Great stuff. Often untold is the story of my ship, the USS Arkansas, the first US Naval ship in the evacuation of Clark personnel and dependents to Cebu via Subic Bay. I believe it was the day of the largest eruption, June 15th, two days before the runs made by the Abe Lincoln that are outlined in this video. We were pierside, powered by our reactors, when all hell broke loose. Quite small as compared to the Lincoln (and no hangar bay), we made two trips to Cebu before the Lincoln relieved us.
Great video - this followed my exact itinerary (I didn't spot myself in the video anywhere, though :) ). Hard to believe this was just over 20 years ago. I was lucky enough to be one of the first ones to leave as I already had orders to Nellis AFB. I also got lucky when I got onboard the Lincoln - I was picked up by the Admiral's aide and actually got my *own* berth in visiting O-6 quarters - an E-3 with my own room and shower!
I was a sailor (DC2) on the Abraham Lincoln at that time. I heard so many horror stories about the locals waving as military personnel and dependents were being evacuated and their property was looted. Our passengers were so happy to get a hot meal, a place to sleep and a shower; things most people take for granted. The only fun part of that situation was the pets we looked after. I hope your time on board the Lincoln was helpful and helped all of you cope during that crazy time.
@Honkynees I was lucky enough to be one of the last "essential" Air Force personnel to leave on the Abraham Lincoln. I had been working virtually around the clock trying to account for every U.S. Serviceman/woman assigned to Clark, and all of their dependents. The only reason I got to leave when I did, was that my tour was up in a month, and I guess I lucked out. I'll never forget walking onto the ship and being handed a cup of ice water, something I hadn't tasted in weeks.
@Honkynees I want to thank you and all of your shipmates for giving up your bunks and living spaces. I remember eating, showering and passing out until we reached Guam.
That was my wedding gift. Got my fiancée out from Subic just one week before the eruption. We got married on June 9th on the States which was the 10th in PI. Just two days later I was recalled back to my ship USS Midway in Japan to help with the evacuation. Never did got a honeymoon, but we'll be married 20 years.
Does anyone know Gary Dale in Air Force in Clark Base? Im looking for my father and my mother name is Josephine.. And my father name is Gary dale, that what my mom told me his name!!! 1984 to 1988 he was station there around there but I know in 1987 he was there.
I was on the USS Midway that pulled in along with the Lincoln to help evac everyone out of Olongapo, everyone was gray they were so glad to get on board we were running with a skeleton crew and I didn't hear not one person complain or get mad or anything even though we didn't have a lot of help to lend, everyone thanked us for anything we could do to help them.
great video. My wife and 2 kids evacuated from Subic on USS Abraham Lincoln. It was a stressful time, but the families were resilient and the military came through and took care of business as usual. Thanks, ATCS Tim Miskel, USN (ret)
I was there. I was 14 years old @ the time. It was very hard for me & my family. We were stationed there since 1984. We had one more week of school before summer. My lil' sister was just born on may 23. Our beloved doberman pincher Crackers was left behind. We didn't get to say goodbye to our friends we grew with or even to our family that lived in the philippines. We had to pack only necessities and leave all our memories behind. Thank you for this documentary. I do miss my home very much.

Was there March-Oct 1991. Sent back to the base( postal Sq). Packing out houses and taking care of the mail. Lost touch with Pat and Tracy they went to Florida Oct 1991. Love to get back in touch. (The bar girls made it through and continued their night jobs, for the guys who worried about them.)
While on Mactan, we played cards in order to resist falling asleep and potentially missing our flight to Guam and being eaten alive by mosquitos in the process. What an experience!
I was stationed in the 6922 Electronic Security Squadron and evacuated per the video. I will forever remain in debt to my Navy brothers who made our transit to Mactan Island, Cebu as comfortable as possible. However, I will not forget handing a family heirloom ring to my first sergeant, Alan Hodges, prior to boarding the USS Midway, only to find it missing with no explanation. Guess not all military are honest.
I was stationed on the USS Long Beach, we were in Hawaii and called back to the ship early to help evac dependants from Subic and Clark. In 48 hrs we evac'd approx 1500 people (the Abraham Lincoln got all the commendations - nice to see mention of us here). That was a truly amazing time, PI was devastated. - wwhite1432: hope your family is doing good!
i was there as well. i was 10 years old when we had to do an emergency evacuation from clark air base. it was intense and a memory i will never forget.
Cool video. I was there and being a Security Policeman, we didn't get evacuated with everyone. So I got to see a lot of this up close and personal. My guys 3rd TEWTS got recalled to Camp O'Donnel during the volcano so we had a different angle on the eruption. Eventually, we got cut off from Clark, Subic and everywhere else we tried to fall back to. We ended up riding the whole thing out on base. Very trying times but in the end we all made it. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!
I was there and lived through it all. I worked in the 3MSSQ, CBPO and was actually responsible for the massive ecvac to Subic Bay, trying to account for everyone. I stayed 2 weeks after the eruption...it was hell on earth! I'll never forget how that first glass of ice water tasted like when I stepped on board of the USS Abraham Lincoln.
throw in a bunch of active volcanoes next to a couple of abandoned U.S. military bases, subic bay and Clark and it can be partly why tourism to the islands has dropped.
I was there, C Co 3rd Recon Bn. My story was way different, but life changed very quickly that day for us and many others. Our mission changed, as well as the focus of what was important and not important. I helped people both alive and dead. USS Abe Lincoln was our first real food, and then we had to get off and make room for the civies, that was fine, but it will be something I carry with me for life, first Desert shield/storm then Mt Pinatubo. I was beginning someone hated us.
Great to get such feedback from one who appears to have been in the thick of it all..
Seldom do we feel our efforts have made POSITIVE impact on anything across life. I think you and others on the USS Abraham Lincoln and other vessels, can feel good about your accomplishments.
I see alot of POSITIVES from our Philippines experiences. As a videographer, I only wish a camera was available to capture times in Thailand (AFTN~ UDORN'71,AFKN~Kunsan,Korea'82Greenland & more.
Well to be honest, you must remember I was in the USMC at the time, and only assisted in getting people from shore to ship. The USS Abe Lincoln was one of many ships and aircraft getting people OUT of the danger areas. I just glad someone recorded what I didn't get to see. Many of the Marines went without so others could have as well as not being allowed in Navy chowhalls, but we certianly allowed to clean the roofs.
Your videos brought back a lot of memories of the old clark air base to me.I still live near the vicinity. I would like to know if you have any news on my former neighbors in Sta.Maria Village,Dave Beavais(?) who use to work for FEN? He use to hang out with Renee Blatee, a navy journalist. Thanks.
Thank you for capturing those moments in time, bringing back tears in my eyes. I was then a mother with 5 kids while my husband was left behind to secure the base.
Virgil my brother: I had departed Clark in August 1990 or my family and I would have been among the evacuees. You have produced a fine account of what those people went through. When I show this to my wife, we will no doubt spot some of those we knew in our five years there. Salamat Po. Godspeed.
The idea is to seek out thousands of folks, who are the loved X-PATriots still home in the Philippines, as well as those scattered elsewhere, who treasure their many special memories of this Pacific Paradise. Let's keep a special place online and in our hearts for that experience. Don't forget that flights are now available, to fly direct to Clark and other fabulous points in paradise. Stay tuned for more videos...
I was a person from 8 MAPS. We ecacuated from clark to the navy base. There, I was responsible for moving out dependents to Cebu. I also evacuated on the USS midway. Once we got there, we were responsible for moving everyone out from Cebu. I saw lots of scared kids, and Navy dependents, whose husbands were not there. I eventually got redeployed and closed down clark. I was happy to get a lot of scared people out of there. I was scared myself. Esp during no day and earthquakes
its kinda nice that I watched this video, I was there, I was 11 yr old, it was the scariest time of my life, we were at clark air base when it erupted, noon turned into dark, our house was under the sand about 2 feet. anyone out here that was there let me know, want to share the moments.
Thanks for the video vvideo06. I lived in Manila from '87-'91 (family was not military) but I did have the chance to visit both Clark and Subic. My family moved back to the U.S. in June of '91 and didn't know until we were almost back to the States that Pinatubo had erupted. I was under the impression that there was no warning but it's good to see there was from geologists. However, what happened to all the personal property of the military personnelin the houses and barracks?
Hello: To your ? what happend to the personal property,it was a matter of what was more important your life and the life of your family or personal items, if it could fit in a suite case you took it even the famil;y pets were left to fend for themselfs. and on my last trip in November 07 you could still buy items from that time in downtown Angeles City, .
To menename: It was nice in it's day but Fields Ave now as of Nov07 is a dump. black mail from the girls has grown to be a goldmine for them, and the internet rip offs, many dance just for kicks look but don't touch is good advice you play with fire you will be burnt .R&R is better taken away from this dump.
VVIDEO06: You're right, I too am a sinner. My sins are not different to that of other humans. The sins of heterosexuals are no different to that of homosexuals/bisexuals or transgendered and hermaphrodites. All have fallen short of the glory of God, yet it is Jesus who was punished in our place. Please forgive me my friend.
VVIDEO06: I agree with you, I have my points in misbehaving. But Angeles City is very flamboyant about it, so a Supreme Being put a stop to it. My question to you now is, has Angeles City repented, or are they still in their ways of lasciviousness?
Our position is not to call judgement. Those issues will be dealt with in due time. Let's live and let live. In this electronic age, we all live in glass houses to some extent. Let's not cast stones. The people of Angeles City have love in their hearts just as anyone else on this planet. Can't we all just get along???
Duh, even after 600 years of being dormant, Mt. Pinatubo was the work of a Higher Being of booting the U.S. military out of what was, and still considered, "sin-city"...Angeles City. Type "Angeles City" and you'll see what I mean. He's had enough of the misbehaving there.
Don't be so misled by life in any place on this blessed planet we call HOME. You make the point about misbehaving. Certainly you, whomever you claim to be, has misbehaved on occasion. Don't cast a stone on anyone. Enjoy life as it deals its hand of cards of what Mt. Pinatubo left behind. I am sure the community of Angeles City will appreciate you also, if you have something POSITIVE to offer...
thank you for posting this video on youtube. it brings back memories of our once very beautiful province of pampanga. my dad used to work at clark base as a chef. our house was one of those destroyed by the rampaging flow of volcanic materials from the crater in october 1995(4 yrs after eruption).slowly we are rebuilding and has a new governor (former catholic priest) who is leading the way.
Not all people are cynical. But its is more realistic to be cynical. It is a sad reality that most politicians are cheats. They have to cheat to get into power but there are some who still care for our people.
feels like just yesterday. i'm one of the last few servicemen who left the base when pinatubo erupted. I'm now at Fort Monmouth, NJ and planning to visit the Philippines next year.
WOW, great video, it brings me BACK!!!! I was there and I remember it like it was yesterday! My dad had to stay behind to help "clean up" the after math...he was a Navy Seabee. Once everything was cleared, I then returned to Subic Bay Philippines and attended Binitican Elementary.
Seeing the footage in the video makes the evacuation seem much more organized than I had experienced it. Of course, with a 8-month pregnant mother, a 1-year old sister, and a cat, we were (without my father) literally the first to evacuate. It was not a very smooth process. My father evacuated 3 days later, yet arrived in the US only 3 hours after we did! Not at fun experience, but god bless all those who really tried to make it one!
What is remarkable is to look back and realize the fears faced by any woman pregnant, traveling with children, a pet and absent of the father of the household. Whatever I managed to capture on tape of the ordeal, let's all be thankful we made it home.
there's no honest politician that is the fact.. all of them are corrupt and using their power to abuse the law. that's why they want to be a politician.
i lived in clark when pintatubo erupted. its something ill never forget. i was about 5, we evacuated to subic bay and i wated in a hanger and watched jungle story 1.
it was dark for a few days. and it rained ash and rocks. i think its a good thing the typhoon hit or it would have been dark alot longer than it did. =)
I was assigned to Clark Air Base twice in the 80's and have several videos of Clark AB and Angeles City and other areas in the Philippines. I am married to a Filipina, have permanent residency in the Philippines and own a home in Ermita Manila. Check out the world wide web ricexpats dot com to see many videos and hundreds of photos of the Philippines. Ken Rice, retired MSgt USAF
You can thank Filipinos for VJ Day, without 1st and 2nd Filipino Regiments under McArthur (all volunteers from San Francisco and Hawaiian Filipino communities) we would not have taken back The Phils so easily, if at all, yeah, it WAS that close.
I spent 3 months with my now wife in Capas, had to come back stateside and just waiting on the papers atm. There may be corruption in the Filipino government, but at least they are honest about it, more than we can say for ourselves. A strong family oriented society, reverent church goers, and a warm-hearted hospitality. After all of the positives and negatives are weighed, Filipino culture is what we only DREAM about here.
Over 900 U.S. ex-pats live there alone, not including the larger commuity in Subic. I went there to meet my internet sweetheart 2 years ago and discovered a WONDERFUL culture, delicious new foods (lol, to me). And lets not forget the BEER! OMG! San Miguel is the BEST BEER! (wink to my Fil friends, see San Miguel Paquio commercials here on Youtube)
Those "chemicals" are probably hydrogen sulfide, a hazardous gas that leaks from volcanic areas, smells like rotten eggs. The former Clark AFB is now Clarkfield-Pampanga, an industrial area marked by the government as a Special Economic Zone. There is a nice picnic park next to the industrial area, duty free shops (great places when you want your US goods) on tree shaded streets and a very nice, ultra-modern SM Mall.
Even low levels of hydrogen sulfide over long periods can cause the death of intestinal bacteria, leading to candisis of the intestinal wall. Also, it can oxidize to H2SO4, Sulfuric acid, causing skin lessions and nasal polyps.
What chemicals? you mean our people made up story? about all the so they get money and kick out american off base? that way they get rich for all american left behind? as we all know they have what they want, don't tell me that crap chemicals of yours, and your one of them pathetic!!
I do not know about Clark or the US relations at that time. I just spent 3 weeks in baguio with my Fiance and I was treated with respect, courtesy, and overall kindness. The Filipinos are a great people.
Too bad you have such a NEGATIVE opinion about the era of American presence in the Philippines. Of course, the much ill-spoken-of American could have remained on his and her side of the Pacific Ocean during the Spanish-American war, and World War II.
Then, either the Spanish or Japanese could be available to help in the clean-up of Tondo and other places that America did not create...
Let's not quibble about who is right, or wrong. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder--or should I say the one seeing the beauty, or receiving its benefits. I do believe the assets of Clark, Subic
and other facilities turned out to be more beneficial to local communities than liabilities. Just ask builders today about what they have to offer the public from infra-structure left after Mt. Pinatubo in these areas. Also, ask the 300-thousand or so previous workers in each base community.
Having been stationed at Subic in the early 80's and in and out of there many, many times during my Navy career, I really enjoyed the look back that this video gives.
i'll never foget my experience there. the year before mt.pintubo eruption, there was a big earthquake in angeles city. the level was over 7. the year after, the mt.pinatubo eruption. while others evacuated, we stayed at home.
to all americans! i'm filipino and i grew up in dau, near clark. i miss the presence of the americans in the philippines. not all filipinos share jamesgarcia's view. he's talking nonsense.
i'm filipino who grew up in dau and i miss the american presence. everything worked then. till today angeles city is strugling with the economy. not to mention i felt securty when americans were there. it's selfish to say what jamesgarcia just said. it could be that americans profited from the filipinos but likewise also.
I was Stationed in Subic Bay during this eruption with my family. We took in a family from Clark AFB. I will never forget that black Saturday as it was the worse disaster in my life time and that for my wife and children. My wife being a Filipina wanted to just stay in the PI, but was ordered out on the Lincoln.
As a reporter working on the story and covering it in Clark. the Mayor of Angeles city - was given a warning to evacuate immediatly. The then Mayor - laughed it off as over caution. He even threatened the local PHIVOLCS people to not issue a waring. He was proven dead wrong when the volcano erupted.
"The Americans were finally kicked out." Is that merely a glib statement stating such? Just for the mere fact that Americans left. Well.... just like anything else - when huge installations close down (and yes I know, the bases were converted commercially)...many lose jobs, the country (Phils.) lose income, not to mention losing an asset for national security. I really would like to hear more substantial reasons why it would be a "benefit" that the US had left. Thanks so much for posting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Americans ptetend to help, but all they really do is perpetuate the master-slave relationship that have gone on for centuries. The Philippines is still trying to shake the effect of the colonial period. Their confidence will be restored much quickly if they learn to stand on their feet.
Spanish Rule did more to harm Filipinos than the American influence. They are a people divided within themselves by Provincial bias, Complexion, and economic status.

It was like a dream to me and I will never forget the rest of my life. My husband was assigned at the 3rd AF Security squadroon. We were there from 1989 until Pinatubo erupted. The day of a big eruption we were already evacuated to Naval Base in Olongapo. Days turned night and every 3 to five minutes you would feel the earth shakes it was so scary.

I was a weather observer for Detatchment 5, 20th Weather Squadron at Clark Air Base from January 1989 to February 1991..this video really brings back memories...that shot of the canopy outside Base Operations especially...at the end of that walkway is where we used to take our weather observations
I was station at Cubi Point when Pinatubo went off; wife and kids were evacuated out and I got the honor of staying behind and digging the place out.

I was stationed at Yokota Ab Japan when this happened. We were deployed to Mactan AB, Cebu to build a tent city and processing area for the evacuees.
We saw so many pets die from the heat during the transportation. Most of the people only had the clothes on their backs.

Salamat Po. Godspeed.

Hello ampinoy13:
THANKS ALLOT FOR YOUR INPUT..

However, what happened to all the personal property of the military personnelin the houses and barracks?
acstults 4 years ago
Hello: To your ? what happend to the personal property,it was a matter of what was more important your life and the life of your family or personal items, if it could fit in a suite case you took it even the famil;y pets were left to fend for themselfs. and on my last trip in November 07 you could still buy items from that time in downtown Angeles City, .

There was no Field Ave in my day (1964-65) but I met a lot of nice people in Balibago and Angeles.

nice PR for US military!.. Where are the Fields Ave chicks??? Ohh.. how I miss them! :)
menename 4 years ago

My question to you now is, has Angeles City repented, or are they still in their ways of lasciviousness?
jusitke07 4 years ago
Our position is not to call judgement. Those issues will be dealt with in due time. Let's live and let live. In this electronic age, we all live in glass houses to some extent. Let's not cast stones. The people of Angeles City have love in their hearts just as anyone else on this planet. Can't we all just get along???
vvideo06 4 years ago
Duh, even after 600 years of being dormant, Mt. Pinatubo was the work of a Higher Being of booting the U.S. military out of what was, and still considered, "sin-city"...Angeles City. Type "Angeles City" and you'll see what I mean. He's had enough of the misbehaving there.
jusitke07 4 years ago

Not at fun experience, but god bless all those who really tried to make it one!
jaclynkb 4 years ago
What is remarkable is to look back and realize the fears faced by any woman pregnant, traveling with children, a pet and absent of the father of the household. Whatever I managed to capture on tape of the ordeal, let's all be thankful we made it home.

There is a nice picnic park next to the industrial area, duty free shops (great places when you want your US goods) on tree shaded streets and a very nice, ultra-modern SM Mall.
moonchild01112004 4 years ago
Even low levels of hydrogen sulfide over long periods can cause the death of intestinal bacteria, leading to candisis of the intestinal wall. Also, it can oxidize to H2SO4, Sulfuric acid, causing skin lessions and nasal polyps.
moonchild0111 4 years ago
What chemicals? you mean our people made up story? about all the so they get money and kick out american off base? that way they get rich for all american left behind? as we all know they have what they want, don't tell me that crap chemicals of yours, and your one of them pathetic!!

Also, ask the 300-thousand or so previous workers in each base community.
vvideo06 4 years ago

I was Stationed in Subic Bay during this eruption with my family. We took in a family from Clark AFB. I will never forget that black Saturday as it was the worse disaster in my life time and that for my wife and children. My wife being a Filipina wanted to just stay in the PI, but was ordered out on the Lincoln.

That was a great day for the Philippine people. They finally kicked the American bases out.
jamesgarcia 5 years ago
That's a very idiotic thing to say, since alot of Filipinos died that day and more were displaced. Way to spread that love for the filipino race.

EditorialngBayan 4 years ago
"The Americans were finally kicked out." Is that merely a glib statement stating such? Just for the mere fact that Americans left. Well.... just like anything else - when huge installations close down (and yes I know, the bases were converted commercially)...many lose jobs, the country (Phils.) lose income, not to mention losing an asset for national security. I really would like to hear more substantial reasons why it would be a "benefit" that the US had left. Thanks so much for posting.
Blue2Green 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
The Americans ptetend to help, but all they really do is perpetuate the master-slave relationship that have gone on for centuries. The Philippines is still trying to shake the effect of the colonial period. Their confidence will be restored much quickly if they learn to stand on their feet.
