Still sounds just as good as it did years ago. Why quarrel about remakes and remasters when you've got this timeless track right here for you to listen to?
I could rant and rave about this game, but really, there was one thing that I just could not forgive.
By the end of the game, your entire party except for Maxim MAYBE Selan and potentially Dekar if you loved him as much as I did, were totally worthless. Their job was to sit around and be an extra life so you can revive Maxim if he dies. The dynamic of the original, where all of them had their strengths and weaknesses, and they were all valuable, was destroyed. The final battle was a 1v1! No
2 things i like about the ds version, the battle system is similar to secret of mana, and lexis's character design. am i the only one who thinks lexis looks like doc brown from back to the future
I like both, it's like playing the same story in two completely different ways. I think the DS version was pretty awesome and I also love the SNES version.
I dont get whats not to like. Ys + lufia = this remake. both are awesome and this is an awesome game. holy crap we could complain all day about the changes or just look at it differently.
In all honesty, I think both versions are great. They have different styles of gameplay. One for hardcore battlers (Even if it may not be that hardcore) or one for turn based strategy type of battleing. They're both good, so get over it.
It's fun to notice that they have changed the battle themes somewhat the minimum amount possible for a remake... They've just realized these themes are perfect they way they are so no real need to make remixes out of these :)
@kryenarl The remake. There's a lot of confusion about who created what in this game, but Neverland and Square really did "co-develop" this one. Yusuke Naora is a Square employee and so is Hajime Kojima. Mr. Kojima was the producer for this game, which means he had a high level of control over its development.
Perhaps my biggest gripe with this remake is the major style changes. I don't think its fitting that Maxim is wearing a leather jacket. He comes across as the Japanese Fonz. Dekar was originally a champion whose strength rivals Guy's, but he simply looks like a slim smooth talker.
I'm fine with the way Selan and Guy are portayed. And Tia, although very different from the original, I actually like. She has a more interesting style in the remake.
This is a REMAKE, and a very good one at that, not a PORT. Yes, I also had hope that it would be a bit more like the original, but it still came out very good, just enjoy it!
what annoys me the most from the people who played the original is the fact VERY few have actually bothered to realize this is a revamp of the game they love for todays market. sure the changes are large but where the HELL do you all get off saying its inferior just because its not a direct snes port? Seriously if all you have to do is bitch then play the original and ignore this.
@ameldia i love the new game the new game is sweet i swear all these old fans are gonna be like in my day games were so much better thus the new game wont even get a chance. natsume did a horrible job with the marketing so the only thing that is left is the old fanbase. if they go against it the game wont sell and lufia is gonna die again for a long period of time.
@ameldia Whilst I agree with many that the snes version will always be the superior game, like you I can say that curse of the sinistrals was still a very satisfying and well made ds game. Wish more people could see them as separate games too!
@ameldia But there are still 2 problems, which surely bother most of the "old" fans.
1) Why has in general everything to be remaked and new designed from the ground? If you want to share the experience to todays players, why don't use simply a port?
2) Why had all Character-Designs to be completly new and "modern"? Maxim weared an armor, because he was a warrior and not a biker with a leather jacket, for gods sake!
I appreciate a remake for modern audience, but not, that it changes everything.
Character redesigns weren't necessarily to modernize things so much as make things the way they should've been. Did anyone believe a little girl in a flowey dress ran a rough and tumble item shop. Her new outfit fits her personality and profession a lot better. Selan doesn't make as much sense being a magician, she's supposed to be a monstrously strong woman. Dekar also looked cooler in a long coat. The redesign did sacrifice nostalgia and difficulty, but, it was still a strong showing.
@Ohnogiantrobots your opinion, I suppose. Now I saw a walkthrough to the game and the real problem is clear: I think it was a mistake to make a remake. The developers should have done another "reincarnation" of lufia or something. But in this form, you can clearly see, that nearly all scenes are inferior to the original. Lame or totally random Boss Fights (you fight Gades not just 4, no nearly 10 million times...) and wasted potential through scenes with NO music oÔ
@Ohnogiantrobots But the real epic fail lies within the intro of the game... With a pointless stereotypic Villian presentation which shows Gades as more retarded than usual... Take the original Meeting with Arek in the intro! You don't even see most of the sinistral till their apperance in the middle of the game. I just can't believe, how the same developers can fuck-up this kind of simple story telling which they already mastered once...<_<
@soratazharatos Hi, fan of the original Lufia 2 here. Noticed your anti-DS version rant spanning pages, so here's a counterpoint. The steampunk/magitech world revamp beats the shit out of a bunch of generic as hell looking cities and backdrops, and the modern styles on the characters does a fantastic job at creating a contrast between the humans and the Sinistrals, and between human self reliance/creativity vs the armor wearing Sinistrals showing an outdated mindset. Mirrors the story perfectly.
@Riketz which "story"? Oh, you mean the genius plot where no real drama and/or suspense is coming up... Great. For whatever reason, Gades makes a stereotypic-as-hell-villian-speech and you have to defeat him as a mech for no good reason. And then the entire drama around Tia, who left in the original the party forever, because she couldn't live Maxims life alongside with him is bashed up, by the fact that she comes still back?! Maybe the setting is nice revamp, but the storytelling fails.
@Riketz especially the opening: The original lived from the upcoming suspense of the sinistral BECAUSE you never saw them except for Erim and Arek (and from the music). But here? Oh. You see the sinistrals and Gades is acting as he is the stereotypic stupid evil overlord... I can clearly see, why the revamp is far better than the original... <.< Was it so impossible simply to use the original script as orientation? If you can't tell a story properly, you shouldn't make an RPG...
@soratazharatos maxims old look is bullshit...selans and maxims new look are great! and this doesn't mean he's a biker! but dekars and gays new look is bullsh*...
@soratazharatos I kinda like maxims new look, to be serious. But look what they did to Dekar and Guy! Is Dekar a gun-wearing soldier? With a Laboratory look? And Guy? Is he a fuckin' bodybuilder?! -_-' That really annoys me. The overworld system is just a card without any action. And Tia has a bag. but somehow, Maxim is okay for me. My quote is: Acceptable, but not as good as the original.
I just feel like the game could have gotten away with it by not calling it Lufia 2, using different characters, and what not, and maybe call it Lufia DS just for fans to recognize. I mean, the story had changed quite enough.
I love the people saying "this'll suck because it's nothing like the original." You want the original? Then go pop it into your SNES (or emulator). There. Your problem is solved.
...that said, I figure this might suffer a little due to the style change, but it still looks to be worth a buy.
Why the hell did they turn one of the greatest SNES games of all time into this butchered mess? I appreciate the closeness to the original this time, but god...has anyone realized the GAME sucks yet?
@InsanoRider777 You don't need to play ths game to know this is a total fail you know.
Knowing that the whole playing style, Dekar's blue hair and so probably many more changes people won't like are in this game I can say with all my heart.
This game sucks no matter what it will be like because it won't be anything like the original, thus being a raped new version to make money.
@InfernalDranzer I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't say something you haven't played sucks. If you say the game looks like it sucks, or it doesn't look like your kind of game, that's ok. But to say flat-out that it sucks without giving it a chance is unfair to the developers. I will personally try the game to see what they did for myself and because the original Lufia 2 is one of my favorite RPGs. If it really sucks that bad, I'll trade-it in and eat my words.
Well, it's not AS butchered as the boss battle theme, but they still messed with it too much. It reminds me of when they made Super Street Fighter II. The way they modified songs like Ryu's theme was very similar, and I don't like it at all.
Still sounds just as good as it did years ago. Why quarrel about remakes and remasters when you've got this timeless track right here for you to listen to?

lol inorite?
I only used Guy for that one fight with Idura, breaking rocks, and Miracle-ing Maxim. He's too slow to do anything worthwhile.
Selan? Those silly boomerang puzzles.
I never touched Dekar, since he felt similar to Maxim, but without the XDash.
Tia is too paper to use for most later stuff.
It's a good thing I used Maxim throughout most of the game, though if I didn't, I would have been in a very, very tough spot. I got lucky. :p
