  • OMFG that's amazing

  • I will not see these old cartoons the same way anymore. This stuff is really great.

  • I think the most notable aspect of this mini-documentary is the amount of work that went into it. We've got tons of animation created specifically for the purpose of explaining its concepts, excellent narration by Walt Disney himself, and a stylish soundtrack that accompanies all of it.

Now THAT'S how you make a behind-the-scenes documentary.

  • thats just Toon Boom Studio. LoL with it's camera and layers moving back and forth XD

  • Art challenge technology, technology inspire art.

Until now the concept of " layer" still using in photoshop/After effect/Flash ...

  • This was a very slow, complex and high-costing method. The workers would work around the clock moving the heavy glasses until the scene was done - and approved by Walt. Any studio would go bankrupt today, if using multiplane camera. Luckily ToonBoom and alike have such feature, but it's still rarely used.

  • @Vuusteri Rarely used?! :( I think the multiplane camera shoud be tradition!

  • @CaptainCretaceous91

I remember watching one Family Guy episode commentary, in which they take notice how they're using multiplane camera in one particular scene. Usually many of the shows today use CGI for depth-requiring scenes.

  • @chattingcat how about 3D movies?

  • is it just me or does Walt Disney remind you of Cave Johnson?

  • Walt Disney, genius. Period.

  • And now, any little kid can, and does, create this all the time with flash animation.

In 30 or 40 years, we'll probably be able to render Avatar graphics on a small web app online.

  • @chattingcat

well apart from mickey mouse/donald duck etc. the other stories like bambi, cinderella, beauty and the beast, snow white were all "remakes" of other fairy tales and fables...

  • This is absolutely amazing!! They should bring this kind of shits back. 3D just killed the awesome animation of this!

  • so internet can show us more that only porn ._.

  • It looks very exhausting.

  • 1:25-2:29 would have been a great opening sequence for a "Duck Amuck"-esque Mickey Mouse cartoon. Disney should start think about doing that after they decide to end "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse".

  • Gosh, glad we can do this with Photoshop and After Effects now instead of a huge freaking machine

  • 1:50 animation fail :-D

  • That little tune that Mickey whistles is the one from "The Pointer".

  • For those of you who want to know, German animator Lotte Reiniger invented this shit.

  • @chattingcat 3D movies? IMAX? special effects?

  • OMG Two Mickeys! (1:50)

  • THATS LOTS OF WORK MAN....

  • did anyone else cry during this beautiful demonstration of true aniamtion? i did.

i need to get one of those cameras!

  • Analog animation sure took a lot to get some nice scenes on film. lol They had to invent a multimillion dollar camera just to get 30 seconds of animation. lol

  • beautiful

  • I have started a small cartoon series on my channel, but it ain't like this much....

    This is way better :P

  • People are too caught up in the past. "If you focus on what's behind you, you won't be able to see what lies ahead." - Ratatouille, a 2007 Disney Pixar movie.

You won't get the past back, so stop sitting there with your damn tail between your legs and go check out what's available around you.

  • @YukoEXE yes but what's available SUCKS!!!!!

  • I am terribly awed and inspired after watching this.

  • Actually, I have DVDs in my collection spanning every decade going back to the 1920s. The only "creativity" occurring now is technical--but the artistry is completely missing and empty. I haven't been to a new movie in 5 years. It's too painful.

  • @loge10 Toy Story 3.

  • I truly is magical.

  • @chattingcat This could only be said by a person, who doesn't follow the contemporary cinema at all. I can talk for hours about such great creative minds, who are working today and I've always found it silly how most people always talk how great the past is only to forget that the today isn't that bad at all. Do we always need half a century or more to acknowledge a real spark of genius? I can safely say many of my most beloved movies, live action and animation, have come out only recently.

  • @HalfLifeHalfDead Lol... The sad part is it doesn't take much to please some people. Some of us prefer originality and quality. I stand by my comment.

  • "I was moving it the wrong way, dick."

  • Nice acting lol!

  • There's not many MultiPlane camera's left. Ive seen one though at Disneyland Paris inside the Wonderful World of Disney.

  • That man was a genius.

  • Max Fleischer was the first to really accomplish this. Although it is amazing, Disney was notorious for taking ideas and making them better with more family related ideas.

  • I would love to use this when I become a filmmaker. I hate the idea of computers replacing traditional arts, such as animation.

  • God bless Ub Iwerks, Uncle Walt's best friend for inventing a breakthrough invention like this.

  • Ah, singing wood nymphs!

  • Walt is a genius. Period.

  • listening to walt makes my heart happy :]

  • wow, thnx for posting

  • Adobe Flash and After Effects work like multiplane cameras in ways. This was cool to see.

  • it is good to know how this tricks works, so if all the electronics went down, we can make again movies....well not that interactive...

  • "What's wrong down there Allen?"

"I was moving it in the wrong direction Dave. I'm taking it back now. How's that?"

    ROFL

  • @vidmm Allen, you r a fucking shmack!

  • THIS is cartoon, not this crap that goes on Disney Channel all day.. I miss when i was 10..And i'm only 17, I mean, it was 7 years ago!!!

  • hahhahaha

  • @leozinalmeida

then you missed out on some of the best Disney had to offer ;P

  • @alixinthemiddle What did that person miss out on? Tell me.

  • this is so neat. it makes me really appreciate all the time and effort that used to go into cartoons. it seems like theses days anyone can make a cartoon within a matter of minutes. in the old days can you imagine how long it took to shoot all the shots individually. wow. thanks technology. lol

  • Beautiful concept. I love it.

  • What a cool clip! thx alot ! :)

  • woah. i feel educated! and better appreciation for layers

  • Man! imagine going back in time with a macbookpro and a copy of After effects...would be rich RICH I TELL YOU! lol and this video would say "the opening scene in bambi was done by a freelancer that works from home and has a secret technique that no1 noes but dont it look great?" HA HA HA

  • Imagine how will transfer digital image on film when telecine even don't existed yet

  • mate dont take me so literally its was a just a silly what if idea.

  • At first, its seems this is unbelievably painstaking. But when you think about how much time it takes a super computer to render a frame of today's animated movies (upwards of a day), this lightning fast.

  • unbelieable, its so easy to create parallax now and days with 2d. so awesome though,

  • BRUTAL!!

  • awesome!

  • thank guy, really cool

  • I was moving it the wrong way...DICK!

  • hahahahaha

  • Man that is soo cool!!!

  • Not only does the moon not move but in both the zoom and the panoramic the closer planes move more then the further ones.

  • I remember seeing this as a kid!

Even though I never understood what he said at the time. :)

  • so this how they did it it was replaced with CAPS

  • oh my god, i love this.

  • "I was moving it the wrong way DICK! Im taking it back now, how's that?"

  • LOL

  • i like the multiplane camera!! :)

  • you gotta admit, this is pretty dam cool. I originally saw this is a betty boop cartoon

  • 1:50 You can spot a goof in the cel frames if you have a quick eye

  • wonderful invention

  • hah the voices were so put on

  • Uma ótima explicação desse gênio que foi Walt Disney, sobre a Camera Multiplana. Congratulations!!!

  • if you are interested...check out my film 'myth labs'. its a 2008 multiplane animation, of a three plane stand i built and filmed with collage and paintings.- martha colburn

  • Did anyone else notice the misplaced frame in the 1:50 region?

  • yah

  • when was this made?

  • It must have been in the 1940's

Bambi didn't come out till 1942 and the multi-plane camera wasn't developed until 1934 by Urb Irwek, so if he mentions bambi, then this might have been made some time after that.

  • The Mickey Mouse feature was the "redesigned" Mickey first featured in 1940's Fantasia.

  • Very helpful for my "2D Animation for Independent Production" class.

Professor Lucilla Hoshor, SCAD, Animation Dept.

  • Great video! I have a dream of being a hand drawing animator, but I have no idea of that! Thanks for post it!

    from Alexander Jordan, Sweden.

  • Wow ! I was wondering what was the ability of the multiplane camera and now I can clearly see it ! Thanks for the post, it'll help me for my next film ! (Now I need to find a way to construct this thing, err..)

  • Great video for animators and scholars in film and arts.

    Thanks for post it!!!

Happy New Year from Mexico City!
