Yes i'm using speedfan rpm's are good and my temperatures are low. Games are running flawlessly. When it was hot GTA EFLC was frame by frame. Very bad. Now its great. I have Asus N61vn bought it used and got the fan "surprise" and now its all good.
Hello, a big thanks from lithuania. I used some kind of industrial thick oil that my dad use on trucks, When i saw the video i knew that i should do that. now it goes as good as ever. by the way because my laptop is mostly standing in one place i removed the back plate covering main items and so my laptop has amazing cooling
@XBC125 Yeah, pretty much any good grease should do the trick. You might want to use speedfan to compare your CPU temp with and without the cover, though. The cases are generally designed to get high-efficiency airflow right across the stuff that needs it. If it's not caked with dust, cooling should *theoretically* be better with the cover on.
wow...you are a lifesaver. My laptop fan has been noisy every now and then for quite a while but the last couple of days it became unbearable, because it just wouldn't stop buzzing.
After cleaning it up and using some sewing machine oil, you can hardly the fan!!!
@Leonstroet It started making noise again after about 6 months. I simply re-oiled it. I might hunt for a new lubricant, especially since one of the fans in my desktop has started making noise as well.
@SamtasticOnline awesome thanks i have started to service my own pc's. I think that 6 months is a descent time, but if you find a good one let us know please, and good work, keep up the how to videos!
@SamtasticOnline Oi will make sure i do i spend ages looking for good videos lie these, your are the only person that i have found that does them and is just making it up as they go sort of thing, i know so many people that just "think" they know what they are doing. :)
Hey Sam! Great video! My laptop (HP HDX18) fan started acting up BAD a few months back. I took it apart (very lengthly process, comes apart in like 8 pieces to get to the fan) a few months back, but there didn't seem to be access to the fan without taking it off the heat sink. I found this video just recently and decided to do it again. It worked like a charm! The fan came apart the same ways your did. I used sewing machine oil and arctic silver 5. Thanks a ton!
My laptop fan has become very loud and buzzing even vibrates a little. Could it possibly be the same problem? Nice video by the way, Please reply if you have the time.
@Ner0381 Thanks, and quite likely. A sort of unorthodox way to check is to interrupt the spin of the fan to see if it stops the noise (just for a split second). An important thing to note is whether or not you have a ball-bearing fan, because if you do, it's a whole different kind of animal to fix.
@SamtasticOnline Well, it's being serviced for couple of days now, since it's still under warranty and all. Hope they fix it soon... Thanks for the reply.
Kudos, Sam! And when did you swipe my computer?? Your vid gave me the courage to tear into mine. It was so plugged up with dusty gunky stuff (used near kitchen). it's a wonder it worked at all... I am awaiting delivery of my silver thermal paste, but have all the confidence in the world that it will be back in business - but now as a back up since I have taken delivery of my Alienware M14X... ;0))
I have an m-6339u, and it appears to have a similar fan (if not the same one) as I've had the same issue with finding the fan for sale online. Anyway, my question is, how do you remove the fan and heat sync initially? It seems to be well put on, as I've not removed it in the past, but it's hard for me to clean it without doing so. Perhaps you could make a video just showing the removal process or type it out to explain it to me? I'd appreciate it. Thanks for the video though! :)
@Mathamattix Sure, I can do that. I'll try to get it up for you tomorrow if I can. I'll look up your computer model, too, so I can try to give you specific tips.
@SamtasticOnline Thank you very much. I look forward to seeing it or any tips you might have! The buzzing and overheating has just become too much of an annoyance at this point, to where I can't even take my laptop to class and take notes like everyone else because it's just so noisy (even with my cooling pad on under it). I'd sure like to not have to take my notes by hand this semester haha!
@Mathamattix Hey, I'm so sorry for how long it took. I didn't forget about you! I just recorded the video, and I need to trim it and encode it, then I'll upload it. I'm going to set it up as a video response to this one so it will be easy for you to find it. I hope it's not too little too late!
Thanks Sam for the guide. It worked for my M-6866, so kudos to ya! So far I haven't had any trouble with it acting up any more. My fan started making a loud humming/hissing sound that made me cringe for almost a month. I've been looking for help, and I finally found your video. Thanks a bundle!
WD40 doesn't lubricate, its mostly used to clean that grease/dust/etc goo. You should try lubricants that work well with metallic parts and doesn't harm the plastic ones ;)
I read in a few places that transmission oil works nicely (lasts longer i suppose).
Will try it in the next few days on my tx2500 fans along with the typical copper n paste mods.
The annoying thing is that i will have to dismantle the half laptop to give it a thorough cleaning (thanks hp for putting the cooling under the keyboard...).
Thanks Sam for the video! After wondering if my laptop fan was louder than normal because of a heating issue, I made a trip out to a local repair shop where they cleaned the fan and applied new paste to my laptop for 20 bones :). It's now super quiet and a nice change! Keep it up!

sorry have to ask you made this video a while ago, does it still sound quite or has the graphite oil faded away, if so how long did it last?

@kimosabesun I know how that is with the HP's. That's one of the things I look at when shopping for laptops: how accessible is the heatsink?
I hadn't thought of using transmission fluid. Let me know how it works (and how easy it is to apply).
