

  • @MillaLi22 - It too bad this song didn't get its due respect when it came out.

  • sorry, but the BNL version is a million times better... just an opinion

  • @Jimothy91 Yah but it wasn't original then!

  • @Jimothy91 Not really, but that's just an opinion, too.

  • Barenaked Ladies made it better. This song just sucks when this dude sings it.

  • @googleris Barenaked Ladies are bland crap

  • I love this song... Just love the song thumbs up!

  • I like the dreamy, crystalline tone of the music from this era. It has a haunting, brooding quality that I really enjoy.

  • my name is burn cockburn and god damn im ready to burn some chiken

  • I respect this man
