I really like this song, I almost like the EP more than the album. I like this one because it's dirge-slow and bludgeoningly heavy, and unlike a lot of contemporary progressive metal bands, they take the time to put some emotion and dynamics into it.
Whoever "guessed" that the cover song was Yellow Raven in the VERY first comment had to be someone close to the band in some form... theres just no fucking way the first person to comment just got lucky
OK, but I'm thinking, nonetheless, because they have done other songs, theres a high possibility that it was someone close to the band or from the record company. Who cares anyway, theres no point in getting an EP that contains almost no original material that is not going to be on the LP
They've covered a handful of songs. Yellow Raven and Hallelujah by Scorpions and Jeff Buckley, respectively, have been the most common by far, and incidentally they were both the first two to be guessed in the contest by different people. Seriously, not a difficult conclusion to reach.
But I'll agree that the new EP is really more for strict fanboys than anyone else.
This is a very good tune in my opinion. When band's usually premier new songs live it tends to be the songs that are destined for "single" release, so that could explain the "simpleness" of this song. I love the sound of it though. Hit's you like a brick...
Pain Of Salvation is my favorite band.I also love Nile,Meshuggah,Opeth,Akercocke and many more "progressive"bands but P.O.S is the one and only band that carved me so deeply. They are gradually a part of me!!!I would like them to turn more aggressive but honestly dear youtubers I don't care if they won't!!Because they are a unique band that express their feelings through progressive vibes of unknown origin! As long as they are pure I know they will amaze me,,,:D:D:D:
I think PoS must to come back to their "grungy" prog sound of their first two albums, and leave a little rap metal for stock mojo and faith no more. A music feeling based on Winning a war, People passing by, Inside , Used , the entire Remedy Lane... I think in those songs live the PoS essence.. uhhh apologies cause my stinky english
True artists are not concerned with re-creation... they're more interested in moving forward and perfecting their craft. It's more rewarding to move right alongside with them and take part in their musical journey. Indeed, that's what makes this band so great. You can't have any expectations or else you cease to get the point of the music anyways. Like didsa said, he/they only see good and bad, not "prog" or "not prog".
That's a good philosophy to have in life with anything ;)
More than Proghead88 said, in my opinion, music serves as instrument for delivering a message. And everything I heard from pain of salvation, as a band or reading about them, more than making music for selling they always intend to send a message. Thats one of the reasons why I like Scarsick, (which Im guessing you dont) cause the critics made by it could only be delivered the way they are. I cant make more clearer than that, simply listen and pay attenttion to Spitfall or kingdom of loss.
One thing that I always struggled with was the fact that people still try to compare Albums. All of them serve different purposes. Stop arguing about which album or which band is best and simply say which one do you like the most and why you liked it, and fucking respect other people's opinions. Those are pointless discussions that in my opinion will contribute to nothing, just wasted effort that could've been employed in a more constructive way. :S
Hey, I've some news: I'd just heard and reading lots of continous times Scarsick and now it likes me so much! Not so amazing cause this happened to me when I start to listen PoS and I hated Remedy Lane -now one of my favorites albums- Now I found THAT feelin'.
I'll not lie to ya, but I had the same feeling. The first time was way different from what they usually do, but once you get past the pre-concept, and sometimes even prejudice(I did), you come to realize that in fact it is a great album, with something relevant to say. It is full of feeling im my opinion. Enter Rain, so great.. Kingdom of loss, flame to the moth. PoS is my favorite band, man. I simply cannot dislike their music. aushdasuhdaushd ;D
as an Art student -just few months to get my graduation he he- I know contents and form must to be the same thing -IS the same thing-, maybe this is the reason due my little dislike with POS new songs. I like so much Disco Queen for example, with lots of irony and sarcasm, as usual in POS lyrics, but in their music we can found this too. With new song I've found sometimes divorce between music and lyrics... maybe I`m mistake but this is my feeling
And to all of you who say it is simple, not prog, whatever..
Think before you talk! You say BE is the best album, but that has a song like Diffidentia, which is also a very simple, song. It has two chords (in the main riffs)..
So quit complaining, wait until you get the song in it's own context.
You should also know by now that Daniel doesn't care about genres. He only sees god/bad, as opposed to prog/not prog. Good thing really!
Scarsick had a lack of those "shivering" moments I've experienced with PoS, but the concept and lyrics are so striking, I would buy the book if there was one. :P
What is with this 4/4, 4 chord nonsense?? I thought this was Pain of Salvation, complete with complex song structures, creative chord changes, odd meters, polyrhythms, interesting riffs, emotional guitar solos, dramatic shifts in mood and dynamics, etc. Where did it all go?? Scarsick took one step away from that and was an ok change of pace for me, once I swallowed my initial disbelief. But if it continues in this direction... god help us all, because there will be no hope for prog.
the point of music is to enjoy it for its beauty for the emotions it brings out and as a release and escape. now if daniel decides to implement odd meters, polyrythms ect as to express what the song is ment to deal with then he will. I think some of what you described should not always be used or it loses it's purpose and just becomes an exercise in self indulgence.
I guess when I hear the better quality version of this song it could grow on me. I really do wish PoS would get out of this "boring, monotonous" phase.
Granted, this isn't the only song on the album, so we'll see how it goes.
AH now I know what this song reminds me of. Type O Negative. It totally sounds like something Type O Negative would write, except for the singing. But just listen to the chorus... it sounds a lot like a type o negative chorus.
and as long as he is being creative i have no problem in whaterver he does...
he tries new things.... that's a part of prog music... experiment with every kind of music...so he is no less pf an artist that he used to be... if u don't like it no problem just take a hike and not booing the song..
I have to admit, I didn't like it the first couple of times I listened to it, but I really grew to love it. Especially Cribcaged and Spitfall. It's one of my favourite albums now!
They sure as hell never do the same thing twice. They evolved from the funky prog metal band to the prog rock band of the perfect element and then to that atmospheric crossover stuff from scarsick and now it seems they're going to evolve to a grunge prog whatever kinda thing with a nice synth.
.. *sighs* .. They never strive to do the same thing twice, which is why I love this band. However.. Daniel mentioned on the website:
"no one is allowed to say anything about Mortar Grind unless they were there in Denmark, it was a rough little secret treat that someone was insensitive enough to spread."
Fortunately, I was there in Denmark - and I can say it sounded a lot better live ;)
I would also like if this is the Ashes of new album...BUT,the style they are aiming at for the upcoming album is not even close to PTE,RL,OHBTCL etc. Daniel said 1976 on stereoids...mentioned bands like led zeppelin, foo fighters, doors, faith no more,buckley... we'll wait and see...
It's true, this is very Scarsick. And PoS is known to dare to change a little every album, but I'm not seeing it that much! Sorry guys, I think you need to work on it a little more.

If i meet Daniel somewhere, i will kick his ass until he learns to write songs again. 3 chords and verse-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus? By the man who wrote Handful of Nothing, Idioglossia, People passing by and Nightmist? Are you kidding me?
At least i know this might not be the final version of the song, which gives me some hope because i find it so bad it can't possibly get any worse.
Or maybe is the "Ashes" of the new album. Rebember: PoS music is more album-orientated, than song-orientated. Anyway, I do like what this song has to offer.

Yup, the quality is great for a live concert, but of course is miles away from a studio version (a that's pretty obvious)
Anyway, I do like the song, a keep repeating myself the chorus. And the atmotsphere overall is good.
Also, I think this is not the final version, probably, in the studio, this is turning out diferent.
