I think the most notable aspect of this mini-documentary is the amount of work that went into it. We've got tons of animation created specifically for the purpose of explaining its concepts, excellent narration by Walt Disney himself, and a stylish soundtrack that accompanies all of it.
Now THAT'S how you make a behind-the-scenes documentary.
This was a very slow, complex and high-costing method. The workers would work around the clock moving the heavy glasses until the scene was done - and approved by Walt. Any studio would go bankrupt today, if using multiplane camera. Luckily ToonBoom and alike have such feature, but it's still rarely used.
I remember watching one Family Guy episode commentary, in which they take notice how they're using multiplane camera in one particular scene. Usually many of the shows today use CGI for depth-requiring scenes.
well apart from mickey mouse/donald duck etc. the other stories like bambi, cinderella, beauty and the beast, snow white were all "remakes" of other fairy tales and fables...
1:25-2:29 would have been a great opening sequence for a "Duck Amuck"-esque Mickey Mouse cartoon. Disney should start think about doing that after they decide to end "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse".
Analog animation sure took a lot to get some nice scenes on film. lol They had to invent a multimillion dollar camera just to get 30 seconds of animation. lol
People are too caught up in the past. "If you focus on what's behind you, you won't be able to see what lies ahead." - Ratatouille, a 2007 Disney Pixar movie.
You won't get the past back, so stop sitting there with your damn tail between your legs and go check out what's available around you.
Actually, I have DVDs in my collection spanning every decade going back to the 1920s. The only "creativity" occurring now is technical--but the artistry is completely missing and empty. I haven't been to a new movie in 5 years. It's too painful.
@chattingcat This could only be said by a person, who doesn't follow the contemporary cinema at all. I can talk for hours about such great creative minds, who are working today and I've always found it silly how most people always talk how great the past is only to forget that the today isn't that bad at all. Do we always need half a century or more to acknowledge a real spark of genius? I can safely say many of my most beloved movies, live action and animation, have come out only recently.
@HalfLifeHalfDead Lol... The sad part is it doesn't take much to please some people. Some of us prefer originality and quality. I stand by my comment.
@chattingcat The sad part is how you replied to me. Not only are you ill informed, but you PREFER to stay that way. I could go on for hours naming innovative recent movies like Memento, Magnolia, Waltz with Bashir, Pan's Labyrinth, Persepolis, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Amelie, Amores Perros to name a few, but you will just neglect that, won't you? Your choice. Dwell in the past, neglect the reality, I'll just go watch Synecdoche, New York, cause all Kaufman's movies are unoriginal remakes
Max Fleischer was the first to really accomplish this. Although it is amazing, Disney was notorious for taking ideas and making them better with more family related ideas.
this is so neat. it makes me really appreciate all the time and effort that used to go into cartoons. it seems like theses days anyone can make a cartoon within a matter of minutes. in the old days can you imagine how long it took to shoot all the shots individually. wow. thanks technology. lol
Man! imagine going back in time with a macbookpro and a copy of After effects...would be rich RICH I TELL YOU! lol and this video would say "the opening scene in bambi was done by a freelancer that works from home and has a secret technique that no1 noes but dont it look great?" HA HA HA
At first, its seems this is unbelievably painstaking. But when you think about how much time it takes a super computer to render a frame of today's animated movies (upwards of a day), this lightning fast.
if you are interested...check out my film 'myth labs'. its a 2008 multiplane animation, of a three plane stand i built and filmed with collage and paintings.- martha colburn

And now, any little kid can, and does, create this all the time with flash animation.
In 30 or 40 years, we'll probably be able to render Avatar graphics on a small web app online.
