  • Why is that guy on the other side of the gate @ 0:34

  • @NVergilio He was stuck there because of backed up traffic.

  • Hey man, we've got one here four-quad gates, but train thrown into emergency, near misses, that sort of stuff. Fact is, you can use a train horn or waysides, hell use both! and half the jagazzes in rail crashes out there will still be driving into the sides of trains, foulin crossings, driving around gates. We see workers at the BNSF yard drive around for God's sakes. It's a driver behavior issue in this video, not the freakin horn.

  • @dannosgallery I see your point. The wayside horns don't help anything though. Especially when, (In the Case of Lincoln), there are 4 QZ crossings but only one has wayside horns. They are less effective than train horns, for a pedestrian standpoint but you are right. If you decide to drive infront of the train, it doesn't matter if there is a horn or not. Thanks for watching.

  • The flashing red lights mean stop, period. It's doesn't mean gun it before the gates go down, or race around the gates because you think you can make it, it means effing STOP! I work as an engineer into and out of Chicago every day. I see the most idiotic people on the face of the earth. The worst crossing is 138th and Indiana. It has a combination traffic light which goes to stop on all parts of the intersection, people actually run the red light to not wait five minutes for the train to go by,

  • @scobrown1 People simply don't care and don't care to understand. They consider the red lights and gates as almost, more of a yield sign and an obstacle in their path than a warning device. People in general have no concept of how dangerous it really is to drive or walk infront of a train. Thanks for watching.

  • Our town has done away with traditional horns AND wayside horns completely. It's a shame because some of us actually like hearing the train horns... just not in the middle of the night.

  • I know. This country was built on rails and people move by the train tracks, complain to the city and railroad about the noise and WE have to change for the few who consider it a nuisance. It makes me mad.

  • Hey! At least it's a recording of an RS3L eh !

  • @admydragon Ha ha. I guess you could call it that.

  • Why cant we make all RR crossings were you have to stop no matter what?

  • Rural crossings have stop signs, and these crossings, you are supposed to stop when the lights begin to flash. People run red lights and stop signs too. You can only do so much at an intersection, drivers and pedestrians must do the rest, by staying safe.

  • Wayside horns are at least better than "quiet zones" which are REALLY dangerous !!!

  • It isn't the QZ itself that is dangerous, but the people who do not yeild to them.

  • Everyone wants a foolproof solution but you can't solve for fools. A horn isn't going to deter idiots who want to beat the train. It doesn't matter where the horn is. The main criteria should be for the pedestrian or the driver to be able to hear the horn. Wayside horns are fine in some places but not in others. They are another tool in the safety arsenal and can and should be installed where appropriate.

  • The thing is, the red X is flashing to alert the conductor the wayside system is working, if its not flashing, they are required to do routine horn warning. They are also required to blow in adverse weather conditions, at trespassers, and pedestrians/vehicles who fail to yield. Yes it is pointless to only have one set of horns for 4 crossings, but when properly utilized, by train, and vehicle/pedestrian traffic which is usually the source of incidents, it can be a perfectly safe system.

  • True. The only problem I have with the horns is that it doesn't matter to some people whether the horn is there or not, they're gonna try to beat the train, making the system somewhat unneeded. The wayside horn is also alot quieter than a regular horn so some people may not be able to hear the train, though they should still see the gates and lights

  • @BNSFbeagrett9647 I see what you're saying, but the wayside system restricts the sound blast radius to where it is needed, the railroad crossing, not a quarter to half mile down the track where most train engineers are required to begin manually sounding the horn. I've walked alongside a wayside horn when activated and its pretty loud.

Yes, there will be people who try and go around the and the wayside horn is not a way to deter this but merely mimic what a train engineer must do.

  • You have a good point. I just don't understand why Lincoln put theirs where they did. This wayside is on a 2 lane road. There are 3 other quite zones in Lincoln and they are all 4 lane roads with much more road traffic.

  • especialy if the gates are malfuctionin

  • Yes.

  • The flashing red X; that means quiet zone right?

  • Yeah, when it isn't flashing the crossing malfunctions and the trains are required to blow their horns.

  • @truckinman86- Actually, it's just to tell the engineer (Or anybody that's paying attention) that the wayside horns are working. They flash all day and all night. If it's not flashing, the engineer gets to sound his horn. YAY!!!

  • That is kinda stupid. To not hear train horns yet have one crossing with a wayside horn. I don't live where you are, but i agree with you. ;)

  • Thanks!

  • park ave has the same bell but it's a type 2 it sounds the same

  • is this adams st

  • Yeah.

  • i didnt know there was something like that in lincoln NE,but there's plenty of those in CN's former Wisconsin Central route in illinois on the old US45 in the grayslake-mundelain-gurnee area thanks to all the new housings and the six flags, nothing has happen so far but its a matter of time before something goes wrong and then......

  • I live just a few block away from where this video was shot and i have all my life. I have never once had a problem with the horns at all. People just need to stop bitching about it. The tracks have been there longer then most of the housing there. So i guess like someone else said. People will learn the hard way

  • THANK YOU! Finally, a Linconite with some SENSE! I appreciate the comment!

  • You are very welcome.

  • The last comment I made was just rhetoric not for real but we do need some form of Natural Selection so the Evolution of Humans moves forward instead of Backwards, can't see why letting stupid people get hit by trains is any more stupid than allowing the same people to endanger the lives of others with such stupid Ideas as Wayside horns and Quite Zones ....

  • True, people who don't want to wait for the train wont stop, why make them? It isn't the engineers fault for pedestrian stupididty, why make them suffer?

  • Your totally right!

  • Thanks!

  • Hey we should take out the warnings(Horns, Crossing lights and Gates) altogether where folks don't want to hear train horns after awhile the nature will take its coarse and there will be a natural decline in idiots. We should however leave in the Cross Bucks so those with commonsense will see the track and stop....

  • True, true, but keep the horns, I like the horn.

  • I don't mean to get rid of the horn Physically just in the areas where they don't want us to blow then just don't blow them. However we should also install pull down curtains in locomotives because we should not be subjected to permanent physiological damage on the account of someone elses stupidity

  • That's a horn? Great video

  • It is called a wayside horn, it is really just an electronic train horn on a loudspeaker, they are pointless and not verysafe in my opinion.

  • Thanks a lot for the information. I did some research up on them and in my opinion they seem brutally pointless. The bell is louder than the cruddy wayside horn.

  • True!

  • Great vid and a nice catch Dalton

  • Thanks Peter.

  • Hey nice video I disagree with quiet zones completely though I completely agree with colinroxanduknowit no one made you live by the tracks so stop complaining about the horns. Trains are geting quiter and people are paying less and less attention I think quiet zones are just asking to get people killed.

  • AGREED 150%!

  • I am with you when you are right my Husker brother!

  • GO BIG RED!

  • too bad, that was awesome 3 ACe's!!!!!!!! THAT IS A GREAT VIDEO

  • Thanks!

  • He was asking for it

  • Yes he was.

  • Wow, they should do something about that, you know BEFORE SOMEONE DIES!!!

  • They wont though, it will only be AFTER sadly.

  • yep, they only do something if something bad does happen

  • Dang...for a SD70ACe you'd expect to get your head ripped off....they need to fix that! 5***** video!

  • Yes they do, thanks!

  • exactly!, the people that live near the crossings bitched about the noise though, but its not like the track was put in after they moved in, they should of expected hearing trains when they moved in...

  • 1000000% TRUE!!!!!!
